I just went out and bought a new batch of Verbatim DVD+Rs and tried burning a DVD but I've tried 5 different DVDs and I get the same errors. There MUST be something wrong with the burner since I had the exact same problem with an entire box of Fuji DVDs a couple months back. Is it even possible to have 2 ENTIRE 50 packs of DVDs from two seperate companies have the same problems?

Could the settings have changed when I updated my Drivers firmware or re0installed the ASPI levels? How can I check, and what do I look to switch?

Here's the error I got when i tried again: (I've tried 10 different disks and 4 different ISO files and I get the same thing.

Nero has a better burn log. Download and install the Nero 7 trial and do a burn, and then post the log in the Nero section. If you don't know where the log is, just ask Creaky. Or ask in the Nero section.

hi all

yeah seems odd? i would from what you say look at the drive re the firmware you say recently upgraded and the aspi layer

can you burn cdr's?

do dvd originals play ok?

you can check aspi from the adaptec folder, or search this on your pc - aspichk.exe and run it

Nothing here to see, move along folks.

I'm downloading the Nero trial now to see if that helps. (It's going to be a while- damn dialup!)

I checked the aspi layers last night and they are still ok. I have burned about a dozen dvds since the firmware upgrade, so I'm at a loss.

I think I'm just going to return the dvds and see if it was just a bad batch. (Knowing my luck lately, it wouldn't surprise me if I'm the one lucky enough to get two bad batches in my last three purchases.

I will try burning a CDR right now since there are a couple I need to burn this weekend anyway.

I'll post back after trying to burn the CD and then again IF the Nero download ever finishes.

Well, the CDs aren't burning right either now. I gets to the writing process and the drive starts making weird clicking noises (similiar to the noises it makes trying to read a scratched DVD) and then after a couple minutes it says it cannot complete the CD writing process.

What do you guys think of this, it was suggested on the imgburn forum- is it worth a try?

You don´t need ASPI. Take my word for it. ASPI is old and redundant. Your problem may be a corrupt SPTI driver. Download the CloneDVD demo (which installs the ElbyCDIO driver) and change the interface used in the ImgBurn settings from SPTI to ElbyCDIO and see how you go. Grab CloneDVD from here:

you say you're using Verbatim DVD+Rs....are they 8x? I can't imagine you buying 4x media.... aren't they all out of that? I noticed in your log:
I 22:17:07 Destination Media Type: DVD+R (Disc ID: MCC-004-00) (Speeds: 2.4x, 4x)
If you bought 8x media and it's only reading the speeds up to 4x then it might be a firmware problem.

and here is the Beta Firmware update to B107: http://tdb.rpc1.org/#GWA4040N

you're drive is a little on the old side.... maybe it's time for a new one? I realize now that your drive can only burn up to 4x.

I already tried using the 1.19 upgrade shown on the Dangerous Bros. page....is that the one you wanted me to try?

As for the firmware page, my laptop is an HP, so that one won't work right?

The Verbatim disks are 16X, but I have Imgburn set to burn at 2.4.

Ihoe, I looked into update the drive, but I was told that the drive in not exchangeable in my laptop (HP 5070us) so I'm stuck with this one unless I get an external.

Is there a way to "go back" to the older firmware I had before the moron on HP told me to upgrade the firmware to fix my problem with the ASPI layers even though I told him my ASPI layers were gone?

What about CD-ROM Tool SPTI 11.26.02 at http://www.majorgeeks.com/CD-ROM_Tool_SPTI_d2801.htm ? Someone on the other forum suggest using CloneDVD because of it's SPTI. Is this the same thing? Is there a way to check my SPTI?

I don't know the answer to your question but what about the C111 beta firmware update by Danerous Brothers? it might be worth a try. and you can always try the trial version of AnyDVD and CloneDVD2. The trial version lets you use it for free for 15days! If it works for you then do it: WWW.slysoft.com use both at the same time.

