Hey Guys,
I have finally gotten a DVD+-RW Writer Drive with Lightscribe. Anyways, what I have done is ripped a DVD to my computer and it is stored in a file that is 4.3GB in size. I am just wondering, what is an easy FREE program that I can use to put these files on a DVD that will play in my DVD Player. I just really want to figure out what to do. I cant copy a disc to another beacause i dont have two drives, that is why I ripped it. So the bottom line is, I have the files from the disc saved on my hard drive (4.3GB) I just want to know of an easy FREE program that i can just take these files and drag and drop them onto a new DVD Disc. Thanks guys anything will help. When you reply please talk in laymans terms because I dont understand alot of computer lingo....lol. By the way all of these are VOB files.

ImgBurn or DVD Decrypter.

Links for downloads of the programs are in my signature below as well as links to basic guides for backing up DVDs. When the size of a disk exceeds 4.3GB or so you'll also need DVD Shrink or Nero Recode (part of the Nero suite of programs) to recompress the file to fit on a DVD5 (single layer).

Also use good quality media like Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, and Made in Japan labeled Sony and Fuji disks. Limit your burn speed to no more than 1/2 the rated speed of the media.

What happened to the IFO and BUP files? Also, are these still in the Video_TS folder? What did you use to "rip" these files and were you editing once you got the files to the hard drive? As a test for compliance use the free app DVD Shrink (it's a free transcoder with a bunch of handy features). If Shrink will open and analyze the files, they're usually DVD compliant (simply recordable and playable in the DVD format). If free is your desire, you'll need Shrink or the free Rebuilder for DVD files larger than 4.3GB if you're going to be recording to the DVD5 media (4.7). They shrink those large DVD files down to size.

By the way, I have multiple optical drives and still prefer using files from the hard drive for encoding. You're really not missing much by having just the one drive.

The IFO and BUP files are there. When I tried to burn them on one program it did not know what these files were. I just need an easy drag and drop program that will organize all of my files on the disc so I can watch it in my home DVD Player

Yeah I ripped them using DVD Decrypter and shrunk them using DVD Shrink so now all I need is a program to burn them to a disc with.

If you outputed a folder of video files, then unless you have Nero or some other authoring program, you'll have to convert the folder of files to an ISO. The two most commonly used free burning programs DVD Decrypter and Imgburn, only take ISO files as input. There is a program called Folder to ISO that will do this.

DVD Shrink can create an ISO file instead of a folder of files as well. In addition it can go ahead and do the burn with either Nero (if you have that) or DVD Decrypter or ImgBurn.

Folder to ISO:

Links to the other software are in my signature below as well as links to the guides. I strongly suggest you look at the guides.

Thanks!
I read on one of your guides, this is what he said

To make a PERFECT backup with DVD Decrypter we'll do it in the ISO image mode. First go to "Mode" then "ISO," then select "Read." Where it says "Source," select the drive containing your original DVD. Hopefully, this drive is your DVD-ROM drive. Using your burner to read a disc is hard on the drive. The constant starting and stopping of the drive can cause over-heating and can prematurely wear your burner out. If you have just the one drive, there's not much you can do but use it. Where it says "Destination," Browse until you find your pre-made folder (C:\All DVD Work\The last Samurai Kills Bill gets Eaten Alive) and select that. Now "Click" the Disc-to-HD icon.

Me, I'm headed out to get a cup of coffee and a cigarette but I should be back 'bout the time the ripping is done, . . . .

When the "Reading sound" signals that the job is complete, remove your original DVD and insert your *blank DVD.
Alright, I'm back, and you didn't think I'd make it . . .
Now back you go to "Mode," then "ISO" and then choose "Write". Now we go to "Source" and locate our folder where our ISO and mds file resides. Choose mds. Then, let's head to "Destination" and select our burning drive where our blank DVD disc awaits. Lastly, we "Click" the HD to disc icon

Do you think I should give this a try or should I use that Folder to ISO and then burn it.

You can do either. Usually commercial DVDs are double layered and contain around 8GB of data. This will not all fit on a single layer disk, so people use DVD Shrink to either compress the entire disk to a size that will fit or to reauthor the DVD stripping only the main title they are interested in. DVD Shrink can then output either a folder of video files or an iso image file. Shrink can also link directly to Nero, DVD Decrypter, or ImgBurn and control the burning of the DVD. Some opt for Shrink to control the burn. Some purists like to just output an iso file from Shrink and then execute the burning program themselves to do the burn.

