Hello,
I've been reading these forums for awhile now and have always found my answers without asking for help.
A couple of months ago I found out how to set nero to booktype and no problems. But My daughters portable dvd player(Hitachi) will only play my store bought originals or -R copied of my originals.
If I could remember how I changed to booktype I would change back so I could copy Disc for her. If I do change back to I guess Default?
Will I have to keep going back and forth to burm DVD+R & DVD-R.
I use Verbatim for DVD+r always.I went to Best Buy and bought Imation and Memorex DVD+r for the portable and neithe ones will let me Burn.
Here is my Burn error using Shrink - It's like Chinese arithmetic to me,just can't get it. Any help would be great ,Thanx in advance.

Car,Mike,
I guess I am another one of those P.C. dummies for everybody to see.Ha!
I have been running around here, there device manager, trying to update my drivers per NEC download instruction and the farther that I get out on that limb of instruction the more the whole thing is clouding up.
I have shrink,clonedvd2,dvd decryptor,Nero 6.6.0.18,AnyDVD and it was like going to school understanding (sort of)all of those programs.
Now the only thing this whole afternoon that I have accomplished is to turn my DMA of in device manager.
I guess if it had a carberator on it I could fix it.
I am really, really stuck this time.
Sorry, Car.Mike. Not venting to you.I'm just upset at myself 'cause I don't get it.

If you would like some advice here goes...

Dump your discs (Memorex suck) ask anyone here. Stay as far away from CMC Mag as possible. Try Verbatim, Maxell (made in Japan only) or most peoples favourite (not mine cause I can't buy them around me :( ) Taiyo Yuden. Second update your version of all your software (Nero's current version is 7.2.0.3b and AnyDVD & Clone DVD and/or Clone Cd current versions are here @ http://www.slysoft.com/en/download.html ) And last but not least try using + Discs, most DVD players and some Ps2 will read them better. If your PS2 has a mod chip (like mine) stay with the - discs.

joseymale,
Below is the approved media for your NEC. You might try and print it out. Imation or Memorex are not on the list so that is some of the problem. You might try and order the blank media from the internet. You can try Newegg, Meritline, Rima to name a few. You will be looking for 8X blank media

NEC drives generally don't like Memorex :( Did you try the updates at the NEC U.S. site? Try http://support.necsam.com/Optical/downloads/FlashFirmware/

Sort of a pain but they tell you step-by-step what to do.

-Do you believe you own your computer and shouldn't be told what you can run and do? Then say *NO* to Microsoft Vista!
-Since half the questions here involve media problems, here ya go: Only use Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden discs (get your TYs from Rima.com, not Supermediastore or meritline). Forget the rest, no matter what "brand" they sell under. Always burn at 4x speed regardless of the speed rating of this discs or your drive. If you have burn problems with these then you have to update your drive's firmware. For double-layer discs, only use Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn them at 2.4x speed.

Let me jump back to one of your original comments. You mentioned setting booktype. That applies to plus media disks only. If you make a backup to minus media, booktype does not apply. So, set your booktype to ROM for compatibility and don't worry about changing back and forth at all. The other comments sounded great to me.

My 2 cents.

NEC burners do not booktype, they only will do this if you are running hacked firmware. The new NEC burners will booktype +R DL media and not +R media. If you want to booktype you will have to dl the hacked fw or just use -R media for compatibility.

I don't know if there is any modified firmware for that old of an NEC for bitsetting/booktyping but here is Liggy's and Dee's f/w page for that model http://liggydee.cdfreaks.com/page/2500/ You need to update your f/w http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1837

As stated by rulisky, there is no need to unset booktype to dvd-rom when burning dvd-r media since dvd+r media is the only format that can be booktyped dvd-rom. It will have no effect on dvd-r's
