Hi chaps,

Wondering whether anyone can recommend a good, reliable DVD burner (possibly dual layer) to replace my DW U18-A Sony burner. I've read the Sony is not the most reliable burner, and reckon it must be behind the stuttering and occassional freezes that I'm experiencing.

Ripped files play back perfectly in winDvd. Also have the latest version of shrink, use good-quality Ridisc media. Have up to date Nero - and told it the disc is slightly smaller than it actually is having read that errors can often occur near the edges of discs/at the end of films. I've slowed down the burn rate and leave the computer to its own devices when burning. It must be the Sony burner right?

Have windows XP 2002, AMD 64 3200, dedicated serial ata drive for burning, 1g of ddr ram

I would suggest the NEC 3550, BenQ 1650/1655 or Plextor 716A.

Before you chuck your old drive, lets have a look at your Nero log and see if there are any clues to your problems there.

not a lot wrong with a SONY DVD RW DW-U18A (it is infact a rebadged LITE-ON )
use one myself , even have one in the cupboard if this one packs up

for D/L and 16x media i have a LITE-ON DVD RW SOHW-1693s can't fault it yet

as bilbo65 says media sounds more like it. Ridisc use varius suppliers for their media. so if you haven't got it already download DVDIdentifier from the link in my sig and post the ID

I had a sony but replace it with a benq 1620 and I use verbatim R+ 16x discs and I love it. I called Sony support but they were useless.

okay...im looking into getting a new burner i would need it to be abled to burn up to a x16 or x8 even...but DVD-R that is. i have a Nu-Tech burner now....not so good...burns to x4 and x2 media..i dont even think they sell x2 media ....any suggestions anyone?

I would suggest the BenQ 1650. I told my friend to get this(from newegg.com) and i installed it in her puter. It runs smooth and does it's job nicely! I wish i had that instead of my NEC 3550a now! (maily because of bitsetting, i know why now.)

I'll get on to a Nero log and ID for my media later on today and post them up....taking care of the little one at the moment...

Hope the discs are okay - made a rather large bulk purchase of them on a good recommendation!

Hi gurnard,

From your sig and the Nero file I've just posted I think you might soon be blaming my discs - they're made by CMC! Here's the DVD ID file for further proof.

Had heard very good things about Ritek discs, and thought the dye on the Ridisc ones I bought was identical. Ho hum!

yep! noticed from the log, i'm surprised the drive did'nt go "blah...spit" don't like these lol

the only RITEK to use are their own brand ie. RITEK....RIDATA AND TRAXDATA. don't trust any other Ritek under any other brand name ie Ridisc...Arita etc . even if the dye is purple.

you'll get good burns at the speed your doing with cmc but max 4x
the problem is a few weeks/months time, some times even the next day who knows

I agree with gurnard, ditch your discs and your problems may go away. Sony drives really aren't that bad as most are really rebadged lite-on's and BenQ's, both make excellent drives.

You also need to remove your serial number from your last log, it begins with 1A23 and delete all the logs above it...one is enough. LOL

You are attempting to burn too close to the edge of the disc, reset your target size in DVD Shrink or Recode (whichever you use) to 4300.

Thanks very much for your advice LOCOENG and gurnard.

I'll dig a little deeper into my pockets and try some other discs - verbatim probably.

I'll also make those other adjustments too - interesting that a slow burn speed can be less reliable.

I'll post results back here when I've had a go for future reference...

I'd personally go with the 1650, but for a few dollars more you can get the 1655 and have lightscribe abilities if you ever want to try out that feature.

Lightscribe is a special disc that uses the burners laser to burn a greyscale image onto the disc, no printers necessary.

I have personally really enjoyed my NEC 3550 and my older TDK 440N. As far as media goes I really like KHypermedia DVD-R . I have used them for a few years and have probably only burned 5-10 coasters. Most of those were the results of shipping scratches from the top of the spindle dvds.
