Hello everyone, I am new to this forum and am probably posting this message in the wrong place. I will try to be brief, but you'll just have to excuse me if I drone on a bit. I've done a search but can't find a thread relating to "Verbatim Advanced AZO". My local electrical retailer is selling a 100 cake for £25. I've been in and looked at the package and they say, made in Taiwan, Is this a good deal. They are also 16x, and I am currently using TDK 8x, Manufacturer TDK, Media type 002. I have had reasonably good success with these, but they are usually about £15 for a 25 cake. By the way, I bought "1Click" about a year ago before I discovered all the free stuff thats available, and also discovered this superb forum. Recent backup successes have been "King Kong" "The Lion, witch etc" and "Crash" using any combination of DVDDecrypter, DVDshrink and DVD43. I have also tried the trial version of AnyDVD but I don't think I'll be pressed into buying it while the other programs are still working. I did say I go on a bit, So, back to the original question. Should I rush out and buy these Verbatim discs. Many thanks in advance.

Those 16x verbs are excellent.MCC-004 for the +16x and MCC03-Rg20 for the dash 16x. Top notch stuff. Majority of verbatim is made in Taiwan, still some of the highest quality media out there. Singapore also makes verbatim-mostly the dl and they are the finest DL media there is. India also produces some verbatim, and those are the ones to be weary of.If you like those TDK,just wait till you get into those verbatim 16x's. They are designed to perform at a faster burn speed. For me,I get too many crc errors when burning and 2.4x and 4x using my benq drives.

100 cake for £25

I'm not sure of what the exchange rate between the pound and US dollar. My top price is $30 per 100 when on sale locally.I prefer the plus format, which runs a lot higher on the internet sites.

This is 16x media. There is a remote possibility that you may have to update the firmware of your dvd-rw drive. You'll notice if it fails during the lead-in phase and kicks out an illegal disc.

Edit: If my calculations are ok, then 25 pounds equals:
47.2774 USD at todays figures. That's 47 cents apiece,so it's a little high. Still worth it in my books if that's one of the few quality media brands around.

25p a disc, bargain. i only ever buy discs online as the walk-in stores are always far too expensive.

hey. thanks for your quick response. I'm sorry for the delay in replying, but the wife keeps on calling me :) I guess I'll go down tomorrow and get some. Regarding the cost, believe me when I say that these are cheap in the UK. I do a bit of researching and even e-mailed a US company to see if they exported, because even with P&P they would still be cheap. They did reply but couldn't oblige. The current rate of the £ $ is about $1.82 so that makes them about $45.50 v.v.cheap. One thing I perhaps didn't make clear is that I usually burn at 2.4x or 4x and as the Verbatims are 16x will I have any problems?

Those verbatim 16x were designed to be burned faster. My experience with them, the ones I burned at 2.4x gave me too many crc errors. It made those backups un-rippable for extra copies. 4x was ok,but way too many PIF errors.

In all my benqs,8x and 12x burns give the best results. My 1620 with over 3500+ backups also confirm the need to burn MCC-004 +16x verbs at least 8x for best results after checking them this morning. Backups at 12x scored 97,while backups at 8x and 4x scored around 95 on the Nero disc quality scans.

Then lets hope your burner doesn't have a firmware issue with that newer 16x speed.

What's the brand name/model#/and firmware version of your DVD-RW drive?

basilj: What format of those verbs are you seeking?

Thanks Saugman, I suppose I should first explain about the computer I use for CD & DVD backups.

Its a self build Via Technologies
Bios Award Software
HD Main Maxtor 40g, slave Fujitsu 6g (This used to be the main drive before I updated)
Processor Pentium 3 733mh (all I could afford at the time)
ATAPI DVD DD 2x16x4x16 [CD-ROM drive]

The Firmware was updated about 6 months ago (G7V9)

My other computer is a 'Porche':)

As I previously mentioned, I've had quite a good success rate at 2.4 or 4x. I used to burn at higher speeds and you can probably guess, like a lot of newbies, I had a lot of failures at the beginning. Apart from fumbling in the dark with the software, poor media etc., I finally got the hang of it.

Although I have only just joined this forum, I have been reading it for quite some time and it's only through the knowledge of all you good guys out there that I finally figured out what I was doing.

I hope all this makes sense to you. And are you saying that perhaps it may not be a good idea to try the Verbs.

I only use DVD+ since the drive spat out the DVD-

You've got yourself a rebadged benq 1620. Also known as the retail version. They manufacture the Retail which has the G7?9 firmware, while the bulk version has the B7?9 firmware. Should be a very good drive and I believe that G7V9 is the latest firmware version for that rebadged benq. I know the bulk drives definitely prefer the plus format.

Your pc specs are on the small side, but I have no trouble burning those verb +16x at 8x using my 598mhz celeron with an extra 30 gb harddrive. It's even burned +8x sony at 16x.

The +16x verbatim are awesome in my benq drives, and i have to go at least 8x on them. You may want to try the same.I'm not sure how your rebadge drive differs from my bulk drive, but should be pretty close.

Thanks for getting back to me Saugman.

The name on the box is Artec (yes, I keep the boxes-you never know)

My new comp had a CD-Rom drive, so I took it out to install the DVD writer into it but when I tried it out with DVDDecrypter I got the message, Doe's not support greater than 4.7G on Fat32 system. ( you bet I was surprised) Anyway decided to keep the old comp running and bought a CD writer for the new comp, which happened to be a Benq. I have since converted it to the NTFS file system - both comps are running XP pro and SP2.

