That system can do it but it won't be a quick process. You really need at least 15MB free on the hard drive for backing up a DVD. It can be done in less depending on what you're backing up and how you do it. Breaking the copy protection and re-encoding are processor intensive so a faster processor means less time. Burning a disk depends on the speed of the media used and the size of the file. A DVD5, 4.5GB, at 4X takes 14 minutes to burn, at 6X-8X, around 8-10 minutes. Ripping and re-encoding could take 8-40 minutes depending on what's involved. The biggest limitation based on your system specs is the hard drive space. You really need to add another hard drive to the system. I'd probably upgrade to a newer system if I had the money and the desire to do so.

There are a few programs out there that you could use to backup your DVD's. You defently have a good enough system to do a backup of your DVD. As to time it will take. Shouldnt take you more then an hour to do a backup of your DVD with the system you have. Programs you can use to do this.

AnyDVD + CloneDVD2 wich you can get a 21 day trial of them at www.slysoft.com I would recomend getting AnyDVD no matter if you use CloneDVD2 or not. AnyDVD is updated frequently and can decrypet any kind of copy protection out there. Plus wirth the frequantly updated versions thwy keep up with new copy protection that comes out.

As to other programs you can use.

DVD Shrink (transcoder to compress DVD9 disc to DVD5) This program still works but is best if you use it with AnyDVD due to DVD Shrink not being able to be updtaed anymore and is obsolite on the ripping part of the program.

Nero Recode2 (Transcoder to compress DVD9 disc to DVD5) You also will need a program like AnyDVD to use with this program due to Recode2 not letting you rip any type of copy protection disc.

So as you see you have a few diffrent options. But deffently your computer specs will backup your DVD's.

It shouldn't damage your DVD reader.

You might want to limit the read (ripping) speed just to be safe. LOL.
