Hi, I have been having problems with freezing up lately. I have to burn my movies a few times b4 they come out ok. Is there any updates or ways to prevent this from happening?
There are 4 things that will typically cause this:
1)poor quality media
2)burning too fast
3)burning too close to the disk's outer edge
4)A possible incompatibility issue between the media you're using and the DVD player
so, try...
1)Try using media considered to be good quality stuff, I personally use Sony's DVD+Rs (make sure it states on the package, made in Japan), you could also try verbatim or Toyo Yuden.
2) Slow down the write/burn speed to 4x (this is what's considered to be the sweet spot).
3)Have DVD Shrink create smaller file sizes of 4300MB so as not to burn too close to the disk's outer edge. Run shrink and goto:edit-->preferences, in the preferences tab choose custom from the dropdown menu and enter a value of 4300.
4)Make sure your stand alone player can play the media you're using, so read the manual to see what is recommended and what is not allowed.
If having alot of playback issues, you could buy an upto date player that will play every format available (they're cheap today) or you could booktype DVD+R media as DVD-ROMs to increase compatibility if the burner supports it.
Hi, Thanks. I just played the dvd on my computer and it seems to be fine. So I'm guessing its the dvd player. I haven't had problems in the past but I'll buy a new one that can play dvd + and -r's. :)

Please, don't just assume it's the DVD player's fault without first trying suggestions 1, 2 and 3 I've given above and re-trying the copy in the player. If making the suggested changes doesn't correct the issue, then buy a new player.
Hi, thanks. Ya, I just checked and the dvd player is compatable with dvd +r and -r. So I will keep my dvd player and try your suggestions. My shrink is set on max speed so I will lower that.
I noticed your burn settings pic has the booktype to dvd-rom grayed out.
What's the brand name and model# of your DVD-RW drive?
Just curious.
tombo713:
Your DVD-RW drive should play its own backups and look near original in quality. After that, comes that stand alone player factor. Before slapping out over $25 and higher for a new player, try johnl123 4 causes:
1) Try higher quality media
2) Your set at max speed. Lower it
3) Reduce that backup target. Crap media-4300 mbs. Quality media-4360 mbs
Your burner verifies those backups are ok with a near perfect playback. Your stand alone says nada with the freezing. There's something wrong with your backups and that player is telling you with the freezing. Also pixellation and skipping are other issues as well. You need to rule out those first 3 possible causes.
Then I'll add #5 to johnl123's list:
5)Last resort, but you may try a lens cleaning disc in that player. They can be harsh on a player, that's why it's a last resort before drive replacement.
I'd like to know:
Brand name/speed rate/and format of your blank media?
Brand name and model# of your DVD-RW drive?
All programs you use for your backup process?
johnl123's list is just the tip of the iceberg. You have other factors as well:
6) Burn program
7) DVD-RW drive quality-
8) Sticker labels
9) Multi-tasking
and the list goes on.
Stand alone players can pick out any of these factors. They can do some very weird stuff when it comes to reading dvd+/-r backups. At least your burner verifies it with a good playback-so it should be a good backup.

The pic I used is just an example and is not a representation of what I have. I have two plextor burners a PX-712A and a PX-716A, both are able to booktype and capable of so much more. They are, in my opinion the best out there and have not let me down (so far).
I was curious to know why they were grayed out. I've got 4 benqs, and those options aren't grayed out. DVD Shrink will booktype with my benq 1620s,but not my 1640. It still had the box all lit up,but didn't do anything.
