Hi there! I'm new here and want to back up my owned DVD movies. I have burned a few with DVD Shrink but am now running into problems with encrypted dvds. Can someone recommend ripping, decrypting and burning software that I can download FOR FREE? Thanks so much! Corinne =)

there isn't such a software. but there is a combination of software that are free, with great quality and nearly perfect.
just follow this steps:
FabDecrypter to HD/VobBlanker if need be/shrink to compress/ IMGburn to burn.

Nero Recode2 or Shrink using deep analysis and AEC/ fabdecrypter or anydvd running in the background/ IMGBurn to burn/main movie only mode= perfect.

Free programs that get the job done

DVDShrink
DVDFab Decrypter
DVDDecrypter
ImgBurn
VobBlanker

These will backup the newest encrypted disks. Just rip with DVDFab Decrypter to your HDD, use DVDShrink to compress and you can burn with Nero if you have it, or the free DVDDecrypter or ImgBurn.

I realize this is the Shrink section, but I have to mention DVD-RB free with HC encoder or AutoQMat encoder (I don't know if the free version of RB supports this encoder, but definitely supports HC). All software mentioned is free.

Great! Thanks so much =) I have just wasted half a dozen dvds (all coasters), so when I can afford to by some more blank dvd's I will give that a try. It's been a nightmare so far, having been successful at completing only 2 dvd's (both australian, go figure), but I will give it another try.

I have tried following the guide from top to bottom to copy Chronicles of Narnia (Regions 2 & 4) using DVD Decrypter, PgcEdit (PSL plugins + FixVTS)however after the first 'rip' through decrypter aborting when getting the L-EC uncorrectable errors, loading the PSL file and decrypting again, I am getting L-EC errors again. Is there a problem with my process?
Interestingly enough, when I use shrink by itself I am getting a Cycle Redundancy error after about 17% of the encoding. all of the above are at very slow read speads from my drive to - peculiar only to this disk.

any suggestions? I have also tried several other programs but none get very far.

Thanks.

Try ripping Narnia using DVDDecrypter in iso read mode, I tried it this way and it works. If you plan to do movie only then load it up in Shrink use reauthor and start and end frames, advance to the point where you see the WD logo come up and start the movie there. You should then have no problems as you have eliminated the 20 frames of blank from the movie.

just to let you know, Narnia has newer encryptions on it that DVDDecrypter (which is not updated anymore) won't do the job! Get DVDFab Decrypter .......that should do it.

DVDIdle.com/free.htm" class="korostus" target="_blank">http://www.DVDIdle.com/free.htm

once you get the files on the hard drive you should be able to load it to Shrink to finish the job. good luck.

@IHoe

I agree DVDD will not do this movie in file mode, however it will for some reason do it in iso read mode. It is far easier to just use DVDFab Decrypter, but you still can do it with DVDD on this one.

Arniebear..... I didn't know that DVDD would still do the job, especially with Narnia! what about DVDFab Decrypter? wouldn't that do it?

Alcohol says to use DVDFab then Voblanker then Shrink. I guess you can get around anything, doing many different ways! I think I used AnyDVD with CloneDVD on that one! Or I ripped with AnyDVD then used DVD-RB with CCE if the quality was not 100% in CloneDVD2!~

It is fun to try the different progs to see what works and what does not. Oddly enough you have to use DVDD in iso mode and not run AnyDVD in the background, if you do it will not work. I needed something my daughter could use on her backup as she does not have AnyDVD so I found this method. Although it would not work on the Greatest Game Ever Played, so it is no always foolproof. But it is comforting that DVDD still can work, miss this program immensely :(

Sugarcoma, also be sure to use good media such as Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim. I would recommend burning the media at half its rated speed, and be sure your drive's firmware is up to date. As long as you have an effective ripping program and burn good media at reasonable speeds, you should have no problems with coasters. After trying Taiyo Yuden over a year ago, I have not had a single one!

It sounds like you are on a budget, but the AnyDVD and CloneDVD combo are hard to beat for simplicity and effectiveness.

MS Windows XP MCE SP2, Intel P4 3.20 GHz, 2.0 GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce FX5600, Seagate 7200 rpm 200GB HDD, Sony SDMHS93 19" LCD, Field Value
Audio Adapter Creative SB0317 Audigy LS Sound Card, Liteon models,SHM-165H6S, 167to6c, All burns exclusively on genuine Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim media!

