I wrote an email to Abacus. Here is the response.

Dear Customer,

As you have noted we have had an increase in price on the Epson Compatible Inkjet cartridges that we sell. There have been a few changes in the industry which has caused us concern.

1) The Seiko Epson Corporation has filed a lawsuit against 24 manufacturers and importers of compatible inkjet cartridges over patent infringement claims.
http://www.epson.co.jp/e/newsroom/2006/news_20060221_2.htm
2) Another lawsuit in which names 4 online retailers will cease to sell Epson compatible inkjet cartridges.
http://www.epson.co.jp/e/newsroom/2006/news_20060428_2.htm
3) Liquidation of version 1 Epson compatible cartridges.
4) We have not at this time heard of Epson suing the end user for the purchase of these cartridges.

The manufacturer that we use has invested heavily to develop a new version of Epson Compatible cartridges. We have made the choice to switch our inventory to these Patented Epson Compatible cartridges. Unfortunately at this time the cartridge costs are slightly higher.

There will be some cheaper cartridges available on the market for some time as some of the importers, and manufacturers liquidate their inventory.

At Abacus we still believe we offer the BEST PRICE, BEST PRODUCT and BEST SERVICE for our customers.

Regards,
Abacus 247

Sounds like those knock off ink cartridge makers are getting sued, and will be liquidating remainder of their stock. No more cheap ink from those manufacturers they listed. So I take it,we better stock up now.

I'll still get mine here:

http://supermediastore.com/epson-r200-ink-r300-inkjet-cartridge-c...

Scroll down, there's a 10% discount that brings the entire set of 6 cartridges to $11.88.
That's for the R200/220/300/320/and 340 printers.Maybe some other models as well?

Free shipping on over $45 order.

I checked out private.abacus the other week, and 3 sets of those cartridges use to be $55,now around $80+ bucks. Still cheaper buying 2 sets, than 1 set of walmart/staples/or any other store.

There should always be somebody with discount ink.Looks like epson nailed a few,but probably not all of them.

I received my R200 cartridges yesterday and everything looks good. I am not quite out of ink in my current set so I can't tell you anything about the quality but the brand is RiDisc.

I only use the printer for DVD backups so I'm probably not as critical as someone who prints photos. Two full sets (6x2) for $18.94 delivered with no stinking rebate is highly groovy.

Hey joeblow. My epson r-200 puts out amazing quality pictures. Not only my dvd case covers, but my regular pics.Even with the generic private.abacus ink cartridges and cheap staple's photo paper.I still have 1 full set remaing and the rest about half full. I don't do as many of those case covers like I was.

Did you try the shiny inkjet printable media yet? They look sweet.

That reminds me,I got pics of fish to print out!

I was hoping Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden would have silver hub printables by now but I may go ahead and get what they have now. I don't try to duplicate the look of the factory disc so it won't matter that much.

What brand(s) of silver printables do you like?

Silver inkjet printables: Taiyo yuden. These have to be ordered off the net.Even though I prefer to booktype the plus format, the dash format of these are almost half price, compared to the plus format. My last purchase, were the Ty-g02's.

Verbatim would be my next choice. For me,the cheaper of the 2 will suffice.

Whichever has the cheapest price between taiyo yuden and Verbatim, among these sites:

Rima.com
Supermediastore.com
Americal.com
Newegg.com
Meritline.com

Anyother brand name,I'll avoid like the plague.

Groovy. I take it they are both shiny. I feel like I stole my R200 ink cartridges! I cannot believe I got two full sets for ~$19!

I only print a copy of the DVD cover (downloading the jpg from Amazon), movie rating and running time on my backup discs so ink lasts me a lot longer than it used to! There's a lot of blank space so silver would be nicer looking.

SuperMediaStore has 100pk of the Silver -R for $37 (including $3 coupon expiring today) but they do not spring for shipping unless I buy 200. I've had no problems with -R so can't justify the online premium for +R.

SIX sets for $35.95 AND FREE shipping!!! These are the exact same cartridges from SMS.com...

Okay I no longer feel like I stole mine since I paid 50% more per set! :-)

That's pretty ridiculous. It would probably take me at least a year and a half to go through six sets since I only use the printer for DVD backups.

I would think that refilling cartridges would only be worth it for those who really print a lot if you can buy new cartridges for $1 each, delivered with no stinking rebate involved!

Who wants to go halfsies with me on them, LOL

Hell of a price. 6 sets would do me for 2 years, including my dad's usage.

I usually get 3 sets at a time. I don't know how long of shelf life they have.

This is only hearsay as I don't know 1st hand but I heard the ink sold by meritline wasn't very good and not as good as that sold by abacus. For $1.00 a cartridge it would definetly be worth trying though. I just got some cartridges made by the same company. It'll be interesting to see if it's any good. I got mine from sms.com.

Oops, I lied. My cartridges are made by G & G whoever they are. Hope they're not crap since I got 2 sets. Good review teflonmyk. I should have held out for the ridisc brand. I thought $27.00 with free shipping for 2 sets was the best price possible. Only time will tell if I got burned.
