I don't believe this is OT, but does give me some concerns. Because my pc's cpu is not fast enough to burn files converted to DVD's {dropped frames} I haven't really started to back my DVD's up.

I have read here at Afterdawn the importance of using high quality media for backing up ones movies, so this is possibly of importance.

I just recently {yesterday} purchased two new DVD's at Best Buy and noticed on the packaging this notice "This Disk Made in Mexico". The reason I noticed it was because when I picked up the new Yu-Gi-Oh Movie I than browsed other movies to see if there was any others I might be interested in buying. I spotted M:I-2 with a $9.99 price tag on it. It seem unusual that a fairly new release was selling for $5 dollars less than M:I-1 which was on sale for $14.99. As I looked over the packaging on the back was made in Mexico notice.

I immediatly looked on my Yu-Gi-Oh DVd and it also had that on the back. When I inquired of the Best Buy Employees the only responce I got was that all DVD's where going to be produced in Mexico now. When pushing as to why I was told they were doing it because of cheaper labor costs. I than ask if the movie industry was using an inferior lower quality disk as it made no sense that they would be producing all their DVD disks in Mexico on the basis of cheaper labor costs only. They couldn't give me an answer.

There were still new releases selling for the normal prices of $19.99 and up and I really didn't look at the backs of them for the Mexico notice, so I'm not sure where they were produced. I had assumed {though I could be wrong} that if a recently released movie like M:I-2 was selling for the marked price shouldn't the new releases also be selling for the same price.

My thoughts are that if they are using a lower quality disk, wouldn't they not hold up as well as the disks previously used which lasted for a longer period of time and wouldn't that affect the backing up of ones movies to a high quality disk media if ones original DVD was made on an inferior disk?

Any one have any thoughts on this or any knowledge as to the producing of the Movie Industries moving production to Mexico.

Thanks,

I wouldn't be concerned about your new dvd's being made in mexico. New store bought dvd's are pressed. They don't use dyes like recordable blank media.

Thanks Mort81.... Like I said, I just thought it strange that M:I-2 was so cheap. I've always paid $9.99 for the Yu-Gi-Oh DVD's and that price didn't come down due to cheaper labor costs, but to see a recently released DVD cheaper than the original M:I-1 surprised the Cr*p outta me.

Can one determine if a purchased DVD, can be determined as to manufacturer, like blank media can to access the quality of the disk?

i think the reason the M:I-2 was "on sale" is more of a store specific promotion, as M:I-III was just recently released, and bestbuy usually sells the prequels or earlier versions of the movies that just came out to theaters at a "special price" :)
(why M:I-1 was not same price, i have no idea)

as to the manufacturers of PRESSED dvds, i don't really know if there is a program available to "check MID codes/manufacturers" like with blank dvd media, if one is available, i'd be more than willing to try it out myself...i usually don't worry about pressed dvds that much despite where the country of origin may be, since there is no "dye formulation" on the pressed dvds, it would be much more difficult to determine which ones are "good" vs which ones are "bad" even if MID coding or manufacturers could be deduced by some program~ :) if i can't rip a PRESSED store-bought dvd with the slew of programs i currently use, i will usually just return it for a new copy, that's how I personally determine if it's "good or not" :)

The same scanning software used for checking recorded DVDs will work as well on DVD-ROM discs. Note that many of the discs will show error rates that EXCEED those of some well recorded discs. There is no such thing as a "perfect" disc--there might have been one or two for an hour or so until the errors began to appear. The big manufacturers of movie discs in the U.S. are Technicolor (2 plants), Deluxe (2 plants), Cinram (4 plants, including Canada), Sony (2 plants), and dozens of other, smaller operations. The major movie studios only deal with those mentioned above or sometimes Panasonic in California. Raw material costs for CD-R are about $0.065 and about $0.07 for DVD because of bonding material and the lower yield on molding two halves of the disc. Makes you wonder why a 4.7GB movie costs $14.99 and the audio-only soundtrack of half the good songs from that movie on a .6 GB CD costs $19.99. Who are the real music pirates?
