Starting a PS2 game just takes me back to the browser screen. If I start up the PS2 w/ a game inserted, it will read the disk, but instead of showing the Playstation2 logo, it will show the browser screen. Selecting the PS2 game will make the screen go black for a few seconds, and then show the same screen again. This problem started yesterday after I opened up the PS2 to clean the laser (3rd time since getting it) to fix DRE issues. It was working fine until I put the cover back on, at which point I got the problem mentioned above. I took the cover back to off to see what was wrong, and the problem was somehow immediately fixed. It then worked without issue for about a day, then from literally out of *nowhere* my PS2 froze on a loading screen in SCIII. I rebooted, and the problem?s back, this time it doesn?t seem to go anywhere, and I?m clueless as to what?s going on! Any suggestions//ideas very much appreciated.

Information that might be relevant:
-The PS2 is unmodded, though I have been using SwapMagic 3.6 w/ a slidetool as of late.
-I can?t adjust the height on the laser lens because it is a v2 PS2 [The laser lens will reset//adjust its height without any input on my part], and it has been making clicking noises every once in a while (obviously the laser hitting the disc) but doesn?t seem to have any problems loading up the game. (Click, click, no DRE ??)
-I also relubricated the rods that the laser slides on because it had started making a strange noise I hadn?t heard before, but I seem to have fixed it.

Try adjusting the screw that's to the left of the laser. Not much though

ps3 with 20gb hard drive

xbox 360 premium edtion with vga/hd hook up to my dell 20.1 inch widescreen lcd.

White and black 1.5 psp's

I'll take this down WHEN micro$oft decides to stop being lazy and make the capcom fighting games backwards compatible with the 360 dammit!!!

Which screw do you mean? The safety screw that's on the laser unit, or a star screw somewhere on the left side of the drive? Which way should I try adjusting it? EDIT: The plot thickens... I fiddled around with that saftey screw, tightened all the other ones, and flipped it over, and looked at the bottom to see if there were any foreign objects and there weren't. Turned it back on. SCIII booted up fine, made it about halfway through the opening sequence before the screen went black and... nothing. Restarted, back to the starting gate. WHAT THE !%^@ IS GOING ON? EDIT AGAIN: I replicated what just happened. Turned it over, took the cover off, took a peek at the mobo, replaced cover, turned it right-side up. Worked for about a minute, then froze on a loading screen. Then I tried another game; PlayStation 2 logo then a black screen. And now, it's just taking me back to the browser screen like before. Help........ T.T

Additional information: Just now it started working again. I had put the case back on, no change in the problem. Then I had it in standby for a while (half an hour to hour maybe) and I went to try again. This time I booted up Armored Core: Nine Breaker, and it was working fine. Played it for a good 30 minutes, everything's looking good. Then I reboot and put in SwapMagic 3.6 DVD. Loads up without a hitch. Run my ZOE2 backup. It too appears to load without a hitch.... I sat back and watching the opening sequence, which froze towards the end. Now I am greatly concerned and restart once more, with SwapMagic ready. And...it loads!! Slide in ZOE2 backup, it loads too! And I play ZOE2, and all is merry, until about 10 minutes later, I'm playing a mission and it freezes. I restart, put in SwapMagic... takes me to the browser screen. Same with all my other games. So it seems I'm back to the starting gate, AGAIN. Is it possible my PS2 is possessed? Or that my boot disk/slidetool is someone pooching my PS2? I'm sure I'm doing everything right. *scratches head*

Try adjusting the laser gain like bluejet said, there are two square trimpots, one for the DVD and one for the CD laser, if you have a multimeter, you can read the resistance of the trimpot and then turn it to decrease the resistance slightly, do it in small increments, too much can fry the laser.

I'm positive I'm not getting a DRE. I've had DREs in the past and I've fixed them by cleaning off the laser lens. This seems to be a different problem entirely -- Quoting my original post: If I start up the PS2 w/ a game inserted, it will read the disk, but instead of showing the Playstation2 logo, it will show the browser screen. Selecting the PS2 game will make the screen go black for a few seconds, and then show the same screen again.

Plus the fact that it's more than once succeeded in booting up the games, only to *FREEZE* once I'm in game... I don't feel comfortable adjusting the laser pots when it seems to be doing the reading fine... I just want to know what in the hell is going on with my PS2.... >_>

Does it only do it with backups? What about CDs?

It happens with all my original games (which include Armored Core & Soul Calibur III), as well as as both swapmagic bootdisks. I don't have any original CD games to try out, but I can tell you the *exact* same problem occurs when I put the swapmagic CD loader in, which shows up as a blue disk in my browser.
