Hi, I will probably be flamed TO DEATH for this post, however, I didn't find that this question was adressed in any of the stickies at the top of this page.

I am in fear of getting my Slim Ver. 13 PS2 modded. This is because, when I tried the tissue paper mod on my V12 and swap discs (the one where you basically stick random crap in the sensors that tell it that the disc tray is open), the PS2 ended up not reading games, or rarely, reading them and scratching them up.

However, as replacement for the previous PS2 I broke due to my stupidity, I picked up a V13 (I think) slimline. If I were to get this thing a "SubZero ICE", "Matrix Infinity", "Mythchip" (like my friend has), or an "NH9" (ewwww, infinity clones)...would this PS2's laser die? Would it scratch my discs? WOULD IT OVERHEAT?

I've heard that modded PS2s overheat very easily (especially slims, because they lack a fan)...is this true? If I were to pick up a Myth, NH9, Modbo, or a "Subzero ICE" (which I STILL know nothing about, perhaps it's a clone, or perhaps it's not), would the thing constantly overheat, kill my discs, and later, itself?

Thank you for your time

~Blair~

ok to start off .. dont do that stupid crap to your ps2, use the tools that come with swap magic ... thats what they are there for (2nd) - if you are going to get your ps2 modded i would tell you to get the DMS4 Pro (3rd) - the reason the laser died b/c of the v12 u had .. those versions have to have a laser fix if you do anything to the ps2 that isn't intended for it and sometimes it will die if you don't do anything to it ... its just the v12 laser that sucks nothing u did to it (4th) - Yes the slim ps2 will overheat b/c of no fan but there are fans that you can buy for them or if you have a little fan just put it in fron tof the ps2 on the right side where the 9 slots are to cool it down (5th) - back to the mod chip ... the thing about the cheap ones is .. you will regret not paying more for quality

hope this helps

Will "Constant Overheats" of my console eventually kill it?

Also, where can I buy these fans, besides the internet.

Also, from one modder, I heard that DMS chips damage the PS2, is this true?

After running my own ps2 for tens of thousands of hours with a DMS4 and installing several I've yet to see any damage occur. As far as fans go read this: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/343458 if that still leaves you wanting more, something suitable can be found at any good electronics store. Any overheating can cause damage, but it will probably survive a few.

depends on how much money you are willing to spend to have the very best. I have a V12 with DMS4 Pro chip and Summone Laser Fix. Never had a problem with it.
And i third the motion above. Do not do that rig job with the tape and tissue mod. That is for people who are just too cheap and lazy to do it the correct way. Either get a set of Swap Magic disc and tools needed for your version. Or get a modchip.
They do have small USB fans that you can use to get a little extra cooling into your PS2 vents. But a small house fan placed in front of it will do just as good if not better.

If you want the ultimate in modded slimlines then here is an idea:
1. Buy an IDE hard drive that is 160GB or over for about $80
2. send it to a REPUTABLE modding site like Teammodders
3. Have them put in a DMS4 Pro SE chip
4. Have them put your slimline and hard drive into a new HD Combo case

It will then look more like the older PS2, it will have an internal hard drive, the chip will play anything you want without any other discs needed, The chip can format the hard drive, load games to it and play games from it. It has a built in cheat device so you can play back ups with cheats with no need to buy AR Max or Gameshark, and the HD Combo case has 2 cooling fans instead of just one.
Plus the load time for games played from the hard drive will just blow your mind as they are much faster than from the DVD drive

Sorry for bumping this thread, but my SCPH # is actually 75001

Now I think it's a Ver 14. Is it?

Is there a better chip for a V14 than DMS4PRO.

Also, My friend has a chip called the SubZero Ice chip, is this an infinity clone? He also has what's called an "NH9". and he claims "I've had the thing on for 25 hours on end, and it's still not overheating!".

Also, do MI, DMS4, NH9, SZ-ICE, and MYTH automatically turn themselves off after the game boots? Also, will my ps2 feel more hot with a modchip installed than it would without?

Thanks
~Blair~

Personally, my experience with the DMS4 Pro has been so good that its hard to recommend anything else for any PS2. I'm not sure which of those chips turn off after booting. As far as the heat is concerned though, you're probably not going to notice any difference from the outside, if there is any.

Nice.

***BOUGHT***

Also, do these install the same way as other chips such as the Matrix Infinity? There's a little store near me which will solder any chip you bring in to them, for you. Will they need the directions on how to install the DMS?

They're all pretty close, I haven't gone over the fine details for each one, though they use same principals of operation. If the store has done many chips, they've probably done a DMS, but it couldn't hurt to ask beforehand. Also, congrats on the new chip, here's a link for something you'll need: http://www.teamtoxic.com.cn/ It also might be a good idea to look into a laser fix such as the SummOne fix for a slimline ps2; ten bucks worth of prevention for a soon to be much more valuable machine.

i agree 100%, great choice in chips. I have also had nothing but great luck with my DMS4 Pro in the V12 i have
I also suggest the laser fix, even though some people will tell you that after the V12 the problem was fixed, i would get it installed anyway. They cost $10 or less, which compared to the price of a laser which is $50 you can see my point, better fae then sorry.

