I have some home videos I burned to DVD and I wanted to know if it was possible to put those DVDs onto my computer so I can mix them and edit them. It's a little project I have for a family reunion deal.

These movies are all pretty big, proabably near the same size you would get on a film on a DVD that was compacted and burned to another DVD.

Any tips on how to do this?

And what editing program would be the best for this? I want to use my own sound, etc.

What I would do:

Rip the DVD to my hard drive.
Mix and edit with Mpeg Video Wizard DVD (the newest version support export to DVD). There is a 30 day free trial.

Burn completed project to DVD.

I know it's been a long time since I posted but I'm still trying to do this...

When I rip the DVD to my computer I have a bunch of files and I'm not sure exactly what to use to play them.

I used Clone DVD for this process and it created two folders... AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS. The audio folder is blank whereas the Video folder has about eight files. None looks like it is something I could click on to play or anything.

What do I do about that, exactly? I want to convert whatever is on my computer to a playable file like an .mpeg or something but I have NO idea how to do it.

Anyone familiar with what I am doing have an idea how I can turn these files into something playable?

Thanks...

Within the VIDEO_TS folder, there are VOB files. These are the movie. You can click on them and they will play with Media Player (if you don't have a DVD player installed).

To convert them to another format you need a conversion program. I alread suggested one but there are many, many others. Just do a "Google" or look on AfterDawn software pages.

Wow, you're right! I would have never guessed a .VOB could play in Windows Media Player, lol...

Another question... All of the .VOB's seem to be able to play the movie, and they're all different sizes. When converting the movie do I need to convert them all or just one to a .MPEG? I guess what is the "main" file for conversion. Before I thought they all worked together to complete the movie.

Also can MPEG Video Wizard actually convert the .VOB files to .MPEG for me? I downloaded it and am looking at it briefly but I'm about to go to work.

And do you perhaps know if there is a tutorial on this site or around somewhere that will explain some of the features, especially conversion? I know it's not your job and if you can't find one I'll look when I get back. I just thought it would be nice to ask for later if you knew off the top of your head, lol.

Thanks for the help!

Yes, it will convert from VOB to mpeg. Just click the red button on the lower right corner. Mpeg is the default save method.