I'll try that firmware- nothing else to try I guess.

I jsut tried using CloneDVD and I get the same problem saying there is an error, probably due to bad media.

Read on another thread about someone having trouble that they shoud try "crossflashing" their firmware with liteon firmware to fix the problem. He did it and it worked.

Would it work for my drive?

Only if you know for sure your drive is a particular rebadged lite-on. It has to have the same hardware and chipset.

The guy at HP was wrong. XP doesn't use the ASPI interface. The only time it shows up is when a particular app carries its own, such as Nero. Flashing your system with firmware not approved for your drive can cause problems as well. Old drives that aren't being updated can be a problem. Your sources didn't sound like factory approved firmware. Not sure exactly what happened, but it sounds like your drive has headed south. As IHoe suggested, it may be time for that external drive, if you can't find a replacement.

Now it gets weird-
I had an older CD I had a few pictures on so I put that it and tried using DeepBurn. I hit the wrong folder in My Documents, but anyway, it was able to burn the Word, Excel, and BMP images in that folder.

So I tried burning pictures, but got a HARDWARE ERROR: TRACK FOLLOWING ERROR. When I tried burning and ISO image onto DVD I got MEDIA ERROR: (12,128).

How could it burn files, but not ISOs and pictures?

The site claims they're the official versions. Since the HP rep sent you to the site, things appear to be legit. That just confirms what IHoe was saying, sounds like a bad drive, especially with those chattering sounds. The only other explanation would be serious corruption of the OS. Have you had problems with anything else not working properly?

THe OS was something else I was going to try. It seems like everytime I notice automoatic updates from Microsoft I have problems. When I tried a restore to back when I could successfully burn, I noticed their are a few updates that happened this week.

I was planning on backing everything up eventually and "starting fresh" since a co-worker gave me XP professional- I guess now is as good a time as any to try it.

As for other things not working properly- I have noticed today that when I go into my computer and try to click on the DVD/CD drive or My Documents, it stops repsonding and I end up having to us the task manager to close it- which also closes explorer. Maybe there is something.

If I do the re-start- what exactly do I need to do after I back up files? DO I just put in the new XP Pro CD and let it run itself and then reload everything else?

Now it just got weirder- so I go get some Maxwell DVD's (I know they're not the greatest but all Staples has is cheap stuff) and the DVD burned with no problems- other than it only going at 1.2x rather than 2 or 2.4x like it normally does.

Is it possible that something could have happened to the DVDs and CDs at Best Buy to make them all not work? (Something like being rubbed on the security thing, or something??) Or is it possible that the Verbatim DVDs came from a defective batch and that Fuji CDs AND DVDs are just not compatible with my drive since the last batch of DVDs taht didn't wrok were Fuji and the CDs that don't work now are Fuji are as well.

Well I just burned a Cd using a new Sony CDr I just bought. Still got the Hardware error when trying to use DeepBurner, but when I used My Documents/Copy to CD/Burn CD that worked fine.

So maybe I'm all set afterall (crossed fingers and knocks on wood).
We'll see later this week when I try to return the Verbatim DVDs to BestBuy and again when I need to make a couple CDs for friends using iTunes.

Personally I like to format the drive and start over with a fresh install of an OS. The old "clean slate" theory. ;) Just backup things you don't want to lose. I have an update version of XP which updates from older systems. Irregardless, once you have your files backed up, just put in the disc and follow the directions. If you're not formatting, be sure to clean the system up before doing the install. Don't want any malware around to foul things up.

If things are working okay, walk softly and hope for the best. I still suspect you may have some drive problems.

Yeah, the plan as of right now it to buy an external burner (saw some at BestBuy for $79-99) and then in the summer when I don't need the laptop on a day to day basis, bring it to the local computer shop and see what they can do about installing a newer one. I figure that way, the one I have now will still be OK when I need to burn at work and I'll have the external one when doing my main burning at home.
