Last night I made my very first dual layer to DVD-9 copy using first DVD Decrypter to make an ISO image file and then Shrink to burn that ISO image file with Nero (I have StartSmart). Worked beautifully, a perfect 1:1 copy. (By the way, I never could find a post that dealt with this, I just had to adapt Scuba Pete's guide and cross my fingers that changing the DVD type in Shrink would do the trick).
But that did raise this question: What if I need to chew through encyrption that Decrypter can't handle, like that Sony stuff? If I use DVDFab Decrypter, how do I then use DVD Decrypter to finish making a DL to DL copy?
BTW: An FYI for those wondering about using Shrink by itself, I tried that and got a $2 coaster. This was after using DVDFab to ensure it was ripped. It stopped burning at the 5.5G point, probably when it was supposed to transition to the other layer.

Use PgcEdit to create your ISO file. This will set the proper layer break. Then burn with ImgBurn.

Hi. TOTAL newbie here. I have DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink, and DVD2One. Have no problems making dvd-5's, but not sure how to do dvd-9's. What version of Nero do you have? Can you please post exact instructions on how I can start burning 1:1 dvd-9's? Thanks!!!!

ImgBurn is DVD Decrypter without the decryption engine, right? If so, can use Decrypter or do I need to download ImgBurn?

Why not use DVD Decrypter to do an ISO Read, then turn around and ISO Write it back to a blank? Why would you need Shrink?

You need Shrink only if you like to add extra steps, or are more comfortable burning with Nero instead of DVD Decrypter....

I've decided to wait until all of the technology, as well as all of you techies, catch up to the 9 gig discs before purchasing a dual layer burner.
Once you guys have it all down pat, I'll buy one. Until then, I'm happier than a pig in slop to have my 4.7 gig backups.
It beats purchasing new DVDs when they get a scratch. A 50 cent backup is a darned good insurance policy.

You can rip with DVD Decrypter using Mode ISO read to harddrive.
You can either use DVD Decrypter in Mode ISO write/locate mds files/open/set burn speed/and burn
1 program setup for dl backups, and the quickest.
Or rip with DVD Decrypter in Mode ISO,open up IMGburn/locate mds files/open/and burn away. It's suppose to handle dl burning better than decrytper.
Problematic encryptions:I don't do a whole lot of dl backups, but I'd kick in my background ripper called AnyDVD . It helps dvd shrink/dvd decrpter/nero/clonedvd/and a slew of other programs to rip those newer encryptions. No extra step when it is activated.
Nero 6 does have some issues with the layer break. That's what Nero 7 was suppose to fix.

Krazvideo,
What do you mean until the techies catch up. Dual layer has been easy since the get go. Follow the steps saugmon mentioned and its easy. The only problem I ever had was with Nero where it clitched for a second at the layer break. I got dual layer verbs for a $1. I agree that with most movies I stick to the dvd-5's but for three hour long movies its worth spending the extra 50 cents just so I dont have to compress the heck out of them.

@Club42
May I ask where you were able to buy Verb DLs for a buck apiece?

I got 10 pack of Verb DL's from Best Buy for $20 and they sell DVD-5's 50 packs for $15 these days.
Thanks for the replies, but I'm still looking for answer to my original post here, concerning using DVDFab Decrypter. I've had to use it on a few DVDs (usually those made by Sony - the movie studio not the blank media maker) that DVD Decrypter couldn't handle. As time goes on, this will happen more frequently.
Can I use DVDFab Decrypter to rip and then DVD Decrypter to burn? Anything tricky to watch out for?
Oh, and the reason why I used Shrink was simply that was the program I was used to and had already wasted a DL disc on the first attempt. So I stuck to what I knew worked (Shrink and Decrypter) until I could learn another way from you folks (I needed to get the DVD back..somewhere).

Riphound,
You can use DVDFAB Decrypter to rip the DVD to HD but you can not use DVDDDecrypter to burn it as DVDFAB Decrypter does not create an iso file as that is the only file DVDD burns. If you then want to burn using Nero or Shrink you can but the 2 programs have problems w/ the layer break. That is why people use DVDD as it makes an exact copy of the image file. Use the trial copy of AnyDVD and use it w/ DVDDecrypter to rip the iso image file. You just set up DVDDecrypter a little different when you use AnyDVD

Sorry should have said that. Best buy had them in their over stock shelf for $20 for a 20 pack. Otherwise they are $40 for 20.

I am in the same situation I think.
I ripped a DVD to my hard drive, using DVDFab. How do I now burn a DVD+R DL using what DVDFab gave me?

You can use Nero burning Rom to burn the files that Fab gave you onto a DL disc but my preferred method of doing this is to use Imgtool Classic to create an iso file of the ripped movie and burn with Imgburn. This method won't keep layer break info like Iso mode in DVD Decrypter, but this method is sometimes necessary when DVD Decrypter can't handle the movie (I don't have AnyDVD).

What do you mean by that?

So has anyone tried using file mode in DVD Decrypter and or DVDFab ripping and burning the .VOB files with Nero 7? I did not know it was this complicated to burn to a 2 layer disk and I have yet to try it myself.

For DL discs, the best way for me has been to use shrink to create the ISO file and also remove the layer break. And set it to burn the file with Decrypter. When I tried it with only Decrypter in ISO R & W mode. The layer break did not go smooth. But it has with the above method. Just set shrink to handle 9GB discs and to remove the layer break. Decrypter selects the optimum layer break as it burns. They are not too hard but I think everyone just can't bear to experiment with $2 discs! It's easy when 4.7discs are $.25!

Does DVD Decrypter and DVDFab Decrypter retain the layer break when they rip? I noticed the layer break settings for ISO W in DVDD, but saw no option for keeping or removing the layer break like DVD Shrink has.

One thing you DON"T want to do is remove the layer break. If you use PgcEdit to create an ISO file, it will set the layer break properly for burning with ImgBurn. Set the booktype to dvd-rom and burn at 2.4 and you will have a nice dvd.

That was not the question I asked. I asked, Quote: Does DVD Decrypter and DVDFab Decrypter retain the layer break when they rip?
As pointed out, Decrypter can set the layer break, so a DL backup won't be derailed for need of the layer break (though possibly not as optimum as the original).

The answer is yes. When you burn, choose the mds file that was created by DVD Decrypter. This file has information as to the layer break setting.

Excuse me, but I'm playing devil's advocate here. Where did you come by the information that the layer break info is only retained in the mds file? I like being able to verify sources. I've had successful burns using Shrink and DVD Decrypter and not having used the mds file.

Can somebody tell me if it is best to remove the layer break with Shrink or not? And what difference it makes since I will be using DVD Decrypter to pick the optimal break for me...

Hmm... since you probably wouldn't want 2 sets of layer break data, I suspect you'd want to remove layer break with Shrink if letting Decrypter make the setting. Don't hold me to that, I'm still learning, but that's what normal software usage suggests.
