Vacation overseas w/my 6010...what does 'unlocking' mean?

I'm planning a vacation to the UK. I use a Nokia 6010 and have a prepaid plan with T-Mobile. They say I won't be able to use it unless I use a different SIM chip or whatever. I'm not in the know on all the different hacks, etc. I don't even like that I have to have a cell phone these days. My question is how do I goof with my phone so that I can use it in the UK? Will I still be able to use my T-Mobile minutes and my current phone #? Any help/suggestions would be much appreciated.

I don't know of any network you will be able to use in the UK with your 6010. The phone you have is a US version that runs on GSM 850/1900 MHz and in the UK, they mainly have GSM 1800 MHz and no, you will not be able to keep the same phone number. If you need a phone for your trip, purchase a tri-band or quad band phone to accept the frequency for whatever sim you might use.

I still don't understand the advantages of unlocking the phone. What options does this give me?

It would allow you to use other GSM 1900 MHz sims in the US and other places in the world with the same frequency.

Another advantage:) What if you and your friend were stranded out in the woods and needed help because your car or truck was stuck in the mud. Your friends phone is showing a signal because he uses Cingular but his battery is beeping and going to die any minute. He rode with you so he didn't think to bring a car charger. Your phone has a good battery but no signal in the woods because you have T-Mobile. Now, since your phone is unlocked, you can take your friends sim out and place it in your phone and make the call for help. Does this help you any? I'm sure you could imagine different situations that an unlocked phone might be handy in.
