i bought the new hddvd player from BB over the weekend and my TY dvd +r never looked and sounded better, this player is just great...only problem is i can not play a dvd all the way through without getting audio dropouts, freezing, and sometimes lockout

so i called toshiba tech support this morning and was told that the player does not support the +r, only the -r...so i am lucky that my +r played at all...either i backup my +r with -r which is a pain in the butt since i have about 300 +r or return the player

the +r have no problem playing in my other players, i am not sure if i booktype...if i booktype would this solve the problem?

anybody else got the hd-a1? how do you like it?

I would think if you book-typed it to DVD-ROM it should be as easily playable as a DVD-R. Worth a try...

Which DVD-RW burner drive do you have? Can it booktype? This will solve your issues with +R media. If it can't booktype, you can get a burner that will BenQ DW1650 from newegg for under $40.00 shipped. Easy to install and a great drive.

How far into the disc before those issues occur? Half/ 3/4 or end?

That tech stated that drive does not play plus format. I myself don't believe specs when it comes to what stand alone players. It's all about compatability. A true compatability issue, then you have gotten one of the following messages on that player:

No Disc
Dirty disc
Wrong format
Wrong region

All players are different at what error they'll give when you have a format issue.

Try this free handy tool to see if your backups are booktyped:

http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd-r_tools/dvd_...

Open up dvdidentifier/insert one of your burned tys/select that drive/click identify/click notepad/and paste it in your next post.

Since your player recognizes your plus tys, something else is wrong:

1) Are they real tys?
Where'd you get them from?
What's their MID code? dvd identifier will tell you.
Look at the bottom of them for a code similar to this:Example: TG001162,just on the inner hub of the dye.

Gotta confirm the media quality because lots of fake tys are out there.

2) Burn speed: How fast did you burn them?

3) Dvd-rw drive: What's the brand name/model#/and firmware version. Dvdidentifier will tell you all this info.

4)What programs you using, mainly burn engine?

5) Any compression?

6) Burning to the outer edge of disc?

7) Paper/sticker labels?

Any or a combination of those things can cause those issues. Also many more possibilities.

You've got a good backup because your other players play it.

Edit:

Here's some info and user feedback from that player:

That techie is full of sh*t. Specs says it'll play plus and dash, and other owners confirming that.

thanks everybody for the responses, especially you saugmon...wow what a detailed reply

my player is a standalone i/o magic 16x and when i try to booktype in decrypter my drive does not show, it says unknown... when i use Nero the booktype is checked...i have used both with shrink and burnt at 4x and probably to the outer edges, labeled with sharpies

TYs are fuji & sony MIJ i bought from staples and coded as real TYs...seems like the glitches are near the end though some are just random, one dvd gets a "can not play this disc" message when i load it, this disc was recopied with Nero and is now playing...i will do all my burn on Nero and hope booktyping will take care of the rest

the toshiba HD-DVD is a realy good player because with the discs that work, audio and video are excellent

I have better stand alone playing results using Nero,as apposed to DVD Decrypter. Just a slight variation, and a stand alone player can pick it apart.

Sony Ty's: Excellent. I was hoping it wasn't ebay or shop4tech tys.

Issues at the end of the movie: Try reducing backup target a smidgeon. I keep mine at 4370 mbs on all my quality media.Gives a hair more compression, but keeps it away from that outer edge.

I/O magic outsources their drives,so very hard to tell which one you got.Benq/Empa/BTC/and more. Use dvdidentifier and find that model #/coding for that drive. Locate the current firmware version to help idenitify it: Example- It could be genuine benq 1620 with a fw version of B7L9 or a re-badged benq stating "ATA-DVDRW 8x16x8x16x" with a version of G7L9. Very difficult to know what you get with I/O drives. Look at this weeks staple's sales, those I/O's are turning up as Rebadged Benq 1670s.

Nero/dvd shrink combo can booktype some drives- Benq 1620 for example, but not all drives- Benq 1640 for example. DVD Decrypter can also booktype. Some models have to have special programs/hacked firmware/or a combo of both.
