you should get a set of instructions when you buy the router.
That will show you the set up.
I suggest a Linksys (wireless if you can afford it) router with speedbooster technology. I have had one for a while now and it has worked great and also works fine with networking my Xbox which will be generally the same as the PS2
But there are several different ways to set up a network and what will work for you depends on your ISP provided, if you have one or two NIC cards in your PC and some other factors.
Basically the way i did mine was to set up a new network connection for you game system with the Network Setup Wizard in Windows.
Some people use a Staic IP, others a DHCP connection. DHCP gets the information automatically and Static you tell it what IP address to use. The new connection should have an IP address like
192.168.1.100, subnet mask 255.255.255.0
and you may not have to worry about the DNS, at least you don't with the Xbox
With that setting you would enter the IP address for the PS2 as
192.168.1.101 (or 102,103,104) just something in the same range. You would also enter the same subnet mask as above.
if you have the connection set up right, and the IP addresses in the same range you should be able to have the PC and PS2 communicating.
On some PC's you also may have to set your connection for "network sharing" which basically tells the PC that other devices like a PS2 or laptop are going to be sharing the connection. that way you can work on the PC online and the Xbox online at the same time if needed.
ths is probably confusing the heck out of you but network set up varies from system to system and not everyone can set them up exactly the same way.
I read many tutorial about setting up my Xbox, but in the end i had to use a slightly different set up on mine because none of the tutorials worked for me.
