Anyone who has tried the following, pls give me feedback. I am currently using Imation CMC which is really great, burn 300, never had a single problem BUT with all the bombarding on CMC, I want to play safe and get 2 other diff media (I have chosen Verbatim as one) as "back up" for my Imations. can only get MIT stuff, no MIJ in my country. And pls don't say TY, absolutely cannot get. So here goes what is currently available:-

Emtec media by Interaxia AG001

Maxell media by Ritek R03/002

Imation ForceField media by Moser baer R04 001
India (need feedback from people who really have used this, not those who have an "opinion" on india made media)

At the end of the day, I need media that is more ble to keep the movies for 5 decades.

Thks everyone.

I'll let some one else commit on your other DVD choices but wanting a DVD to last 50 years brings up a question.....what will you be able to play the disc on if it manages to last that long? By that time there won't be any DVD players, that you can bet on....it will probably be some sort of ram memory that doesn't have any moving parts or some technology no one has even dreamed of yet. You'll be making copies of that DVD to other media just to be able to keep it playable for future generations. Best of luck.

Yup, I meant a disk that's reliable enough for me to be moving the data about with the times - not the EXACT disc I burn to keep 50 years. Generally, I would transfer my originals to a new disc every 5 years...

Take a look at this web page:

http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm

Out of the choices listed, I'd go with the Maxell media by Ritek.

i have had (longterm) awful, horrendous problems with Imation of various different codes (as you don't know what you're getting each time you buy Imation). anyway, i have also used a helluva lot of Indian media (Verbatim, the media codes escape me, they were primarily 8x -R i think, used many many 100s of them without issue). Imation feature in the link in my signature, i just laugh whenever i see any Imation discs now or cry when i try to get data off any of the Imations we stupidly used at work for a year or two for importanty customer data.

what i will say is i used something like 500 Bulkpaq Orange discs when i started out with dvd's and these were fake TY, and were great for a while then started failing on playback so my point is i used a lot of crap discs for quite a while before i hit issues with them. it took me ages to eradicate those subpar foul quality things from my collection and now i only use/have decent Verbatim/TY media and unsurprisingly i have zero problems with these or subsequent backing up from any of these

@dolphin, just came back from the website u gave. One thing caught my eye....under HOW TO DETECT BAD DISC, it mentioned Hitachi DVD Rom as bad equipment. Anybody has any ideas? Because I use a Hitachi DVD Rom as my source and LG4167B as destination, though I am seriously thinking of repl Hitachi with Asus CDRW cos LG doesn't burn CDR sharp like Asus. Right, I'll go with Maxell

i also replaced my LG 4167B, one of a faulty batch, could never burn above 4x. replaced with a Benq DW1650, far better drive. just something to mention in case you notice problems on the 4167B, i've seen a few threads about this on different websites

@creaky, Im just curious, when did you start and stop using Imation. I know Imation is CMC Mag, but the omes they send to Malaysia are really good, a lot of commercial people use it to keep data like 4-5 years now... Generally, I know brands like Sony, Imation, tho CMC are making them, there is a certain amt of quality control. Frankly, I had trouble playing Verbatim on standalone player but never an Imation. I don't know....

Keep in mind that the article was written in Sepetember 2005, so it is kind of dated.

If your looking for a new drive, I would recommend the BenQ DW 1650. It's the best one for the money, IMHO.

I think people in different parts of the world get discs at different times and quality.

Here in the States, Imation hasn't been very good.

@cynn - we were using Imation up until Christmas or so, for data dvd's of customer data at work. i even tried using one or a few of these same extact discs at home and they were foul beyond belief, loads of crc errors. i'm sure the link in my sig has more info but i will never go near anything with Imation on the label again (other than some rewritable dvd's i bought for my DVD recorder, however i very rarely use my DVD recorder so don't know how long it'll be before i know if those rewritables are any good or not).

Anyways, basically we were having to do about 3 copies of every single customer dvd we were burning, and the amount of crc's/data consistency across all 3 copies was always different, sol the best we could offer the ppl who access these dvd's was to try one of the other 2 copies if(sorry WHEN) they hit corruption on a certain customer's files on a disc.
