V220 - outer display freezes intermittently

I've had my V220 almost a year now, with largely no problems. Within the past week the outer display has occasionally "frozen" - it remains unchanged, e.g. the time doesn't update, it doesn't change if I open the lid, etc. If I turn it off then on again the outer screen just remains blank. All other functionality is fine.

After a while it seems to just start working again. One time I hit it (since that's always the best thing to do to complex electronics!), one time it recovered after I put it on charge.

Any ideas what's wrong -- and more importantly how to fix it? Couldn't find any other cases of this happening. My guess is a physical problem since it's intermittent, but I can't imagine how it happened.
