Hello
Firmware is software that is directly connected to a device. So what you are probally reading is people updating there firmware to read multi region DVD's. Do not worry about Firmware, in all honestly there is really no reason to update it, unless the company that made the device really made a mistake. The only case I am aware of was a loop hole in a router (hardware firewall) that allowed people full access to the computer (the reverse of a what a firewalls is ment for).
For backups I recommed DVDxCopy, not that expensive to buy and it does the job without any major trouble or computer experience. You should read some of the guides available on the www.afterdawn.com main page for more information.

Firmware updates allow you to burn at higher speeds also. Could enhance the overall operation of your burner.

You only need a ripper/unencrypter & burning prog for DVD-5

No in other words , DVD Shrink is not needed for this particlar project.

Use DVD Decrypter and select iso read to copy an .iso file to your hd. Then select iso write to write the file to your dvd.
