Hello everyone. I started using my Playstation 2 again the other night after a couple of weeks of inactivity and I am now have an extremely annoying problem.

I would play a game for a bit, then after 15 to 30 mintues of use the drive will try to load part of the disc, fail and completely stop spinning. This has the effect of stalling whatever game I am currently playing and requiring a reset. After a reset I'll be able continue playing then in another 15-30 minutes the same thing will occur.

This occurs when trying to play both original copies of games and backups on DVD-R.

As an example of what I would go through, I'd start up my PS2 with Bootmagic 3.6 put in the game disc that I'd want to play and carry out a special load. I'll be playing fine when all of a sudden the disc stops spinning completely and anything that would cause a read from the disc will cause the game to hang.

Specifics of my system are a slimline PS2. It's one of the more recent models that requires the MagicKeys II set.

Due to some issues I was having with the piece that holds down the sensor underneath the top of the PS2 case, I have open the case up and araldited that sensor down. The job was quite clean and I do not believe there is any excess glue anywhere else.

When the problem occured I was worried that what I glued down had been displaced but I opened the case up and checked the sensor. It is still very, very solidly glued down.

I still use the other two pieces of the MagicKeys II set to hold down the disc brake and the sensor that sits above the power button.

As previously mentioned I am using bootmagic 3.6 to boot international / backup games.

I have tried using the search function as well as reading the stickied lists and I couldn't find anything on this particular problem. I'd appreciate any help anyone can give. Also, apologies in advance if this question has been answered before.

If you need any more info please let me know.

Thanks,

Orion

If you moved the ps2 to a different location than it was 2 weeks ago and it's in an enclosed space, it could be overheating.

Yeah, I thought about that. Actually I thought the area where I placed it to play last night might have been a little dusty (as well as being enclosed) so when I tried to play it tonight I moved it to an open aired space on the floor. Didn't seem to help, the problem kept occuring.

Also if it was an overheating problem I would expect that after I reset due to a freeze there would be a reduced time before the next freeze occured. My reasoning is that since the playstation has already been running for a while it'll be warm and so it will take less time for it to build up to a temperature where it will lock up again.

Those slimlines do seem to build up a crazy amount of heat though.

yeah they do build up a lot of heat and a lot of people have had overheating issues. even by simply putting the system on carpet rather than a table. If that didn't help you I don't know what else to suggest especially since your problem occurs with originals as well as backups.

You said you use magic keys. Have you tried playing it with the lid open? Or partially open. I only close my lid when I'm not playing to avoid dust. Play two to three hours at a time. No heat issues yet.

Hrm...

Nope, I haven't tried that yet. I guess I'll give it a go tonight and see what happens.

I'm still not sure that overheating would be the cause of the problem for the reasons I stated earlier.

Thanks for your advice though, I'll give it a go and see if it orks.

I know this is a hard thing to diagnose and is probably pretty rare, so if anyone else has some other things I can tr, please let me know.

Sorry for the double post.

I tried playing last night with the lid permanently open bu no luck. game lasted 10 minutes before it stopped reading and stalled. I don't know what to do about this, it sounds completely random and it's frustrating as all hell to deal with.

Any other ideas on what I could try?
