Hi everybody, I hope anybody can help me on this:
I have an stand-alone dvd burner, brand RCA and I use memorex dvd+r and verbatim dvd+r with no problem, on wendsday I bouth memorex dvd+r media at walt-mart and when I tried to use them in my dvd recorder to record a tv show it told me that a defect was found on the disc and it did not processed it. I looked into my previous memorex dvd+r media and the only difference is that the old one (the one that works) is 8x and the new one (the one did not work) is 16x, the colour of the recordable surface is also different (blueish in the new, a little purple in the old)
Doi you have any idea about how to make work this media?
I do not undersatand why it did not work.
Any comments are appreciated.
Regars!

Memorex sells media made by a variety of different manufacturers. From one spindle to the next, you don't know who actually made the discs unless you use DVD Identifier (or the like) as noted above.

When you purchase Verbatim discs, you know they are made by one company.

It's best to stay with Verbatim because you know what you are getting...

You're using a stand alone dvd recorder on your tv.

What's the model# of that RCA recorder?

You stated 8x was ok and 16x weren't.I'm not clear on the rated speed of those verbatim. Were they 8x speed?

Possibility that your burner's firmware isn't programmed to handle 16x media. That firmware controls the writing strategy for drives. All dvd media has MID codes. This is where you find the different quality levels between the many different codes.

The 8x media is being phased out for the newer 16x media. Older drives will have firmware issues for this newer media.

Media quality is also critical for both pc dvd-rw drives and TV stand alone recorders.

If it's a firmware issue, you may have to update that burner's firmware. For stand alone recorders-I am not 100% of the route you go for updating them. You'll have to find the right firmware/latest update/somehow burn it to a disc on a pc/and insert that disc into your tv recorder and somehow download it. There should be some info in the Home Theater room, under dvd recorders.

BTW:

We can also find you some good deals for plus format media locally.Wal-mart charges way too much. Take tomorrows Office Depot maxell sale.Look for the Japanese +8x's and you'll yield Hitachi maxells on the spindles that say made in japan. The taiwanese +8x maxells will yield Ritek-R03 and are very good. You get 2-50 pk spindles for $30.That's 30 cents each, not counting the governor's share.Look on those wrappers for Made in Japan.
If Office depot don't have the japanese maxells, take the ad over to wal-mart to price match them.Either of those stores should have those Maxell +8x.My nearby walmart has loads of them, just nearest Office Depot is over an hour away.

Be cautious of the Maxell +16x.Again,possible firmware issue.

Mort81: I saw your post on that verbatim sale. I'll have to order some. I guess it's only 1 rebate per customer?

saugmon,

I've still got a lot of verb +r's from the last time newegg had that same special otherwise I'd be stocking up too. Anybody needing good media would be crazy not to get in on that deal. Great media at an excellent price. Just got my $25 rebate the other day. Verbatim's rebates are good as cash in pocket, for me anyway. As you know verb +r's are my fovorite media.

@Movies27, I think AABBCCD means avoid Memosux because you don't know whose disks you will get. Personnally I h ave not had any problems with Ritek G-04, but still will prefer TY and Verbs any day.

Rolando, use the Memsux media for giveaways to your not so favorite friends, save the TY and Verbs for the good stuff, you know like your private stock of the good scotch..

Hey guys/gals, I was over at cdfreaks.com last night and you wouldn't believe some of the threads going on in their DVD-R media room. They're talking about why HP cmags are awesome and Imation cmags suck! Rumors about fake cmags! LMFAO on some of them! These were including mods/addicts/and senior members. I kept hush, not wanting to start a war.

Majority of their scans were with Benq drives and lots of 97+ scores. They do take their firmware very serious over there.

yer they do take it very seriously over there and i go over there when i want to know who really makes certain discs. like my Indian MCC004 are made by MBI (Moser Bear India) - the hub codes are to be found over there just like we know how to look for TY codes.

i don't get very vocal over there as i'd be shot down for dismissing Cmags. However i know that 1000s of logfile problems with cmags et al, is better to veer ppl away from those discs, as opposed to ppl on those forums doing endless scans on cmags and tweaking firmware. Things that the majority of ppl (ie the average joe on the street) just don't/won't/can't do just to get burns to work on such media.

hmmm...wonder who brought that to light here? LOL *self pat on the back* :)

i will give cdfreaks credit regarding specific burners, firmwares and the details pertaining to such, BUT, i know that if i were to ever be even slightly "vocal" w/ a single post regarding CMC MAG, i would be shot down by the newbies, seniors, addicts, mods, and prolly the admin would ban me HIMSELF for instigating such a riot~ hehehe

have a good one all, blivetNC's sig says it ALL~! now THAT is priceless
