i bought some verbatim 8x last month from buy.com. i used it right after i got it but my laptop just wounld recongize the disc when i inserted. so i take a look at my princo DVD-R and it is a 4x. i don't know why the prinoc disc work fine. i can tell this because you know how you get a window message say what you want to do with this blank cd like burn in with this or that. the princo disc cause this kind of pop up but not the verbatim 8x i bought. i even try to force to burn a ps2 back up but it wounldn't even play in my ps2.???
so i want to try verbatim 4x

Sounds like a firmware issue. Usually the case for older drives, and the newer 8x and 16x media that is coming out.

Those Best buy verbatim digital movie quality should do the trick. You may want to stock up on them for future use in your dvd-rw drive.Still a very steep price for them.

What's the brand name and model# of the dvd-rw drive?

What's the firmware version of it?

Device manager and nero infotool will tell you that info.

I have the same issues with firmware myself. This site is great for getting the latest firmware for your drive. http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_all.php#O If a drive is really old it may be cheaper the long just to buy a new one than looking for 4x discs.

You'll basically open up the zip file and load it like a normal program.

Several things to watch:

Make sure no disc is inserted in that drive.
Make sure no thunderstorms in the vicinity for a possility of a power outage.

Follow directions to the final T.Do not abort during this updating process.

Some older drives latest fw may still not be able to burn the newer media. This is a signal from the manufacturers that it's time to buy a newer burner, because they're not putting any more money into their older drives.

I know you said that you are looking for the Vernatim 4 X DVD-R , But I have seen some of the Movie Reel verabtims 4 X DVD+R's at my local biglots stores ! They were a tad expensive @ $3.00 for 3 disc ! They were the ones that have Eurostyle Clear plastic case/ Super jewelbox ! I can't promise you'll find them here either but Walmarts used to sell them so if you look really hard you might find some old stock of these in one or more Walmarts ! But in the long run as saugmon said it may be cheaper and more beneficial for you to just invest in a new drive ! nicz888 good luck in your endeavors in any case & Happy BURNING!!!

nicz888- was in a Big Lots store yesterday & they did have the DVD-R 4X Verbatims ( Movie reel) but they were still a little pricey for me $3.00 for a 3pk. but if you only have a small project then maybe you would'nt mind the high price? Good luck !
