Well i finally switched from -r to +r. Not only did both my dvd players read them flawlessly, (thanks to booktyping), but they loaded even faster than my -r discs did. Im happy!! I also bought some +dl's from newegg and got them in the mail today. I hope they burn just as good, (im going to use tmpg dvd author for those.)

Anyway i have a pic to share and would like to thank everyone assisting me with changing to +r, booktyping, burning, authoring, and everything else. A lot of educated people on here, and a big thanks to all.

Congrats on the success story limelight.Welcome to the world of booktyping.

What's the brand name and model# of your burner?

My benqs are very fond of those MCC-004 verbatim +16x. They scan better when burned at least 8x-for me personally.

Unfortunantly,I still have to pow around with the dash format. Due to the higher prices of plus format shiny inkjet printable media.

You've the best DL media in the world sitting there as well!

Saugmon is right on! I like the MCC media..... although I strickly use Taiyo Yuden shiny injet printables and the white hub printables... I'm ready to try the Verbatim printables! How are they compared to the Taiyo Yuden printables? do they give you a better picture than the white hub printables of Taiyo Yuden?

@saugmon

I just bought a new burner model SHM-165H6S (lite-on). It burns everything, even Lightscribe discs which i havent tried yet. It was time to upgrade from my old liteon 4x burner :)

Nothing against TY's, thats what i used before (the -r 4x version) and they were fine, but as soon as i bought this 100pack of 8x premium discs i started to have playback issues. I thought this would be a good time to switch to +R.

One thing i did notice though and from what ive read here on the forums is that verbatim's made in singapore are the best, right? thats what the DL's are, but the plain ol' +R's are made in Taiwan. Dont know if that makes a diff, the media codes come out to be verbs so i shouldnt be worried (right?) :)

One more thing i forgot to add:

The new 8x ty's i bought would only burn at 6x when set to 8x.
The 16x verbs burn at 8.2x when i set it to 8x.

I suppose i shouldnt burn the verbs at 16x or it will probably burn at a lowe speed too, like 10x, if the math makes sense?

read all about Booktyping:
http://k-probe.com/bitsetting-booktype-faq.php

and the 8x DVD+R Taiyo Yudens can be overburned up to 16x, although I only burn those babies at 8x and they come out perfect!

also the Made In Taiwan Verbatims are probobly better than the Sinapore ones!

Love those 16x Verbs and so do my Plex's. Am also having good luck with the 16x Fuji's, I know they are not that well thought of but they are burning really great and no coasters or playback issues. Bought them because I was tired of burning the grankiddy movies on the good stuff, but so far they are working out well.

Ihoe: I haven't tried ty white inkjet printable media. Only Verbatim and maxell. Both identical. You can't tell one from the other. Have a dull finish. Dark covers turn out sweet, but the lighter ones don't look very good.

I use the ty-g02 shiny inkjet printables for the lighter covers. The quality of them looks a lot better than the white. If I could find some quality glossy full hub white inkjets,I'd bet my covers would look a heck of a lot better.

To add to what Saugmon said:

The Verb and Maxell surfaces are basically identical. The TY finish is just a tad "rougher" than those two. However, after a shot of Patricia Nomick's, you can't tell the difference. Verb has photo quality white inkjet printables also, but, they don't come in hub printable (to my knowledge anyway). I use 90% TY, 5% Verb, and 5% Maxell (MIJ); all white inkjet printable exclusively... I can't remember the last time I handled a shiny silver disc... LOL If they ever make the silver inkjet printables in hub printable, then I will give them a shot!!!

I'd love to find some quality full hub shiny inkjet printables. Same goes for quality glossy/semi-gloss full hub white inkjet printables.
There's some glossy prodiscs/infodisc? or something similar in that lower quality media spectrum.

limelight- My understaning is that Verbatim atleast of late and possibly for sometime is only making their DVD+R DL media only in Singapore ! And as it regarded as " The Best DL Media" comparing it to their Taiwan Made SL - Media is kind of fruitless ! Both are Excellent media and you could'nt go wrong with either ! You're right as rain ! as long as they're genuine Verbatims it's a win win situation either waY Good Luck and Have a day !!!!!

Thats what I am saying Movies 27..

I have burned only DVD-R's and not one burned in my Emerson Set top or in my DVD burner have yet to not play in any dvd player. I think booktyping is for those dvd players that are older than 6 yrs old and I do not know one person who owns one that old.

yea but a DVD-R should play fine in one that old too because it was the first format to come out then came DVD+R.

movies27- If your happy with DVD-R there's nothing wrong with it ! In fact it's even Cheaper atleast at online retailers . Booktyping is like having an Ace in the hole ! Something extra you can draw from when you need it ! Like for example making disc for an older dvd player that like Morris the cat is finicky about it's diet ! Many new players from say the last 2 years or so will play anything short of a DEEP Dish Pizza! so that may or may not be a problem ! Also If we're talking straight up not booktyped media then DVD-R has a slightly better edge in compatibility versus DVD+R !With booktyping the pendulum swings back to the direction of DVD+R! Booktyped disc are the most compatible ! If your drive plays dvd-rom's DVD's /Games Then they should play booktyped disc just as well ! Also Burners Like the Benq's, Plextors ect... That feature Booktyping often have other helpful features as well Like Qsuite on the Benq's & Plextools on the Plextors ! And in the end burners that have booktyping capability are about the same price as non booktyping burners so it could'nt hurt ! So if you like a burner that has it but don't need or want to use that feature you can always turn it off ! In either case movies27 buddy use what you like and what works for you ! If your happy with the results that's all that really matters ! Enjoy & happy Burning!

limelight,

Congrats on your new burner and purchase of excellent media. Just got that same drive rescently myself. Both the verbatim DL media and SL media are the best of the best. Nothing can compare with verbatim DL media and the only medias that compare to verbatim SL (mitsubishi chemical co.) media is taiyo yuden and hitachi maxell. Lightscribe feature works well too.

movies27 and GregRod,

Dvd+r's booktyped dvd-rom is still the most compatable format with set top dvd players. Your dvd-r's may play fine in all your dvd players but if you start passing your backups around to other people with a large variety of set top dvd players, dvd+r's booktyped dvd-rom will play in more of them than the dvd-r's will. If dvd-r's work good for you, then no worries keep using them. I like many other members pass my backups around to family and friends and therefore use only dvd+r's booktyped dvd-rom to assure the best compatability. There are no complaints as there were when I was using dvd-r's (ritek G04's).

Thanks for the positive input everyone, its good to be loved.:)

1st DL project- 10 seasons of Friends, for the wife. Ive figured it out to 2 DL discs per season.

I've asked this in another topic, but the answers vary:
--What is the filesize that a DL disc should be burned at?

A DL dvd will hold 8152 mb so I would go no more than 8050.
