It used to work fine, i burnt 4 dvds yesterday and it was fine! I had no idea what hell happened, it worked fine and now it just stopped.

Hi TAshkar18.

What's the brand and model of your burner? Do you know the firmware version? It's the 3 or 4 letter number/letter combo after the name of your burner as listed in the DVD Decrypter righthand window. I think it's also included in the burn log.

What is the brand, type (+R-R), and rated speed of the media you're using? If you don't know the media code for the media from DVD Decrypter, you can download DVD Identifier and it'll provide the media code (actual manufacturer).

http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com

At what speed were you attempting to burn?

Were you burning with DVD Decrypter via DVD Shrink or outputing files or an ISO from Shrink and then firing up DVD Decrypter yourself for the burn?

The Memorex media is usually of poor quality. Also when you attempt burns at max speed, you increase the chances for failure when using poor quality media and non up to date burner firmware. A good rule of thumb is to burn at no more than 1/2 the rated speed of the media. Good quality media are Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden, and Made in Japan labeled Sony and Fuji media.

It would be helpful if you could fire up DVD Decrypter put a blank disk in the drive and read the info in the righthand window. What is the exact name of the DVD burner followed by the 3 or 4 letter/number firmware version? This is the info on the top line of the right hand Decrypter window.

Farther below is a line item "Disk ID:" What is listed on that line?

The Memorex branded CMC Mag media you have is among the worst manufactured which is part of the problem. You cannot burn this at max speed without running into a lot of problems and failures. I wouldn't even try to burn this at more than 4X even with an internal burner.

I have no idea whether your firmware is up to date or not. Is this a BTC/Empress burner and don't they use a liveupdate program or something like that? It isn't listed in the firmware database I use as a reference. I think the newest firmware might be A090 though. If you have the liveupdate utility software that came with your burner, use it to upgrade your firmware to the newest version available.

Slow your burning speed down to 4X and see if that solves the problem. Also in the future use Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden, or Made in Japan labeled Sony or Fuji media. Also it's never a good idea to burn at max speed unless you're doing it on a lark, since the chances of a failed or lower quality burn are pretty high even with good media. Stick to a speed no more than 1/2 the rated speed of the media for media rated at 8X and above.

thanks, i'm burning something now, we'll see if it works

another thing, why is it doing that now, i mean it worked 4 times but now it just stopped.

thanks

EDIT: Right Now, i set it to 6x instead of max which would go upto like 16x sometimes. While it was "writing LeadIn" it gave the error!

here is a screenshot:

thanks

The power calibration area of the DVD is where the burner practices burning to see if it is possible to do so before beginning the actual burn. In this case it used up all its area before it could successfully complete its burning test. Bad media and bad hardware are the two likely causes. Given the CMC Mag junk media, it may be that. Get some other better media and see if you can get consistent good burns from that.

As for your model, I have no idea. I assumed it was a BTC DVDRW USB 16X (BTC 1016 external burner). Is it not? I thought the live update thing took care of all of that for you.

weird, so after the 5 dvds taht didn't work, i put in another one and it worked.

this is messed up, if only 10 of dvds work then there goes 20 bux!!

this is pissing me off, i thought memorex was a good company,

so i'll look for Sony DVD's next time, how much do they usually cost for a 50 pack

thanks

With bad media, one can burn halfway through a stack of 100 without any problems and then encounter failure after failure. One of the reasons the media is poor is because it isn't subject to rigid quality control like the better media. The only way to know for sure, if it is the media causing all the problems, is to get some good media and see if the problem disappears.

Good media costs the same as bad on sale! I buy Verbatim for $15 or less per stack of 50 regularly on sale. Sony is priced the same when on sale. On sale most media costs the same. I buy Verbatim because it's easier to find where I live and there is little MIJ labeled Sony or Fuji around.

Emprex and BTC are the same thing as far as I can tell. Don't you just go to http://www.drvupdate.com and doesn't it automatically ID your burner and provide you the latest firmware available. I looked on the Empress site and only found the A089 firmware for your burner. There may be no other. I would guess you might be able to use the latest BTC 1016 firmware for the burner. But I'm not 100% sure. For the time being just get some good media and try that and see if you start to get consistent burns.

You have an external burner connected with USB so you are not going to get max speed burns no matter what you do. I seldom burn in excess of 4X on my external burner. A 4X burn takes 14 minutes, a 6X burn takes 10-12 minutes, an 8X burn takes 8-10 minutes, and a 16X burn takes 6 to 8 minutes. You don't gain a lot by getting into a big hurry, so keep the burn speed down.

thanks!!

yea i go to drvupdate.com

I dont mind waiting a little bit more, but the memorox really sucks big time.

another question,

I convert my .AVI's to dvd with convertxtodvd then i make a back up with shrink and then burn to decrypter.

after converting it, i tried burning it with convertxtodvd which didn't need a .ISO from shrink, but the first burn i did, i put it in my dvd player and it said this disc isn't a DVD or something. I think that might be cuz of the memorex discs, but just to be safe, which would you rather do?

and do you know any other burning software that burns without an ISO besides Convertxtodvd and Nero.

thanks

I have no idea what burn engine ConvertX uses. Thus I would generate an ISO and burn that with DVD Decrypter or Imgburn if I had trouble with it. You are correct in that the problem with the DVD player could be related to the media. There are tons of other conversion programs that burn as well. DVD Shrink will control the burn for a folder of video files, i.e., a VIDEO_TS folder, using either DVD Decrypter or Nero.

All of the following are AVI to DVD programs in wide use:
