Hello All,

I am a newbie in regards to DVD Backups. I download dvd shrink and dvd decrypter. I went through all of the steps of dvd shrink and it did its thing successfully. When dvd shrink was finished it automatically opened up dvd decrypter. The source was correct and I inserted a blank dvd-r into my drive. I made sure ISO was chosen and verify was unchecked. I clicked on the hard drive icon in order to start the process. This is the error that I receive:

I/O Error!

Device: {1:0:0] SONY DVD+-RW DW-Q58A UDS1 (D:) ATA

ScsiStatus: 0x02
Interpretation: Check Condition

CDB: 2A 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 20 00
Interpretation: Write(10) - Sectors: 0-31

Sense Area: 70 00 05 00 00 00 00 0A 00 00 00 00 26 00 00 00 00 00
Interpretation Invalid Field in Parameter List

Help, I am really trying to back up this DVD and have no clue what this error means. I don't believe this is the media that I am using because this is the second disc I have tried from the same package and I get the same error. I am using Philips DVD-R; 4.7 GB; 1-8X

**Also, since DVD Decrypter will no longer be receiving updates, can anyone recommend another FREE decrypter that is just as good. Also, if you can recommend one, will you let me know if it works with DVD Shrink or not. Also, if it does can I use the filed that DVD Shrink has already put on my hard drive or will I have to shrink the programs all over again in order to use another decrypter?

Thanks!!!!

Hello, atlcharm.

First your burner's firmware seems out of date. The most recent version is UYS2. Download the newer firmware (just click on the firmware version) from the link below and install:

http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=2113

Second, Philips media is not very good for the most part. Good quality media is Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, and Made in Japan labeled Fuji and Sony disks.

DVD Decrypter is still a fine program for burning. There is an updated version for burning only named ImgBurn located here:

http://www.imgburn.com/

DVD Shrink can rip disks that have only CSS protection. Disks that have structural and other copy protection schemes are more difficult and require the use of various other programs:

DVD Decrypter with PSL file
DVDFab Decrypter (free) http://www.dvdidle.com/free.htm
AnyDVD (commercial) http://www.slysoft.com
VOB Blanker (free) http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_tools/voblan...

Many prefer AnyDVD because it makes life easier. I believe there is currently a $5 discount to Afterdawn users for each Slysoft product. There is a free trial period available for the software as well. It is updated regularly (4 times last week alone). Updates are free for life.

There are some basic guide links in my signature below.

UYS3 is available here.

http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=2113

It may be the case that Dell has renamed the burner so that the Lite-On/Sony firmware won't update.

Does the firmware attempt to update or is the burner never recognized?

I'm having the same problem. It doesn't even recognize the burner.

Others have apparently been able to update that Dell/Sony/Lite-on Q58A drive so I'm not sure what the problem is.
