hi i tried cleaning mu ps2 from the inside because when i put a cd inside it would only say reading disc like 3 times and then would stop. so while i was cleaning it the silver ribbon came off and know my ps2 won't turn on what do i do

the silver ribbon is not completely torn off it's still hanging at the top of the ps2 but the other end thats supposed to be attached next to the cd drive is not attached where does that go i hope this helps

please say that the ribbon itself isn't torn, if it is it's toast. There should be two tabs on each end, the long blue tab end connects to a same sized connector on the main circuit board underneath the disk drive and above the expansion bay, it is between two other similar connectors. The tab side should be down. Use the tab to put it in and don't put too much pressure on it. Essentially, just put it back in ;)

Remove the 8 screws holding the two halves of the outer case together. Turn PS2 over. Turn the top half over and place next to the lower half. Carefully lift the hardware out of the bottom half. Now as I am to understand it the ribbon is still connected to the switch assembly, so just leave leave that side alone. Now place the free end with the long blue tab side down into it's slot as mentioned above. The ribbon then fits into a T-shaped slot along the edge of the drive. Carefully place the hardware back into the lower half of the case. At this point you can plug the power cord back in to test if the red LED comes on, just don't do it without the hardware being in the lower part of the case. The ribbon should be the only thing connecting the two halves. Tipping the top half of the case to vertical should provide enough slack in the ribbon to allow it to be taped to the top of the disk drive, but this isn't necessary. Be sure to not allow the ribbbon to get pinched when the top is put back on. Turn over and replace the screws, and you're good to go. If you need more help please be specific about what hold up is :)

look mate,
why dont you save yourself some time and take it to an electrical repair shop, instead of asking simple questions that you would have to be stupid not to know how to answer, i mean pluggin in a ribbon cable, just undo the playstation and plug both ends of the cable in, instead of wasting everyones time!,

You might need only to clean the laser lens. But it could also be a laser gain or media or burning problem. Try with both psx and ps2 originals and backups, then report what you find.

It is trying to read the disc but finds that it can't and gives up. Read my last post.

This is from another post.....but it should help you
It may be a dirty or "dust contaminated" laser lens. Either send it to a Sony authorized repair center for cleaning, OR if your PS2 is out of warrenty or you don't care that you void the warrenty, take your console apart via the 10 or 8 screws (depends on your version...V1-V3 models have 10 screws). Once you have the top cover off, remove the four screws on the ROM Drive, Take a Q-Tip and a little rubbing alchohol and gently rub in a circular motion the lens. Swab the lens with the dry end of the Q-Tip to dry and, as Kelly Bundy would say..."VIOLA" you have cleaned your laser lens and should now be ready to game some more. Now, I don't claim to be an expert on PS2 repair, but I have fixed a good number of PS2's this way. If that doesn't work, you may want to think about getting a new laser lens assembly....or a new PS2. You can find laser lenses online. Just Google it!!
