While trying to figure out how to format my memory card using the memory manager program that came with the MaxDrive usb drive I stumbled onto a curious feature. Apparently, pressing start (I think it was start) brings up a message box asking if you want to switch discs. I've tried it with a regular game disc and it does indeed boot up the game.

Does this mean I can use this instead of SwapMagic to play games from a different region? I believe one key feature of SwapMagic is that it parks the laser during this process, does anyone know whether the MaxDrive disc does this too? Or how I may be able to find out myself without damaging my PS2?

No... I'm pretty sure the PS2 checks if the game is a valid PS2 game disc, so unless you have a modded PS2, you can't get past the checking stage

Yes, but that's why the SwapMagic disc requires using a slide card to manually change the disc. However, since doing that while the disc is still spinning can damage the laser, or something along those lines, the SwapMagic disc stops it to avoid damage, I think.

Maybe the SwapMagic disc does more than that. I don't know. I'm still new at this, though I have been reading around a bit.

I have seen mention of some other trick involving the Action Replay Max. Since it's the same company, it's plausible that the code for swapping discs is the same.

I could try it blindly, but I'd rather not risk damaging my PS2. That's why I also asked if there was some way to figure it out that wouldn't damage it.
