I am very new to the burning world, and have so far backed up all my movies with sony +R's(ver.1.2/1x-8x)(made in taiwan)I have been using shrink, defab(when needed) and nero. I have a hp media center pc with a lightscribe dvd+- writer. I have not had a problem so far, as every disc I have backed up plays in all my standalone players(including a ps2)
I have been reading these forums and everyone keeps mentioning these taiyo yuden discs. Are these discs really better? Which one are good ones? Where can I find a legitimate dealer of these high-end goods? Basically what is the best/cost effective media on the market(with high compatibility on stand alone players) and how does it compare with the discs I've been using, and where and how much should I expect to pay for it? I'm so confused with what's actually good or bad...etc...etc....ANy help would be greatly appreciated!!

Yes, they are really better. TY only packages two "brands," One is called a 'valueline'. But both are excellent.

There are 4 main places you can get them without worrying about them being fakes. Rima, Supermediastore, Meritline and Newegg.

I'm not sure what you mean by best/cost effective. Could you ask in different words?

As for price, you need to check all four places when your ready to buy. They sometimes have sales, promotions (like free shipping), etc. but prices are close to each other.

The Sony 8X +R made in Taiwan is a Sony manufactured media. They're high quality, so you're already using the "good stuff". Besides making their own, Taiyo Yuden also manufactures media for other brands, such as Sony and Verbatim. The last batches of Sony 8X +R made in Japan that I've purchased over the past few months have been Taiyo Yuden. I always check each purchase to make sure of the manufacturer. The free DVD Identifier does the job if you don't already have software that will do it. So, as long as Sony sticks with it's own and TY, you're okay with the brand and format you're using.

I have been using Verbatim DataLifePlus which I purchased from newegg.com, they also are very good quality DVDs and only cost about $25 for 50 and that is shipping included. Out of about 4 spindles I have had maybe 4 costers...

Supermediastore is still running their free shipping on 8x Taiyo Yuden Valueline..........100 for 28.00, and you may get the TYG03's because they are advertising as TYG02 and TYG03, some posters have gotten the 16x.

Arniebear,

I have not used TY's as of yet, thanks for the link to supermediastore.
As I stated I have had real good luck with Verbatim DataLifePlus, but I see that the TY's that you pointed out are a whole lot cheaper.
Would you do me the favor of looking at this link and telling me what you think of these 8x TY's that are $.27 each.

DVD-R-media-silver-matte-spindles.html" class="korostus" target="_blank">http://supermediastore.com/taiyo-yuden-4x-DVD-R-media-silver-matt...

I am using DVDDecripter and DVDShrink to burn my back-ups and I only burn at 4x so these look to be optimal for me.

Some links if they do not show up the first time, just hit edit and do another paste, it takes then. That is why you will see a lot of post edits with certain links, DVDIdle is one I always have to go back over.

I have used the 4x TY and 8x both are excellent, never a Coaster. I also use Verbs and like them, but I am partial to TY's. I buy the valueline which is the .27 ones, they come shrink wrapped, and I already have the 100 cakebox so I just transfer. I have ordered them from SMS, Meritline and Shop4Tech and have not gotten a bad batch. They work on all my burners, NEC 1300a, Plextor 716A/UF, BenQ1625, HP640c and Liteon 1633SX with no trouble.

I read some of the other posts about TY's and I went ahead and bought 100 of the premium line at $35.00.
The way you guys talk about them I am sure that I will have good luck with them.
Thanks for pointing out the SuperMediaStore to me, with the free shipping it is a lot cheaper then where I have been getting my Verbatim's.

Thanks again.

Who is the manufacturer of the Verbatims you've been using?

GETaklu
Who made your Verbs?

So others will know what a person is really talking about, the media being discussed should be listed as Sony/TY, Sony/Sony, Memorex/CMC, Verbatim/TY, Verbatim/MCC, or whatever (brand/manufacturer). A lot of brands sell media by different manufacturers and some aren't as good as others. Verbatim is normally good across the board, just curious as to who made yours.

Like lawndog, I've also purchased Fuji/TY in the past. The Fuji 4X +R used to be Ricohjpn (good stuff) and when they started selling the 8X +R format, I found it was TY (more good stuff). I haven't used Fuji lately, so I'm not sure if they stuck with the TY(s) or not.

Those Verbatim/MCC DVDs are excellent media. Just to show you can get good media in other brands, Mitsubishi has also manufactured media for TDK, Sony, Fuji, Maxell, Philips and others. The problem is, some of those brands haven't always stayed with the better manufacturers.

nstathis
Isn't the code on those Singapore DLs MKM (Mitsubishi Kagaku Media)? They are good media, though not made by MCC (Mitsubishi Chemical Company) of Japan. Probably a related company.

Last purchase I made at BB I picked up the Fuji 16x +R to try them out, since I had not tried 16x media out, been using up my 8x. Wanted to see if my old NEC1300a would write to the new media since there really is not that much support for this old drive anymore, but the drive just keeps on ticking. Anyway these are what I got, not the greatest but the have been consistent in burning, and even on the old NEC even though it only half recognizes the media.

