Hi Everyone,

I really don't know what I need. I was about to buy DVD Wizard Pro and had a bad feeling. Thank god I found this website. Seems like DVD Wizard Pro was going to be a rip off.

Anyways, I need to find out what I need. I have a DVD of my daughter's recital made by a friend, who I can't contact anymore. What I'm getting from reading all this info - correct me if I'm wrong - I need to rip this DVD to my hard drive, so I can control/edit the acts I want (?). Then after that I would like to create my own CD with only the acts I want. Maybe even put it on my Video Ipod.

What freeware should I use to rip the DVD and edit the outcome?

Hello batntab. Welcome.

I would use either NeroVision or TMPGEnc Author for the editing. Both have free trials, although the TMPGEnc Author 2 is less than fully functioning. TMPGEnc Author 1.6 is fully functional. I like TMPG better myself. It's faster than NeroVision. NeroVision is part of the Nero suite of programs.

http://tmpgenc.pegasys-inc.com/en/download/tda16.html

You shouldn't have to rip the video to your HDD first to use either program. Either will extract the video directly from the DVD although it's faster if the data is already on the HDD.

If you want to rip, I'd use DVD Decrypter. There's a link to the software in my signature.

Guides:

http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/advanced_tmpgenc_dvd_auth...
http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/mpg/tmpg-dvdauthor.htm

The link to the BBMayo guides includes guides for NeroVision as well as basic guides for backing up DVDs.

http://home.comcast.net/~bbmayo/guides.htm

You mentioned putting the edited video on a CD. Did you mean DVD or actually CD?

Here's a guide for Nerovision and VCDs. It's the same principle for DVDs, except you choose a DVD project instead of a CD project.

http://www.geocities.com/omegaweaponvcd/vcd_guide.htm

As for transfering video to Ipods, there are commercial programs and free programs. There are some guides on the Afterdawn Guides page which you can get to by clicking the Guides tab at the top of this page.

Thanks Laddyboy for the info...

So, ripping the DVD is the first step? I thought I was supposed to use DVD Shrink and then DVD Decrypter. What's the difference? Also, I have a copy Easy Creator s/w - by Roxio...will this do the same as Nero/Tmpgnc?

I don't use Roxio stuff. Bad past experiences. :) Seriously, TMPGEnc Author is the way to go for editing. It's the only one I ever use nowadays. It's very fast compared to some of the others. Nerovision can be exceptionally slow. If you want to keep the original menus and just get rid of some stuff, DVD Remake might work as well. I don't know how the original DVD is structured so it's kind of hard to tell what would be the best way to go. If you don't mind creating your own simple menus then both Nerovision and TMPG both have that capability. TMPG Author 1.6 only has simple menu making capabilities but that's what I'm usually looking for. The 2.0 version has more elaborate menu capabilities but that trial version has crippled menu making and doesn't allow saving projects. That's why I suggested using TMPGEnc Author 1.6 instead.

DVD Decrypter will decrypt the CSS copy protection on commercial DVDs while ripping a DVD's image or file structure to your HDD. It can also burn a DVD disk image stored on your HDD. DVD Shrink can also decrypt the CSS copy protection on commercial DVDs while copying a DVD's contents to your HDD. It can also at the same time compress the DVD data to decrease the file size. Compression is a bit of a misnomer in that Shrink actually eliminates some data in reducing the file size. DVD Shrink does not itself burn DVD files or images, but instead can interface with either DVD Decrypter or the Nero Burning ROM to do the burning.

So both DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink can be used for ripping. Since I don't think your DVD is copy protected, either should work. However, it is also possible that there are some small violations of the rules of DVD structure on that DVD and if that's the case, DVD Shrink will likely choke on it. DVD Decrypter is a little more robust most of the time.

I would probably not rip but just feed the actual DVD to the authoring/editing program. TMPG Author will ask if you want it to copy to the HDD and you can tell it yes at that point. It needs the video on the HDD to speed up the editing process.

This will be a trial and error thing for you to see what works best for you given what you want to do.

You might want to make a backup copy of the full DVD just in case. You just never know. :)

It's also possible that the original author organized all of the major acts into titles. If that's the case, you could use DVD Shrink in Reauthor mode to keep only those titles you actually want. There's lots of possibilities depending on how the DVD is actally structured. Unfortunately I have no way of knowing what the actual structure is.

The first thing I would do is use DVD Shrink to open the DVD and see how the DVD is organized. There is a preview pane. Just click on a title and then the play arrow for the player to play the title. If you want to just keep some of the titles and not others, then you can use Shrink to do just that. If you want to edit out stuff contained within a title, then you'll need TMPGEnc Author or another authoring/editing program.

