I would really appreciate any help. When I try to backup a DVD I record from TV (i record only one show per DVD)I keep getting an error message stating "cyclic redundancy check". This occurs sometimes at the beginning of the back-up and sometimes with only 7% to go. Is there anything suggestions on fixing this? Thanks.

Welcome to aD!
Your drive is telling you it doesn't like the disc - could be scratched, dirty, poor quality media going south.

So try cleaning it off and if you have another drive try that one. Some drives are better than others with these 'problem' ones.
Another suggestion is to try ripping with DVD Decrypter - imo a great ripper for these type of discs.

If you by chance are 'burning on the fly' turn that option off - better to save to the hard drive 1st even if temporarily.

One time I kept getting this error and after I defragmented my hard drive it stopped doing it and I could copy the discs it wouldn't let me before. It may just be me this happened to, but try defragmenting the hard drive if you keep getting the CRC.

Good advice - a hard drive that is really defraged can slow things down.
imo it's good to do a defrag regularly.

I am trying to copy Star Wars III that I purchased. I am using CloneDVD and AnyDVD. I have tried to copy into 2 separtate disks. I was able to copy chapters 1-25 but midway through chapters 26-51 I get the "cyclic redundancy check" error message. I have also tried DVD Shrink as well as Dvd-Cloner III but no luck. Any suggestions would be most helpfull.

It sounds like a bad disk, try cleaning it or take it back. Although some CRC can be caused by protection the majority are bad disks. Star Wars III should not be a problem, nothing special on it. I did this with an old Xcopy.

Ok, thanks for reply. I have cleaned the disk with no luck. The disk does play fine all the way through the movie with no problems so is it still possible that it can be a bad disk to copy even when the disk plays fine?

DVD players can sometime be more forgiving of scratches than a PC reader. Try the disk in another reader/burner if you have one and see if it works it sometimes does. If you have not then use the AnyDVD Ripper, just right click on the fox in the tray and then rip. If it is still a no go, then more than likely the disk has some kind of imperfection and it is best to return it.

Ok, just tried to rip with AnyDVD but no luck. It got through about 75% then got stuck. Unless you have any other suggestions, I will try to get a hold of another copy to copy. Thanks for all your ideas.

@Dougers
Give dvd derypter a shot - when all other apps failed for me this one sometimes was just the trick. Link is above.
If that fails then like arniebear suggested time for an exchange.

Yes, I tried that to but same problem. I found out the problem is in chapter 38 so i am using CloneDVD to put chapters 1-37 on disk one and 39-51 on disk 2 so i will be without chapter 38 until I get a new copy to copy. Thanks arniebear and binkie for all your help and suggestions.

Well I played back the original disk again and this time I am not able to get through chapter 38 so you were right that it is a bad disk. Thanks again.

Try cleaning the disk, or get another original. This is an older pic and it is doubtful there is anything special on it.

You can try isobuster and see if that will do it.

DVDFab Decrypter is about the best ripper for scratched disks.

http://www.dvdidle.com/free.htm

Try another drive, and see if that will work.

I Have found DVDFab Decrypter is about the best ripper for scratched disks also. My wife bought a DVD at a garage sale and it kept hanging in one spot so I made a backup with DVDFab Decrypter and it took along time but it made a backup copy then burned it to a new disk and now that bad spot scrambles for a second but keeps playing.
