What brand and speed of media are you using?
At what speed are you burning?
What is model and firmware version of your burner?

Are you burning the AVIs directly to the DVD or are you using NeroVision or another program to make them DVD compliant before burning?

Try outputing an iso image file from Nero and then burning that with ImgBurn.
http://www.imgburn.com
Also use good quality media like Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, and Made in Japan labeled Fuji and Sony. Also don't burn faster than 1/2 the rated speed of the media. It could be the case that your media isn't providing a quality burn for the player to utilize.
I don't have a DVD player that'll recognize and play AVIs so I have to convert to DVD compliant files.
Are the burned disks replayable on your computer?

If your player plays AVIs and the burned disks plays back on your computer drive, then I suspect the DVD players doesn't like the media. I'd try another brand or type and see if that works. It never hurts to have some RW (rewriteable media) about for testing purposes.
