Am interested in what people who have used both Victor (Made in Japan)DVD-R as opposed to Taiyo-Yuden(Made in Japan)DVD-R Discs consider which is of a better standard ?
P.S.Other formats of these discs would be fine as well.

hi,

where are you located (country wise?) i haven't found that brand/manufacturer "Victor" over here in the U.S. as of yet, it's a personal "hobby" of mine to try as many diff. media brands/manufacturers as i can get my hands on just for fun and my own testing purposes, but i am unfamiliar with Victor. :)

could you also tell me the MID coding on that particular "VICTOR" disc? i might have used the manufacturer of said disc before, but just not under that particular name...

so far, very few companies that i've used live up to the quality of Taiyo Yudens (FOR ME AND ON MY SETUPS), TYs are STILL my personal favorite media of choice, in either formats :)

I should have checked via DVD-Identifier first.Victor is also known as Victor-JVC electronics. They turned out to be Taiyo-Yudens.Tygox2,I think it said, otherwise I'd have to run it again if that sounds wrong. Australia !

hehe, well, if they check out as TYG02, those are definitely Taiyo Yudens (you confirmed it by basically saying these were "MIJ"...to double check, you will find GG000xxx near the inner hub of the disc, xxx is the batch number, ALL genuine Taiyo Yuden discs bear this laser inscribed coding on their discs...it only varies from rated speed to speed and format to format) :) and you are basically comparing an identical product to each other with the only difference being aesthetic (Taiyo Yuden is THE MANUFACTURER, Victor-JVC is the "brand" ) :)

either way, howdy to ya down in Australia~ :)

the 8x rated JVC DVD-R MIJ are genuine Taiyo Yudens, i've used a few in jewel cases awhile back, but they are difficult to find here in the U.S. :) the MIT 8x DVD-R are Prodisc made, not as good IN MY OPINION as the TYs :)

unfortunately, the 8x DVD+R format for JVC is pure rubbish, so, i'd recommend you stay away from them

if you have the MIJ 8x DVD-R Victors, you will be just fine with those and you should be pleased with the Taiyo Yuden quality.

I own an LG 4040B 4x that burns all formats,Ram etc,except Blu=Ray etc.
The cover of some TDK M.I.JPN 4x -R,(armour plated discs?) That I bought, stated that some burners can be damaged by incompatible burners.Surely if my burner is rated at 4x,there should be no danger?
Alot of directions are quite often written by non-English speakers ,so how the hell are you supposed to know whether the discs
will damage the drive or not?
P.S.Will 8x Taiyo-Yudens pose any threat either? Never considered this with CD-Rs'

is your LG an OEM or retail? actually, to better assist you, is your current firmware either the A101 series or the A300 series? the only difference being either A100 or A300...

if it's the A100 series, here is your most current firmware:

A114 : http://www.logitec.co.jp/DRIVERS/DVD/D1210_03.EXE

if it's the A300 series, here is the most current for that drive:

A304 : http://us.lgservice.com/jsp/common/download.jsp?DOC_ID=KRSWL00001...).zip&FILE_GUBUN=B

i would imagine if you have the most up-to-date firmware that there should be no problem recognizing those 8x TYG02s, so, with that in mind, you should not worry too much about it "damaging your burner" (mind you, since you have a 4x rated drive, it will only burn @4x maximum on the 8x rated media, this is A-OK!)

Appreciate the quick reply!I updated it to A304 a fair while ago,So should have no worries. Thanks!
P.S. Sorry to keep asking but,my other drives are Lite-on(DVD,CD-R)& I've read how some drives can be flashed to faster burning speeds & even dual layer.Do you know if anything can be improved with the 4040b?

:)

i have never owned an LG drive, so unfortunately, i can't be of much help to ya~ :P

i do have a few Liteon drives though, but the performance enhancements you speak of are PROBABLY accomplished by "cross-flashing" to a different model number Liteon (assuming the drive you are cross-flashing has the SAME/COMPATIBLE internal components of the latter model) :)

which model Liteon drives do you have? i have an older SOHW-1633S and a more recent SOHW-1693S, but i am not familiar with the NEWEST Liteon drives at this point; for the most part, i've just kept up to date on the firmwares for those 2 drives from the GLOBAL (taiwanese) liteonit website, the U.S. Liteon site is like a revision behind in many of their models... :)

i like to keep up to date on the NEWEST firmwares available personally, even if they are not available in MY country, if that means getting a firmware from taiwan, china, japan, europe, north america, or whichever country, so be it~ :)

no worries on the TYG02s mate, you will NOT harm your burner using that media~
