After trying to find good solutions for these damn hot slimlines I think I may have found the answer if the ps2 can provide the power via usb. I don't have the fan to test yet so I figured I'd ask. For those who want to inform me of the fans that have been made for the slimline, please don't bother. It's nice they've started making them but they look like they're very low quality.

That's exactly what I use for my PS2 - I take the laptop cooler and use it on my PS2, I think it helps to some extent... though I'm considering putting a fan at the top of the PS2 as well, as the top feels pretty hot after a while

Yes the PS2 uses standard USB 1.1 protocol. If you think about it, if the PS2 doesn't supply TTL through the USB port, then a lot of things (USB flash for example) can't be used with the PS2

A member by the name of vcbc gave me these links which show two of the three fans I have seen which are built specifically for the PS2. The second link has the fan I would think is best, but I'd like something more powerful personally. That one looks like it's a PCI slot fan that has been converted to work on the PS2, but that's just an opinion. Thanks VCBC

As far as other cooling solutions go I have considered doing a number of things. The first one is the idea I mentioned with a notebook cooler which I definitley think would help, but I do believe notebooks respond alot better cause they have openings on the bottom which allow air to flow in and out or atleast that's how it was on mt old notebook

The second idea involves a spare PSU if you happen to have one(No motherboard necessary with the link below). I asked on afterdawn for alternative ways of powering case fans but this is the only way I heard of so far. With the use of the spare PSU,you can add fans, fan controllers,hd coolers, and PCI slot fans like you would with the PSU in your computer. Obviously the PS2 case isn't built to add say a 80mm fan,but with this powering method and a little cutting, it would be possible. http://www.directron.com/2powersupplies.html (link provided by BigDK, Thanks)

The third idea involves a passive hdd cooler rather than a powered one like I mentioned above. A passive hdd cooler should help aswell but I don't know by how much. Basically you are just placing an extra heatsink over the hotspot. I believe it is slightly too large to fit snuggly and would need to hang off the edge a little if you need it out of the way of the fliptop.

I will be testing the PCI slot fan (PCI fan won't fit too snuggly either but will do the job) and one of the HDD cooler ideas tomorrow I hope. I will post the results. Any other ideas would be especially welcome at this time cause I will be spending money on the test. Thanks All.

For those who have any interest in cooling down their Slim PS2 either because it´s too hot or just to prolong the life of your system then I think adding any and all ideas you might have would be a good idea.

I have tested my idea above and it has produced the results I was looking for. I bought a HDD cooler and an 80mm fan. I would like to say again that a PSU is needed, but it must be adapted to think it's attached to a motherboard and this is done by adding a single wire to connect two points on the motherboard connector. This link will show you how to easily do that for either an AT or ATX PSU http://www.directron.com/2powersupplies.html .If you know of any other ways to power a 4pin Molex or 3pin fan then please tell us.

80mm FAN:

I started out by building an adapter out of acrylic so that I could get the 80mm fan to blast air into the front vents of the PS2. After testing I was dissapointed when I noticed cooling was very minimal but that was simply due to the fact that my 80mm fan was providing a weak blast of air. This would have certainly worked with a more powerful fan.

HDD COOLER:

I also tested the HDD cooler right over the hotspot, and although it was certainly keeping the outside of the case cool, I am really want cooling inside of the case. I couldn't help but notice that 1 of the 2 40mm fans on the cooler alone was more powerful than the 80mm. I figured if I removed those fans from the cooler I could put 2 fans on the PS2. I proceeded by building 2 casings so that I could have 1 fan blowing air into the front vent and a second sucking air out the back.

After building it I tested each fan individually and then together. Both produced results, in one instance decent and in the other fantastic. A single fan was nice and made it noticably cooler, but when adding the 2nd, it suddenly is like a frindge and there is no heat to speak of. I was over the moon for those who care. I would like to have more silent fans but I can always get that later. Cooling comes first.

I luckily needed an extra 80mm fan in my computer which is why it was worth the risk buying it but it was only 7 euros as was the hdd cooler which wouldn't hurt my computer either. For those who don't have a spare PSU you should know since you don't need a good one that you could get one for as little as $10(maybe <) if necessary. I promise it's worth it if you don't mind workin with your hands.

I would also like to add photos but I don't know how yet. I'll go check that out and post again. Even though the immediate problem is solved, I will still be searching. If you don't like my method I would still like to hear someone say that I am not alone in this search, or just say how the idea could be improved.

I knew if I'd done more research I would have found an adapter to plug a 3pin fan into a usb port but I am gonna have to stick to my spare PSU for the moment. I like the post MasterChu, and that is precisely the kind of solution I was hoping to find in this thread.

I feel like I am a little late with my claim since your timing is stupendous but I literaly just yesterday switched from a setup I mentioned above to a new one which is strikingly similar to the idea you have just brought up but still has its share of differences. When I get the opportunity I'll post some pics.

I am very much looking forward to critisism as I have spent much time on it. Thanks alot MasterChu for the much needed input regarding this cooling matter. I hope to see more ideas soon from anyone who cares to give em. I would recommend an XCM case for modding rather than an origional for those who wish to do cutting for reasons which I feel are obvious(cause that's what I did)
