I had tried to MOD one of my friend's fat PlayStation 2s(Version 7) so that he could use a homemade slide card. I got the cover out all right, but, when I tried to show him how to use the card(while the Master Switch was in the "Off" position), I got the cog to move, and the tray wouldn't fully come out. I then tried to force it out(bad idea), and now, the tray is stuck open, and it only goes in about one quarter of the way. Now, there's something wierd to this. When the tray is pushed in, the cog starts to move over to lock the tray, and, to me, it seems like the cog came out of its railing(that little plastic path near the On and Eject buttons), because the cog locks the tray while I'm trying to push it in. So, what do you think, did the cog come out of its railing or is it something else? What should I do if the cog came out of the railing(nothing that has to do with taking the console apart, please)? If it's something else, what should be done? I NEED TO FIX THIS TRAY!

My console collection: Version 14A PlayStation 2(chipped), Version 7 PlayStation 2, PlayStation(both models), Wii, Gamecube, N64, Super NES(original from US and Japan and Mini), NES(front and top loader)Model 1 & 2 Genesis, Sega CD, Sega 32X, Atari 2600, Sega Saturn, Sega Dreamcast, Sega Master System(Model 1 and 2), Atari Flashback 1 & 2, FC Twin(2 in 1 NES/Super NES clone), GN Twin(2 in 1 NES/Genesis clone), Atari 7800, Intellivision II, TurboGrafx 16, GameBoy Color

I'm afraid it does involve opening up your mates PS2 but its pretty simple I had to clean my little brothers lens today so:

1. First turn PS2 upside down and take all screws out but mark next to where the large screws come out (cellotape will do) to avoid messing up your PS2.

2. Next turn the PS2 the right way up and it should open like a book but be careful if its a PS2 with the power switch attached to the top then be carefull that you don't pull on it.

3. Once open above the PS2 DVD tray there will be some small screws unscrew these and lift the top off.

4. Next you will be down to the actual tray unscrew the remaining screws and slide the tray out.

5. Now that you have the tray make sure the cog is as far back as possible you can do this by pulling I think its a white latch to the left so if the tray was in then it would be fully closed.

6. Next slide the tray in and make sure it is in the closed position then put the tray screws back in and the top of the tray just place over the top so you don't get blinded by the laser.

7. Next power up your PS2 but obviously be careful you don't electrocute yourself, and now it should open and close fully.

8. Put it all back together again and remember be careful when using the slide card.

PS If you run into any differences DONT try to do it yourself just ask and I'll try my best to answer you in due time.

Is that the only way to replace that cog in place? Please, tell me how I can do it without opening up the console.

Could pulling up the tray have been a factor in removing the cog from its rail? I did that when I tried to use the card, and think I pushed it too high. I did this because I couldn't fit the slide card I made(it was made of corrugated cardboard).

paul1085-Do you have any pictures of the procedure? I'm a little confused without any pictures.

Sorry it was about 4 oclock in the morning when I posted only just woken up now, I know what your thinking lazy bastard well for your entertainment only I'v scoured the web and come up with a couple of pictures.

1. Remove bottom screws, remembering to mark whwere you've taken all the larger screws out so as to not knacker PS2 up when putting them back in.

2. Turn the right way up and open like a book, but be careful of snagging the power cord if there is one and continue to take all visible screws off the top of the DVD drive and take this off.

3. This picture is of the actual tray take steps 4 up until finish on my previous post I have marked where the screws are likely to be.

The cog will be white and it will be directly under this tray all you need to do is put the tray back in as far as possible and then slide into the position of the cog its quite hard to explain but once you do it yourself you'll understand.

Jobs a good 'un!

Fixed! The cog actually did come out of the rail. Only thing is, a bunch of ribbon cables(including the one for the laser :S) were taken out, but they were not damaged as everything works fine. Perfect.
