LOL.........Memosux, that's the appropriate name for it. Garbage or pathetic landfill media would also best describe Memorex.

DigitalFAQ is almost worthless as a site for recommended media. It is out of date and full of discrepancies.

Funny, I thought we both agreed that Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden make excellent discs.

Even though Digitalfaq is outdated, at least we all agree that Memorex sucks!!!!

@Joe, funny guy. now i could have posted that i was surprised you weren't singing the praises of CMC or how most ppl's burner's firmware aren't optimised for CMC discs, but i didn't. instead i agreed with you on the digitalfaq thing.

TY and Verbs are indeed excellent discs, (but as i've said quite a few times before), ppl like myself don't forcefeed them to ppl, we simply say that they are top quality and do not dis-service ppl by recommending them all the time. However when it comes to CMC, they are defended to the death sometimes, almost passionately. big difference to the way we heartily recommend media that just works for most ppl.

I have not seen any comments claiming CMC is equal to the best. Most comments are typically the brilliant analysis of the post just before yours. Not everyone agrees Memorex "sucks"; in fact, there are some people in this very forum who have had good results with Memorex, CMC, Ritek, Prodisc, Philips, HP, and Imation. Few of those people are left at AfterDawn because any comments they make are routinely trashed, and they leave for friendlier forums.

One does not need to enhance the reputation of Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden by denigrating all the others. There is a reason that people have success with certain discs where others have problems. If it were an issue of quality, everyone would have problems. If it were an issue of consistency, then everyone would have problems sometimes but not always. The fact is that Memorex, for example, has had the largest market share of DVD retail sales for the last four years in the United States. If there were serious quality issues, then that share would be in decline. I'm curious why there are so many insistent attacks on certain brands and screams about quality and "so-and-so sucks" with few, if any, references to quality criteria. (Part of the reason is that most test parameters are beyond consumers to determine. Scans are an inaccurate but useful display of how well a drive reads a recording, but there are so many variables that one cannot easily determine where a problem lies.) I have pointed out cases in which someone with a certain model drive attacks CMC or Prodisc, for example, when I know that the drive they mention is incompatible with either disc. Some people distort that to mean I am a "CMC lover" or that I claim they make the best disc. I would like to be able to help people as much as the next guy. Recommending TY or Verbatim is a good and easy way to help. Castigating all other brands is not. There must be more to the puzzle--and there should be modicum of civility or logic applied to responses. (That's actually improving among several of the most knowledgeable members and moderators of this forum. Perhaps that's why there are a few more different opinions being offered on this site--it has become more welcoming to people with different experiences.)

i personally welcome EVERYONE's experiences with whichever media they choose to use, we all have our "preferences" and with a large forum such as the one here on AfterDawn, you have to expect that these "blanket statements" will be made (whether it's a particular brand bashing or not); yes, there are people here that have ZERO experience with said media but just bash for the sake of feeling like they "belong" or "fit in with the general consensus"...we all have differing reasons as to WHY we come on AfterDawn~ :)

things are slowly changing here, you can thank the mods for that...i appreciate this "friendlier" environment to all those who come seeking to learn more about media and such, what really gets under MY skin is what some people say about x,y,z media when they have NO EXPERIENCE with it at all; i'm sure u've used just as many diff. manufactured discs as i have (if not MUCH MORE) joeryan, so i hope you can see my point of view in this and can relate to my sentiments regarding media...i speak from EXPERIENCE with media i recommend or put down ON MY PARTICULAR SETUPS/DRIVES, everyone will have different setups, so results will inevitably vary; i simply comment on what "worked well for me" and what continually gives me success~ :)

Doc,

Yes, you are one of the "most knowledgeable" to whom I was referring. Thanks for confirming that there are bashers who jump on the bandwagon who try to conform by chanting the same insults over and over.

As for my claims about firmware limitations being a problem, there is an excellent case now with Samsung camcorders. They introduced six new models at the Consumer Electronics Show that can record 8cm DVD+R DL discs. Two of those models have reached the U.S. market, but the only discs "available" are Verbatim discs--very hard to find since Verbatim has less than 3% of the camcorder disc market. Although Samsung has issued one firmware update (rare among DVD camcorders), it only improves drive compatibility. No other DVD+R DL discs will work with these camcorders or even be introduced to the market to support them until Samsung engineers test other discs and write new firmware for them. This is an example of the politics behind firmware/drive combinations that hurts consumers, and in this case, even the companies involved. In my position I get to see some of these shenanigans in the background that most people do not see, and that is one reason why non-Japanese disc manufacturers get a bad reputation.

My take on media I have no problem burning to all brands of dvd.
Memorex, CMC, Ritek, Philips, HP, and Imation TY and Verbs
The key to me is the burner ye are using to get a good burn the lazor lens must be kept clean..I clean my main burner lens about every 3 months. also people for get the lens on ye player also needs to be cleaned.
What I mean I take my burner apart to hand clean the lens. Using vcr head cleaner and a vcr sheepskin q-tip style stick?
The movies I burned with DVDxcopy in 2000 are still going strong using Memorex, I have about 25 Memorex made cartoon movies for over 3 years storied all year long in my ford Explorer that my grand-children play when we go on trips..the temp can be as high as 140f and a low of below 0

My 10 cents.

@ireland

glad to hear your Memorex DVDs are still good, so are mine but they are only 3yrs old. BUT they code out as RicohJapan, and not CMC mags. I've used Imation also. XcopyXpress loved both those "bad" media. Of course I knew no better at the time. I have changed my ways since then. Media and programs. But XcopyXpress still works with AnyDVD.

@garmoon

i still use xpress-rf and platinum-rf and they have no ripper and anydvd is needed and the programs work great even on to days movies (sony}..rf means ripper free....also there is no 321 nag screen

Early on I downloaded a little program called "321 Gone" and it ripped out the watermark and 321 warning and FBI warning. You just click on it when Xpress was finished ripping and before putting in the blank. It also enabled the copy to be copied.

Verbatims are just fine that you find MIT, the only thing wrong with your statement is that i have YET to see a Verbatim DVD+R DL that is "made in taiwan"...all of them (well at least the ones i have used) are 100% "made in singapore" :)

other branded DL media you might find a MIT (as in the Ritek/Ricohjpn produced ones) under an assortment of "Brand names"...but, at least to my knowledge/experience thus far, ALL my DVD+R DL Verbatims are "made in singapore"...

but, no worries as to the SL Verbatims...all of mine in the single layer are made in taiwan~
