I was wondering if anyone has encountered this situation before.Basically, my slim PS2 won't read dual-layered games anymore. Here's what happened:

A year or so ago, I got to the end of Xenosaga and decided to put off finishing it. It was then that my brother obtained a swap magic disc and I got interested in burning/copying/playing imports. So months go by and I am happy with being able to play these games. Now a few weeks ago, Isee xenosaga 2 in a store and decide I might as well buy it since it was only $20. So I do. Of course, first I want to finish the first one, so I put in the disc regularly(no Swap Magic) and start up the PS2. Gets past the Playstation 2 logo and then once its about to show the company logos, it makes a horrible grinding noise. I immediately turn it off and inspect the dvd and PS2 for any damage... nothing. so I try again. Same thing.

So to investigate what happening exactly, I turn on the PS2 with the top open(the way I would have it if I was swapping games) and start it up. This time, I keep my eye on the laser's red light as it loads and see what happens: the grinding noise is the laser trying to read past the dvd(and failing, of course). I turned it off and tried loading my other non-burned games. Success. They all load perfectly. I try xenosaga 2. The first disc loads alright but the second one doesn't load(same thing that happened to XG happens). So I deduce that the 2nd disc must be dual-layered and my PS2 simply won't read em anymore.

So I was wondering if anyone knows how to fix this without having to make a copy of my own Xenosaga and burn it to a standard 4.3gb dvd.

So help, anyone?

I did it!

here's a not so great quality video of what happens:

http://www.sendspace.com/file/zdzdjf

only 152kb. I recorded it with my phone's camera. If you notice, the laser moves to the top and the grinding noise starts. The video and sound aren't synced, so that's why the grinding comes before the laser moves

edit: I didn't realize it was an mp4 file that might not play in WMP regularly. Here's a standard AVI:

So no one has any suggestions? I was thinking that I mighg have to adjust my laser or something, but I don't want to mess up how it reads the rest of my games(perfectly)

*sigh*

Months later and the problem is still there. I figured I don't 'have' to play dual layered games or I could atleast copy them to a single layer by ripping the movies I have already watched/whatever, but now I find I can't watch DVD9 movies either.

Still no suggestions, right? >_>

Not had any problems with mine at all. Reads everything including DVD9. But i have a modchip.
Oh, and you do know that Swap Magic can not play dual layer back up's right?
But most dual layer games can be ripped down to fit on a DVD5

Stumbled upon this thread after having the EXACT same problem. Thought I should post my findings in case this happens to anyone else as well.

With my slim PS2, I simply turned the thing on it's back (top, whatever). No grinding, and Xenosaga loaded and didn't have any problems after that. Sometimes I'd have to sort of hold the disc lid down as I put it on its back, but I haven't had an instance of being completely unsuccessful yet.

Hope that helps. We gotta stick together when it comes to Sony and their shit hardware.