Yes the old computer is very slow compared to this one, but it doesn't bother me. I just insert the disc, check on it from time to time regarding applications, progress etc, and as long as it doe's the job, I'm happy.

I don't have any problems playing them back in standalone player, since I realised it's not a good idea to label them.

I'm going to go out now and get the Verbs and will get back to you later to let you know how I got on.

Thanks for your help.

I was a little skeptical on those 16x verbs when they came out. The +8x MCC-003 were awesome and getting very hard to find. After burning 600+ MCC=004,I may have had 1 Coaster and it was a playback Coaster.

Avoid burning them at 2.4x.Myself,and a lot of other members found out the hard way that these verbs burn better, faster.

That 598 mhz celeron pc is probably my best backup pc. Slow, but never a Coaster. Now after my gf downloaded Yahoo messenger,It takes DVD Shrink 10 mins to do the quick analyzation. But when using DVD Decrypter Mode ISO read and write, she'll go faster than my Athlon 3400+ main pc using the same DVD Decrypter iso read/write mode.

Hi again, Just got back from the shops and taking my dog walkies.

I am attempting to back up my copy of "Traffic" - Michael Douglas et al -

Opened DVDDecrypter 3.5.4.0 and it said possible structure protection found, 1 suspect file, inserting dummies etc. So I've closed that and am using the latest DVDFABDecrypter, it seems to be sailing through it at the moment. I will then use Shrink 3.2 and when I come to burn, I'll go for broke and set it to 16x

I've connected up to my old computer for this message. Problem! Everything seemed to be going fine, DVDshrink 3 1/2 mins to analyse, 1hr 51sec to encode, and then...

What I usually do is insert the blank disc, auto play gives me the option to burn using "copy to dvd se" which is a utility of "1Click" and works for me everytime, only this time it didn't.

I started burning at 16x, error! tried 8x, error! tried 4x, then max speed, and got an error each time.

I then inserted my tried and trusted TDK and got a flawless burn.

Good job I asked in the shop if I could take them back. Looks like I'll have to stick to my TDK's

Is it worth me posting the log file. I don't understand all the codes, but it does say -try a different media-

What do you think?

Download and use this free utility http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/ and give us the manufacturer name and manufacturer ID of your verbatim media. What firmware version do you have? It may be that it just needs to be updated. I don't recommend burning video files at 16x. I would keep the burn speed to 8x.

Hi there, already got that utility, it goes like this

Unique disc identifier (DVD+R:MMC-004-000)
Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation
I.D. MCC
Recording speeds 1x, 2.4x, 4x, 6x8x, 6x16x,

They look genuine to me.

My drive is as previously mentioned with firmware G7V9, updated about 6 months ago.

Think I'll return them tomorrow and get a box of TDK's.

I'll say again I think all you guys are brilliant in that you go outta your way and bend over backwards to help a fellah out, but as I don't really have a genuine problem I'll just keep plodding on with the TDK's until I get a real problem.

The one thing that came out of this was how effectively DVDFABdecrypter handled structure protection on the original disc.

That's very suprising. I've never had any problems with media made by MCC. I thought you might have got unlucky and got a batch of verbs made by moser baier. Good luck.

If you can post that log,we'll be able to see more details of that burn.

Look at the bottom of those discs that failed to see the dye color change if it actually started to burn. It'll be solid purple,or discoloration towards the inner hub on the dye.

Look on the label of that spindle and see if they were made in Taiwan or India.

Sounds like a firmware issue or bad batch of media.

Try one that is towards the bottom of the spindle. Keep it at 4x.

I did a search on a firmware updates page and you were right Saugman, it's a rebadged Benq DW1620. I think I'll just cut my losses and return the Verbs for my faithful TDK's:-(

As I said it's not really a problem, just one of those weird things.

Anyway I'm not in the same league as you guy's, I am quite selective in my choice of movies and will not back-up for the sake of doing so.

Apart from recent blocbusters as mentioned earlier, other favs are of course DeNiro, Pacino, and specials, Manchurian Candidate, House of Flying Daggers, Crouching Tiger... and Shawshank to name a few.

Looking forward to the Da Vinci Code on DVD (probably about Christmas time)

It's been fun and will get back to you all when I start having serious problems :)

Definititely looks like a firmware issue.

There's ways to make that rebadged Benq 1620 drive into the actual Benq 1620 with the B7-V9 firmware.A little tricky and risky, but an option in case you run into that same problem later on.

Around my way,8x media is disappearing quickly. The sony and verbatim 8x are gone, maxell are almost gone. All the newer 16x media replacing the older 8x media. Firmware issues will soar here at AD.

I'm truly sorry to hear that, we are a bit slow in catching up this side of the pond. Hope it isn't going to mean going out and buying new Writers!

Anyway, just got back from the shop with a new batch of TDK and disk identifier says they are Moser Bauer or something like that, Made in India. Ive left the file on the hard-drive, so i'm going to check this out

O.K. it's cool, took 15min 26sec at 4x - played it briefly through WinCinema and it looks OK -

I don't think I'll try converting my player, I baulk if someone says it's a bit risky. I want to run and hide:)

There are some things I'm good at, like reformatting and as previously mentioned, converting a FAT32 to NTFS.

Thanks again you guys :) B