PLEXTOR DVDR PX-716A 1.09 (ATA)
Current Profile: DVD+R

Disc Information:
Status: Empty
Erasable: No

Free Time: 510:03:29 (MM:SS:FF)
Supported Write Speeds: 4x, 6x, 8x, 12x, 16x

Physical Format Information (ADIP):
Disc ID: PRODISC-R05-01
Book Type: DVD+R
Part Version: 1
Disc Size: 120mm

I basically bought them because my Plex's have developed some aversion to Sony MIT -R media. They will start to burn them at 8x but then change speed to 4x somewhere in the burn. Does not do it for any other media except Sony. I contacted Plextor and they stated not to use Sony in their drives, but Verbatim, Fuji, Maxell or TDK. So since the Fuji's were on sale I decided to try them and they have been burning fine. It all comes out to what the burner is happy with, not that I advocate CMC Mag/Phillips or Imation.

snippet re Verbatim & MKM -

Recognized for its research and development strength, Verbatim has an unmatched history of being first with the industry's fastest optical media while maintaining its reputation for providing the highest levels of reliability and durability. The key component in achieving 8x speed DVD+R media is Metal Azo recording dye, a proprietary technology developed by Verbatim?s parent company, Mitsubishi® Kagaku Media (MKM).

So, Mitsubishi Kagaku Media owns the Verbatim brand and the Mitusubishi Chemical Corporation is the parent company of MKM. Here's a snippet from an article I found on the joint development of the DVD +R DL between Philips and MKM, http://www.dvdrw.com/press/doublelayer.htm . Before I shouldn't have said "probably related" as the corporate umbrella forms with MCC owning MKM owning Verbatim.
Quote:

I still find it interesting that major manufacturers of digital media sell media manufactured by other companies.

Arniebear
Just switch formats and you should be able to use all the MIT Sonys you can get a hold of, unless the problem is only with select Plextor drives. I just recently finished burning a hundred or so of the Sony/Sony 8X +R MIT DVDs without a single coaster using my PX-716AL. I suspect the Plex rep was just referring to the Sony manufactured media because if he had meant the brand, he would have had to rule out offerings by Verbatim, Fuji, TDK, Maxell, Samsung, Panasonic, and others as Taiyo Yuden manufactures for those as well as Sony. If he was saying the Sony manufactured media in general, why am I having such good luck with the 8X +R format? Sometimes those blanket statements by tech guys don't make sense when you look at the overall picture.

No problem with +R format in Sony, just the -R and it is only MIT, which is coding as Sony08D1. They will be fine at 4x but have a problem at 8x. It is both my internal and external Plex716a's. Just cannot figure it out.

BroBear,

I checked my Verbs once a long time ago and I can't remember who the manufacture was.
I don't even remember how to check them any more to tell you the truth.
Isn't there a program you use to examine the media?

If it's only the Plex drives with just a problem between the 8X and 4X burn speed with the Sony 8X -R, I'd suspect that the problem is merely the firmware not being fully compatible with the media; especially since they burn okay with a fixed 4X setting. It would be nice if you could check them out on another brand of burner.

GETaklu
The easiest way to check is with the freeware app, DVD Identifier. You can get the download here, http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/ . It's a small app and all it does is ID DVDs.

Overall the Verbatim is good media. I was just curious who made yours. I've found it interesting in the past that some people prefer one brand over another with the only difference being the brand label. So far Verbatim has done a pretty good job of staying with the better media. It's one of the more trustworthy brands. They did sell some CMC at one point, but not enough of it to get a bad rep like Memorex.

I agree on the fw being the problem, I keep hoping Plex will come out with another update. Maybe if some other people complain to them besides me they will. They were quite quick to say we do no recommend that media and the burner has no problem with TY coded Sony, which is hard to come by in my area.

Hopefully they're still sending those Sony/TY DVDs my way. I'm down to about my last 50 and it's time to restock. I don't get upset when I can only get the MIT Sony +R, they work real well with my Plex and HP burners.

I have a feeling that a lot of AD members live in my area, cause all the stores shelves are cleaned of MIJ media. Used to be able to find it but not anymore. So I will stick with my Verbs and TY's and Maxells all work great.

:)

the pickings are pretty slim over here in CA in my area as well~ :) most of the brick and mortar stores are stocking the 16x rated media these days, the 8x are becoming much more difficult to find~ :P

i, for one, am glad that i STOCKED UP BIG TIME when the pickings were good, i'm sure you guys remember when the 8x were immensely popular for $19.99/50-pack~ :) media was about $0.40/piece on sale at bestbuy, circuitcity, compusa, etc; but prices HAVE dropped to the $14.99/50-pack level at this point~

the 8x MIJ DVD+R Fuji and Sony available EVERYWHERE about a year ago still remain my personal "favorite" choice locally, but as reports around the country from various members have shown, they are becoming quite scarce and you will be pretty lucky to find them :) naturally, the 8x DVD+R Fuji and Sonys that are "made in japan" are the YUDEN000T02 Taiyo Yuden made discs, so far after thousands of pieces used, they are my FAVORITE media at this point in time~

i purchase 90% of my media from online or directly from Taiyo Yuden these days, but feel that Sony media is pretty good quality on my various drives/burners. there are other members that have had GREAT success with Sony media, regardless of country of origin, but for my burners and my individual setups, nothing beats a good Taiyo Yuden disc for my backup purposes~

;) I'll take TY(s) just about anyway they come. I don't mind if they're Fuji, Sony, Verbatim, or TY branded.

By to way, to change the subject a bit, I found a neat little free tool. Check out RightMark and their RightMark CPU Clock Utility. It lists and monitors a bunch of data for your CPU. You were wondering if you had a Gallatin or Northwood. Among other things the utility lists the core and revision of the CPU. When you build the PC for your father, you can check and see for sure the easy way with the utility. The other fun method is tracking down all those nice numbers stamped on the CPU. For those who like to OC, this is a handy little tool for checking things out; it even gives the core voltage, multiplier, cpu frequency and load figures.
