hi guys,
i have just bought a psp for my sons bday and am wondering how i get round the whole buying new games, films and using it for internet.
we have a chipped ps2, a guy i know done that for us but he doesnt touch psp's.
can anyone explain the basics on how i get started etc? i read on here last night that you need to of purchased the right firmware psp? i looked at the box and it doesnt say what firmware it has?! i know i havent got a clue but this is all new to me. all i know is i have bought a white one with a value pack! your probably all gonna read this and think big yawn and say read past threads, and i have but they all seem to start off basic and then end up lost in psp jargon which i cant decipher!

yeh cheers guys am looking at the box now and the only letter on the sticker is the letter I? just called game where i got it and they said they didnt know from the sticker but they think the new psps are 2.6? ps what is a homebrew? cider in a barrel?! drinking games on a psp? have i bought a shite psp?

to see what firmware your psp is go all the way left to the psp's menu and then to system information.there it should say what fw youre psp is.hombrew is games,apps,programms,and emulators(f.e.nintendo64 emulator).with emulators u can play games from other consoles f.e. nintendo64,mame,sega.genesis,snes,gba e.t.c.there are programs like crazy paint e.t.c.

In relation to the psp homebrew is defined as games that are played on the psp but not published in anyway by sony. 2.6 isnt a shit version, however 1.5 psps have the advantage of playing back-ups. here is what you can do with your psp 2.6 : http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/300895

cheers sudds for the link but im baffled?! can you tell me this, as i understand it the eloader allows you to play games without going out and buying the games but in the ravenlife link you gave me it says that i will nneed to own the gta umd, so whats the point?
am i missing something or everything? cant i just have the thing chipped and buy moody discs?

Its an exploit mate, u can only run homebrew on versions 2.01->2.60 if u have a UMD of GTA:LCS.
Homebrew as in SNES, SEGA MEGADRIVE, NEO GEO, GAMEBOY, and so on.
U cant run moody PSP games on a 2.60.

ok now ive sussed ive bought the wrong psp for my simple psp mind!
what do you recommend? shall i return the psp and get one like the 1.5 or one thats easier for me? all i want to do is buy cheaper games?

Not at all mate! ;) I was the same a year an a half ago.
Ur not gonna find a 1.50 in the shops mate, only on e-bay and the like.
If u get ur hands on a 2.00, that is the only version that can be downgraded to 1.50.

well if u manage to get a 1.51 or 1.52 u can upgrade then downgrade but i think ur even less likely to get one of them then a 1.50 but on ebay i have seen 1.5s for not too much. or i dont know where abouts u r but near where i live (east london, UK) theres a couple shops that have 1.50s one even has a white 1.5 and theyre all around 170 which aint too bad

yeh i live in brighton lorry loads of shops about so im sure i can try an find one. just to clarify, can you not buy copy games for a psp? if not what psp do i need to buy to get games from where you guys get them whever that is?
sorry to sound like a total lemon but this gaming lark is all new to me, give me a glass table topped space invaders machine in a pub anyday!

Yesss...mate they where the days...:)
U cant buy copy games for PSP but u can download them from torrent sites and such, and they come in ISO format which is basicly just an image of the disc, u will need at least a 1gig memory card on which to put this ISO, as for links we cant give them out mate or the mods will go ape s**t! ;D

OK SO NOW IM GETTING THERE! CORRECT ME IF IM WRONG BUT AS I UNDERSTAND IT I CAN PUT ISO FILES ON MY 2.6 PSP, ALL I NEED IS A 1GB MEM CARD. THEN I CAN GO TO SUCH SITES AND DOWNLOAD. I JUST DONT UNDERSTAND IN LAYMAN TERMS WHAT THE ADVANTAGES/DIS OF OWNING A 1.5 0R 2.0 PSP?

No you cannot play PSP GAME Isos.
Yes you can play Super Nintendo, Nintendo, Sega Genesis, Commodore 64, and other Classic Games.
With a 1.5 PSP you can play back-ups of your PSP Games. And you have full access to homebrew gaming.
Homebrew are games and applications not released or furbished by Sony.

yeh, like mine, it's a 2.0 and i can play pang(doubt many people know what that is), snes-emu, and have a psp-reader. i could play the new 64 emu. but it would run poorly. the nes-emu runs fine tho.
