Probably this belongs in the hardware forum, but is there any general consesus about compatibility of media to OEM burners?
My personal example: the HP 300c (DVD+R only) that came with my computer has handled just about everything I've ever fed it, except for some CMC 2-4X that everybody had trouble with. I recently added a Liteon external burner, knowing from reviews it would have trouble with cheap media. sure enough, if I burn a Playo it won't play back well in my DVD players around the house. But the HP burner ate them OK. CMC Magnetics discs (from the center codes) are what I've been using as "Verbatim," "HP" and "Kypermedia," I've lately been able to buy Fuji and Sony Made In Japan 1-8X that test as TY and burn in both without trouble--supposedly the current Gold Standard. I'm not so sure about Sony Made In Japan 16X which identify as "Sony Corp."
The problem is that I'm thinking of getting a new computer before MS Vista starts imposing new copy restrictions on what a computer will read and I'd like it to be one with a burner that will accept the widest range of media. HP seems to put a good, forgiving one in my model (a350n, now getting a little old) of unspecified manufacture. Dell, I've heard, installs a variety of makes in. Sony I don't know.
What I'm asking for is success stories, rather than failures, and what media aside from TY (which isn't always easy to get in stores where I buy blanks) performs ***reliably*** with the burner that came with your computer. For example, CMC product is roundly derided as crap, but it's used (rebranded) by an awful lot of Name Brand companies. You'd think it would tarnish their good name to sell something that didn't perform.
This may be asking the question backwards, but I'd like to know what ejects after a burn in your _______ computer on _________ media; what the combination is, so I can consider it when I browse complete system ads each week-end.
Thanks
Brendan

Hello Brendan.
If I were getting a new computer, I would simply make sure it had an open expansion bay and purchase a BenQ burner from newegg.com. That's my short answer to your question.
As far as burning to media, my BenQ 1640 has no trouble at all with CMC Mag, Ricoh Jpn, Verbatim, Ritek, Taiyo Yuden, etc. The only problem I ran into was a Ritek DVD+ DL disc, but the problem is not isolated to a specific burner.

CMC Mag media does perform, but degrades rapidly. Some have reported discs failing after just a few months. My personal experience backs this up. As far as burning Playo media, I would not waste my time. I've had to re-backup junk discs that failed. In the long run, this was an added expense and a pain in the neck for me. I was better off just purchasing good media from the get go.
BTW I am running a MPC Millenia purchased from http://www.buympc.com

A burner that will burn anything you slap in them?
Benq 1640 if you can find them,or the benq 1650.$40 at newegg.com. They'll eat any plus format you throw at them at the 8x and 16x speed rated media. Here's what I have used so far on all 4 of my benqs:
Aml
Cmags
Moser Bauer
Mitsubishi- Verbatim
Taiyo yuden
Hitachi-maxells
Ritek
Sony
Ricohjpn
Philips
Dash format:
UME
Sony
Mitsubishi-Verbatim
Taiyo Yuden
Ritek
Hitachi-maxells
With a benq, all you'll worry about is the plus format. These drives will booktype the plus format to dvd-rom,making giving stand alone players a higher compatability % of recognizing them. Give them the quality +16x verbs, and 8x and 12x burning is no problem.
Quote: what ejects after a burn in your __HP_____ computer on __ANY plus format_______ media; what the combination is
Pc systems: I've got a generic ebay pc with an athlon 3000+,a 598 mhz celeron,HP 1118x-b,and a 2.4 ghz compaq.
I've got benqs in all of them, and over 99% + success rate,95% stand alone compatability rate after booktyping/and on the fly rip/burn with 2 of those systems with dual drives.Just slower process speed due to limited processor and ram.1 coster every 500+ burns.
When it comes to PC systems and what drive comes with them: Just ignore them. Don't expect much out of them. Use them as a reader, but make sure a quality drive like a benq will do the burning. It'll save the wear and tear off your new burner.
My last 2 pcs came with: Khypermedia +8x and HP640c lightscribe. No burning for these drives. Low stand alone player compatability/too many crc errors/and too many coasters. The KH burner is collecting dust. That HP drive is being used as a reader and light scriber only..
I can burn quality media and crap media. I take precautions with crap media:
Unimportant data
Reduced backup target
Slower burn speed.
Stand alone players do have a harder time with them,as apposed to the quality stuff.
I purchase all my Plus format media locally.Including lightscribe/inkjet printable/DL/and regular.
I look for in the plus format:
Made in japan for sony/maxell/and fuji.
Verbatim
If none on sale for under 30 cents each,I'll find:
Taiwanese maxells-riteks
Taiwanese sony
Office depot +8x riteks/+16x ritek or ricohs-these you can get for as low as 20 cents each.
Make sure it's a quality dvd-rw drive. Benq/Plextor/Lite-on/Some sony/LG/pioneer/and NEC. Anything else,beware of.
I've got a total of 7 pc burners and a tv burner. There's a huge difference between my benqs and the non-benqs. All those drives will play their own backups perfectly, using either format if possible. Stand alone players do pick apart the non benqs. No disc errors are the usual culprits.
HP a1118x-b/athlon 64-3300+/BenQ 1650 BCDC/LG 8163B/Modded Wii/Epson-R300 and Ty Watershields!!!