I have had problems with most programs but recently I came across clonedvd2 and it works better at shrinking and burning than any program I have ever used. Paired with any dvd it is invincible and works faster than dv shrink or Nero recode. If you can afford to I would recomend getting AnyDVD and CloneDVD 2 both by slysoft. the site is www.slysoft.com.

@Arniebear...... I love DVDDecrypter and I still use it, as I do many older DVDs, too! It seems that the powers to be knew how good this program was, how far superior it was, and snatched it out of our grasps as it made life sooooooo much more easier when it was running with all the updates! I know that we are not alone to miss the KING OF THE RIPPERS. But, for any consolation, it still works even on some newer movies, too! I still use it constantly, and if by chance it has a problem with the new encryption movies I move on to other programs... but I always seem to go to DVDDecrypter first! My love for that program won't die easily!

There is really only a few protections out there, which are basically blank cells, unreferenced material and misinformation in the ifo files. Just depending on how the movie industry moves it around is how the rip goes, the programs that are out there handle it, and AnyDVD and DVDFab are alway updated to accomodate the new movies. DVDDecrypter still does the majority of movies and some of the new ones, so it is still a viable program. Shrink has not been updated for years and still works. Both if you use a helper program will work. The developers of them were light years ahead of the industry. Cheers to all of them who help us keep backing up what we own.

For FREE? I would suggest to you DVD43(Recently Updated) SHRINK 3.2(Old Reliable) and VOB Blanker 2.0.1.1 or a trial Beta version(This program makes magic). Now I've got to say I've moved on to the better software in terms of updates, efficientcy, and quality, what I refer to is AnyDVD, VOB Blanker, Nero 6 Recode2, and CloneDVD2 all except VOB Blanker cost a little money and Nero 6 can be had for free in most cases included with newer DVD burners like SONY and others. Beyond the software invest in good piece of equipment like a SONY external or internal burner (Just my preference)You'll need a PC with lots of HD space and RAM. DVDFab is good too just a little slow for me.(And it too is free). DVD media, go with the few brands that set a higher than normal performance standard. VERBATIM, SONY, & TY,(Online) are your better brands cheap unreliable stuff (DVD's) can be purchased almost anywhere but know that the outcome of your back-ups will reflect this. Enjoy tinkering and you'll find your own niche for what you like. Remember, it's just a hobby:P There's no money to be made at this legally. So enjoy creating a portable back-up of your original purchased DVD's. Have Fun!!!!!:P

Some members advised/recommended for Newbies or those that are new to the DVD ripping and backing up world to use/get AnyDVD (a retail cracking engine by "slysoft") -- I know it (AnyDVD) is a great tool, but I believe it's "not" the right time for me to get this tool yet. I would definitely get it when the time arise someday in the near future.

There are tons of methods/ways to get around, yes... even "free tools" can still rip and backup any dvds/movies flawlessly (even new released). People are entitled to their own judgment and preferences, but below is what I used and still use on a daily basis.

<<< my usual method >>>

** DVDFAB Decrypter - (arguably one of the "best" FREE ripper at the moment)
** VobBlanker - to post process the VIDEO_TS.IFO file, to correct any invalid structural pgcs/vts, fake cells, etc. and "blank out" unwanted junks (i.e. FBI Warnings, rating screens/logs, previews/trailers, etc.)
** DVD-RB Pro + CCE SP 2.7 - to encode any movies with higher compressions needed.
** Nero Burning Rom or Nero Express - to burn

<<< other free method >>>

** DVD Decrypter + PgcEdit + PSL plugins + FixVTS - to rip any dvds/movies (arguably one of the best free method).
** DVD Shrink - to transcode (DA + AEC for "Max Smooth or Sharp" if needed for better quality)
** DVD Decrypter or ImgBurn - to burn

<<< AnyDVD method >>>

** enable AnyDVD or it's ripper and rip any movie/s to your hard drive
** use your desire "transcoder or encoder" engine to edit your movie
** burn with your desire burning engine

Best of lucks to all and happy burning.

At this point if you keep getting disk messages, you would be better off to return it and get another original. Sometimes even if the disk looks good there can be some other imperfection.

If i am going to rip a movie i use dvd shrink with anydvd on, I rip it to ISO and burn it with burncdcc a small freeware burning utility i found that is awesome i have never had a problem with it unlike the others decryptor nero shrink and the like.

But there is no one programme that is the top for doing everything in one go.