Doing a copy of a single layer disk is simple with DVD Decrypter.

Set the mode to ISO Read.
Determine the location on the hard drive for the image file to be stored.
Click the icon to start the ripping.

After the rip is finished, it's time to burn:
Set the mode to ISO Write.
In the Source menu select the location of the ripped ISO file.
Insert a blank disk.
Click the icon to start the burn.

If I use DVD Decrypter to rip an ISO Image can IU use DVD Shrink to shrink the file down so that I can burn it on a disc. My discs hold 4.7GB of data.

Yes, DVD Shrink will accept DVDs, iso files, and video files as inputs.

ok so here is what we do

1. Insert the disc and rip a ISO omage to the HD.

2. Shrink the image using DVD Shrink

3. Use DVD Decryptor to burn the shrunken image to the disc?
(Would you please supply steps to burn with DVD Decryptor)

Do I have this right? Thanks for all of your help!

That would work, but the easiest method is to choose the option to create the ISO and burn with DVD Decrypter. That way Shrink sets up the burn for you and you don't have to mess with the Decrypter program at all. Also, the rip can be either Files or ISO. As was pointed out, Shrink uses DVDs (with a driver decrypter), ISO images, and Files as a source. Just remember that DVD Decrypter gets left in ISO write mode and will need to be switched back for any ripper duties.

Set the mode in DVD Decrypter to ISO Write.
In the Source menu select the location of the ISO file created by DVD Shrink.
Insert blank disk.
Click the icon to burn.

There should also be an output option in DVD Shrink after you click the Backup icon to "Create an ISO Image and Burn with DVD Decrypter in the Select Target Backup menu. DVD Shrink will control the burn by Decrypter for you if you choose this option. Otherwise just follow the directions above.

The following guide demos everything with pictures except it rips in file mode rather than iso mode. That's just a matter of preference. It's also possible to just DVD Shrink to rip directly from the DVD in most cases if you're using AnyDVD or the DVD doesn't have any nasty copy protection schemes.

Why not just select create ISO and write with Decrypter? It does the same thing, only eliminates some steps. The fewer steps the better. Shrink puts the DVD Decrypter in write mode, so there's no need to fiddle with the DVD Decrypter at all.

Rip source to HDD (File or ISO).

Open source in Shrink and transcode.

With DVD in burner, select create ISO image and burn with DVD Decrypter.

Set back and wait for finished DVD backup.

Actually that's 4.37GB. That's why Shrink and other backup apps Shrink the files to about 4.3GB (so they'll fit a DVD5).

Brobear, I think I put that in the post just above yours. LOL. The whole thread started out with having the thing already ripped to the hard drive and it's gotten convoluted along the way. I put the DVD Shrink doing the burn in two different posts I think. :)

Well that would have been good work. You sort of had me confused with all the different things you were suggesting. First read my sig and visit BBMayo and Scubapete and then the different Shrink options. For beginners it's best to do the most direct and simple operation. The user already had the files on the HD. Those would only be usable with a burner app that will burn files, Nero and VSO being good options, unless they want to create an ISO. The free trial of Nero, using Nero Express would have been all that was needed to burn the files. We've covered ISO in detail, but the easiest route would have been to transcode the files again with Shrink and auto burn with DVD Decrypter. Here the user already knows how to use Shrink. All they need is Decrypter installed and the right option checked.

As for answering with ISO and write with DVDD, I suggested it right after djplunk08 asked for clarification.

To sum up my impressions, first the user needs to decide on a burner app. The Nero trial is available and will burn both Files and ISO. The free DVD Decrypter and ImgBurn are avialable and burn only ISO. For free with Shrink, DVD Decrypter works well. Then the short instructions I posted were all that's needed. I know I get verbose myself, but at times the short route is the best.

There's no simple drag and drop, but for simple use with Shrink use the "Create ISO and burn with Decrypter" option (under Target Device in the Backup Window). That way all you have to worry about is having DVD Decrypter installed and getting the files ripped and transcoded with Shrink, the burn takes care of itself automatically. If you're doing the full disc, remember to check the options under the Quality Settings tab. That's the short simple version and nothing to learn or go to other sites and guides for.

Excuse me if I caused any confusion. The text I put in bold in this post was all that was needed to solve your problem. Actually it's easier than a drag and drop app, you set it and you don't even need to drag and drop files. Once set, all you need to do is process your ripped files with Shrink.