I have never hear of the other chips you mentioned, so i can assure you they are some kind of cheap clone and your friend will soon be envoius of all the features you chip will have that his doesn't
Read the manual at the bottom of the page that Q4i just linked you to for the ToxicOS V0.41 and you will see all the things it can do and how to do them. You will need to download that flash and put it on a CD and run it in the PS2 after it is installed to flash the chip before you try playing any games. And also check the site a few times a year because they release flashes that will update your chip with new features and fixes (also something your friends chip most likely lacks)

You get what you pay for when it comes to a modchip. I do not know too many good chips that are under $45
Duo2 GT would be the closest, it is a good chip but lacks the upgardability that the better chips have.

1. what is toxic os
2. Will this chip force PAL video on my tv? My friend has some games from the UK that I wish to run on my PS2, will they still scroll like crazy, or does DMS have a feature similar to MI?

ToxicOS is a flash upgrade for the DMS4 Pro chip, essentially the firmware for the chip. It has the ability to force PAL mode as well as many other features that the manufacurer can't put on the chips for legal reasons.

May I switch back to DMS4's flash if I don't feel comfortable with the new flash, and vica versa?

OH YEAH, EDIT: There is a STORE near me that is selling "DMS4 lite" chips. Can I still have almost all of the features of the DMS4 Pro with Lite?

Also, IS THERE SUCH THING AS A DMS CLONE? Or am I completely safe from fakes, and can trust that my chip will be able to be flashed safely?

There is no functionality in the DMS firmware, at least none that you would find useful. The primary difference between the pro and lite is the HD support offered by the pro. If, in the future, you decide to start running games or homebrew off of a HD the pro will make it much easier. The pro also has an integrated cheat device like gameshark or action replay or codebreaker. The thing that I think is the neatest though is that it totally removes the need to enter Sony's browser screen, so you'll never see that again. Also, as far as I know there aren't any clones out there but it is still possible, just make sure you get from somewhere with a good rep.

spend the extra few dollars and get the Pro. The ToxicOS is just much better and has more features than the ToxicBIOS that the Lite runs off of.
http://www.teamtoxic.com.cn/
you can read up on both there. They also have read me (documentation) files on both at the bottom of the page that explain each feature and what it does in slightly more detail as some of it will look like greek to you at first. like when they say it has devolution mode and so on.
It has both Force NTSC and Force PAL modes and also a Y-Position fix to make sure it fits the screen correctly.

So, the DMS LITE cannot force PAL/NTSC? Also, it will NOT play burnt games, imports, and other such desired games, as well as PSX games?

The lite will force PAL/NTSC, and every chip will play burnt games, thats their primary purpose. It's the extra features that the Pro has that makes worthwhile.

So, we can conclude this annoyance of a topic I made (I'm sorry) with the following things:

1. Matrix Infinity cloners fail at life!
2. Team DMS rules!
3. No matter what Version slimline you have, you should get a laser fix (preferably SummOne's)
4. The DMS4's default software will allow the buyer to: Play PSX imports, bootlegs (not likely I will though, cause' that is against the law!), and Original American games as well as, PS2 imports, bootlegs (AGAIN, ILLEGAL!), original european games, and backups.
5. With default firmwire (not ToxicOS) I can enjoy all these features, however, with the Toxic OS, I can enjoy even more!
6. The default DMS4 Lite software will allow forced video signals (NTSC or PAL).
7. This modchip WILL NOT overheat my console more than usual (mine hasn't yet)
8. If you agree to all the statements above, you can feel free to but a great big, lucious LOCK! on this thread.

Also, one more thing:

My ps2 says SCPH-75001 on the back, is this a Ver 13 or 14?

1. Yes.
2. Hell yes.
3. Yes.
4. The default software usually only lives for about 5 seconds before it is replaced, so I'm not sure exactly what its capabilities are. I know it allows you to read a burned CD with the Toxic software on it though. For the most part it is pretty limited, and the Toxic software unlocks most of the features.
5. See 4.
6. Pretty sure that the default software won't do that, it's the Toxic software. See 4.
7. Yes.
8. I do agree.

You have a v14, see this for more info: http://www.mod-chip.com/en/ps2version.htm

A DVD burner to burn backups of games, most PS2 games are on DVD5, a few are on DVD9. PS1 games are CD's.

Sorry about the following language but... SHIT!

Modchip+Installation (DMS4 Lite+Install)=$149
DVD-Rs=$9 for a decent type of media
DVD Burner=$100-400
Overheat Protection=$10

Adding up to an agonizing total of: $260 OR $558

DAMN IT, PS2s ARE A FRIGGIN MONEYHOLE!

But you get what you pay for, and a DVD burner has more functionality than just for the PS2. The other option is to put the games on a HD from a computer, this will also save wear and tear on your laser. The computer will then only need a DVD-ROM to make backups unless you get the game images from somewhere else.