I would also get some +RW DVD media for experimentation. It is sometime necessary to have stuff in DVD form when moving from program to program. It's also useful for testing a compilation to see if it's what you actually want before doing a burn to +R or -R media.

Good luck.

Well I downloaded DVD Shrink. Everything went fine until 72% way through, a message pops up "DVD shrink encountered an error and can not continue. Data Error (Cyclic Redunancy Check)". I tried the second time and same thing. Help! Any ideas?

Could be a slight defect in the disk or a bad original burn. Any scratches on the disk? Any fingerprints? Wipe the disk from the inside to outside with a soft cloth. I use eyeglass lens cleaning solution and a soft cloth for cleaning eyeglasses.

If Shrink fails again after doing this then go to DVD Decrypter.

Try using DVD Decrypter to rip it to your HDD:

1. start DVD Decrypter.
2. go to the mode menu and select ISO read.
3. click the DVD icon to start the rip.

If that works, startup DVD Shrink:

1. Under the file menu select open disk image
2. select the name of the ISO file you ripped with DVD Decrypter.
3. Shrink should then analyze.

Hi Laddyboy,

I was trying to get back on www.afterdawn.com and it wouldn't go through. It took me until now to get through.

Anyways, I downloaded DVD Decrypter and it came down with AnyDVD, is this the right software. It seems like after I downloaded AnyDVD, I wasn't able to log on to this site. Any ideas?

If AnyDVD is the correct s/w, what I'm supposed to do? It doesn't have the option you wrote down.

Anydvd is software that runs in the backround to help DVD Shrink or DVD Decrypter overcome any copy protection on the disks and allow you to create/make your backup.

Since you have the software (which should have nothing to do with your difficulty being able to get back to afterdawn), install AnyDVD and reboot the PC as instructed. Once installed you'll see a red fox in the lower right of the task bar indicating that its running, run DVD Shrink and use it as you normally would to create a backup. If the CRC error was due to copy protection, having AnyDVD running should take care of it (if the disk is clean, not badly scratched, or you have a bad press), If you're still getting a CRC error, try using the ripping tool that comes with AnyDVD, you can access it by right clicking on the red fox in the task bar, rip the files from the DVD to your hard drive then open the files with DVD Shrink and process them as usual.

If you're still having a problem with ripping the DVD files to your hard drive, return the disk and exchange it for another, there may be something wrong with it.

Cheers:)

Use Anydvd and believe

Thanks again, Laddyboy & Johnl123...You've been so helpful...

I have AnyDVD & DVD Shrink installed on my PC. DVD Shrink finally backed up my DVD to my HD. I also have TMPGEnc installed to edit/cut this video into sections I want. Don't know how to use it. It ask for project but I don't know what to choose (the DVD was backed up to my HD as Video_TS). Is there a guide on how to use this s/w?

I'd try either cucusoft or xilisoft. I think both have free trials before buying (I think video length is limited to 5 minutes in the free trial)

Handbrake (free) is available for the Mac people but I don't think they've released a WinXP version yet but are working on one.

It can be done with iTunes as well as long as you have your video in Quicktime (MOV) format. Here's a guide for that.

http://www.engadget.com/2005/10/14/how-to-convert-a-dvd-for-your-...

I think DVD Copy 4 Platinum will do this and has a fully functioning free trial.

http://www.intervideo.com/jsp/InterVideoDVDCopy_Profile.jsp

If you think you may be transfering video in the future, it'll be easier to just buy one of the commercial programs. It becomes more of a one click process with the commercial programs.

When you mean commercial program do you mean cucusoft or xilisoft? Which one do you prefer?

Try the free trial versions of both and see which one you prefer. DVD Copy 4 Platinum also has a fully functioning free trial. It does all kinds of conversions. Some of the iPod programs are dedicated just to the iPod. I'd try 'em all and pick the one I liked the best for the $.

Hi Again...

Sorry...I'm just not very knowledgable with this. In TMPGEnc Author, was there something else I was supposed to do after the output to the HD? It created a .tba file. I deleted chapters on the right pane, was this the correct way to do this?

The reason why I ask is because when I used Xilisoft DVD to ipod converter, it's not doing anything when I press the red button. I openned the ISO file (Video_TS)and nothing happens...Any ideas?

Are there any files in the Video_TS folder generated by TMPG Author?

You might want to open the VIDEO_TS folder with DVD Shrink and then burn that to a disk and play it to see if that's the output you want for the finished product.
