Hi ronnies
When you click back up - click on the burn setting tabs - you can set your burn speed there. Shrink will keep that as the default until you change it.

Hello Binky7: I have a problem with having two (2) DVD Burners. One only goes to 8X, the other goes to 16X. There are two separate burn settings as follows; Maximum, 4.0, 8.0, 12.0, and 16.0 the OTHER is shown as Maximum, 1.0X (1,385kb), 2.0X (2,770kb), and 4.0X (3,324kb).
The last listed will only, so far, play in "maximum" and at 16X? What speeds are designated by 1.0x (1,385kb) etc.? Is one of those an 8X speed? Ronnies

If you use both burners to burn and use a different speed for each than you will need to change your burn settings depending on the drive you pick.
The 2nd set of speeds you listed for 8x burner don't show an 8x option. 8x writes at 11,080 kbs -4x writes at 5540 kbs.. Sounds like the disc in this drive may not support that speed or if no disc is in the drive this drive may not list all the available burns speeds until a disc is inserted.

Hello Binky7: The DVD burner which has the speed listings of 1,385,
2,770, and 3,324kb is the HP DVD740. It also has "lightscribe" capabilities. It is a 16X Burner ( marked on the package). If I put a 16X disc in the burner, it will ONLY burn at 16X, it doesn't give me an opportunity to burn at any lesser speed - that I am aware???
The other DVD burner is rated up to 8x speed. It seems that these two DVD burners are somehow crossed up. I have no clue what the problem is. I guess I'll just have to use 8X speed discs... Ronnies

According to my knowledge, in order for you to set the the burning speed to your desire, you "must" have a DVD-R or DVD+R ready inside your burner.
Good luck and happy burning.

Yes, i agree with Binkie and Alkohol, if a blank DVD is not in the burning drive, then Nero will only list Max and the lower burn speeds 2.4 and below. I have seen it do this on my own computers and every time, it was because i didnt have a disc in the drive i selected for the burn.
without a disc in burner:
with a disc in burner:
I believe Shrink acts the same way.
Yep, i knew i had checked this out before. Lucky for me i still had the pics saved on my HD.
and...
TA DA!!! A picture is worth a thousand words. 4 pics times 1k = 4k of words.. Whew, im tired.. :)

Hello Binky7 etal - I have followed your instructions as outlined by you below and it DOES NOT hold true with my burner. I used "DVD Shrink" placed a disc in the burner that "is to be copied". It went thru it's normal encode procedure. THEN I removed the Disc (to be copied) and (just to verify your procedings) left the tray empty(no disc)and it showed the "Maximum", 2.4X,2X,and 1X burn speeds as you have demonstrated that it would... THEN I inserted a blank DVD+R 16X disc in the Burner tray and the burner speeds DID NOT change. They remained the same reading as when the tray was empty???? I noticed on the bottom of the "Backup DVD" layout there are two (2) boxes the one reads "Book type DVD ROM" and the other reads "Burn at least 3mm? (DVD+R/RW High Compatibility Mode". I have BOTH of these checked and my discs are usually burned in "Book Type DVD ROM".
I know I am being very definitive in my reply but it's the only way that I can convey this mystery. Incidentally, I never have seen the "Nero Express" layout that you displayed below???? HELP Ronnies

I suggest you dont take the disc out, put it in there and leave it until it burns. Nero for me will recognize a blank put in just before the burn, but i think Shrink has to be restarted with a blank in there to get it to see the disc and give you the burn speed settings.
If that doesnt work, then maybe your firmware is out of date? Just a guess on my part. Even though we are in the Shrink forum, if you post a Nero burn log, we can give you some more answers. As it is now, we have very little data to work with. I will show you where the Nerohistory file hides.
Nero 6 history log location: Program Files>Ahead>Nero>NeroHistory.txt
Nero 7 history log location: Program Files>Nero>Nero 7>Core>NeroHistory.txt
These things record all burns, and we only need the last one. The burns are seperated by something like this:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
====== *** NeroAPI, History File *** ======
Windows XP 5.1
IA32-xxxx-xxxx-
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
that was from a Nero 6 log, but 7 looks much like that. Underneath the divider is the operating system, and right below that is the begining of the serial number. When posting a log, just include the last burn log, and be sure to edit out your serial numbers by typing xxxx over them, or deleting them before posting to the forum.
I, or some other member will be able to point out any issues you may have going on in one of those logs. That is, if you have Nero. If not, i have run out of ideas..

@ronnies
Sounds like different drives will show burns speeds.
Here some more screen shots for you w/ one of my drives (pioneer). This is my case in doing backing up a movie either from my hard drive or reading the disc from another drive.
No disc in drive set to write to - here are the burn speeds listed:
Set burn speed to 12 - still no disc in drive:
Shrink/Nero asking for blank since none was in drive b/4 project started:
Burning at 12x one blank in drive - for this one I used a 8x Taiyo which can be overburned to 12X. If the disc did not support this support in my experience the burn speed is reduced to what is will support:
Now if you are reading and writing from the same drive - some drives will only list the burn speeds of the source disc. My Litey is one - the Pioneer will still list what the drives supports.
Are your rading and writing from separate drives or taking files from your hard drive to burn?

Hello Binky7: Yes I have two different burners and they show separate burn speeds. I believe if I put an 8X disc in either, they both will burn to only 8X. That's becuse the HP DVD740 is always set to "maximum", it also shows the lower speeds. the other will give me the choice of 4X to 8X or 16X depending on what speed capacity disc I insert. I will try this out as soon as I get some movies to backup.
The HP DVD740 is the one giving me all the problems... Thanks Ronnies
All of my movies DVD backups are done thru "DVD Shrink". Hope this clears things???
