Yup, newbie here again. Well, maybe semi-newbie. I've learned a lot from the forum and it's members over the past while and hope to learn a bit more here today. I've got a question that may likely be fairly elementary to many.

I downloaded and burned 4 movies to DVD just recently. Used Nero Vision Express. Nice program...one stop shop type of thing. Anyway, of the 4 movies I downloaded, 2 work great in my stand alone player but 2 of them didn't.

When I dropped the 2 bad DVDs into the player, the picture was rolling and a lot of static and snow appeared on the screen. Each disk was basically a coaster and unwatchable. I figured maybe I screwed up some how, so I dropped them into my computer's DVD just for the hell of it and found out that both worked just fine.

Aaaand the question is.....how come??? Both are AVI files. There doesn't appear to be anything different about them.

Off the top of my head, I recall Nero telling me that each had more PAL content than NTSC and asked if I wanted to burn it in the format which was more prevalent. I dunno if this is the problem or not.

I'm hoping some one more learned than me can lend a hand. The advice would be sincerely appreciated!

Regards,

Riz

The only thing I can think of is the media you burned them to. If you are not using top quality discs then sometimes you can experience problems with some of the discs due to the inconsistency in production of the discs. What brand are you using and your burn spees.

I don't believe that you downloaded movies which is illeagal and you want people here to help?

99% of all problems are between the computer and the chair.

@dialysis1, It is not your position to make that statement, if you think he/she has done something that breaches AD rules then you have to send an offensive post report.
I cannot see where he is breaking any laws as there are some legal download sites, if I thought he/she was breaking any AD rules then I would NOT have replied as I did.

May I suggest you also read forum rules.

pal and NTSC could be a problem you could try re burning the movies and see if you make the NTSC your region insted of PAL and if that does not work contact the site where you downloaded the movies and see if you can get your money back, or if you can download the movie again, good luck

@ rdmercer1:
Sorry but I dont think you understand , NTSC & PAL are nothing to do with region really.
It is more so about differing frame rates :-)

PAL = 25fps
NTSC = 23.xxfps or 29.xxfps

If you're in USA always be safe & encode to NTSC (as PAL is often not playable , comes out in black n' white or horizontal lines etc).
If in UK/Europe then all DVD players & TVs are pretty much backward compatible .. so doesn't really matter at all.

@ dialysis1:
That wasn't such a helpful comment from you , please refrain from jumping in feet first before you have any facts & as Gwen quite rightly stated .. if you are outraged by a post then there is always the 'report user' feature !

@ Riz :
It does sound as if you're unable to play PAL (only a guess mind) , if you have the original AVI files still I would recommend re encoding them but all in NTSC format .. whether it's the most prevelant or not ; )-

peace

Things to think about:

1.) Your region, is it PAL or NTSC.

2.) Your region settings on Your drives.

3.) Your standalone player, does it have the ability to play *Pal* version movies? Not all do. DVD standalone units that don't have the ability will display what you said in your quote.

Many thanks to all of you who offered advice! It is honestly appreciated. I will give the new burn a try.

Oh...and the site I used is called www.MovieFlix.com. It's a subscription service. I'm still learning but with all the legal rigamorole on the site, it seems to me to be legit.

Thanks again for all your help!

Regards,

Riz

riz513ca i looked on the web site where you got the movies and it states this (All media files on the MovieFlix Website are protected by copyright laws. You may not, under any circumstances, reproduce, record, publish, publicly exhibit, or distribute any media files (including, but not limited to, .ra, .ram, .rm, and .wmv files) made available for playback on the MovieFlix Website without MovieFlix's express written consent. You may not link directly to any .ram or .rm file located on a MovieFlix server, and you should not attempt to "pass-off" any of MovieFlix's content as your own work.you say in you other post (I'm still learning but with all the legal rigamorole on the site! this will help you ok! good luck
