I have successfully upgraded to v2.0 and then down to v1.5. Followed the guide on installing NesterJ and Kxploit including downloading games. But
can't get any games to load. Tried about 5 different ones but screen stayed blank. I think I must be missing a guide somewhere or doing something wrong ??

all emus work the same way. Since u r using 1.5 fw, there should be 2 folders for each emulator, one with a % and one with out. Put these two folders in ur Game folder (located in the PSP folder) and put all ur roms into the folder without the % follow this procedure with all the homebrew apps, and u shouldnt have any problems:)

Yes done that. My folders are NES and NES%. I have the apps in the NES folder. What I am doing is simply copying the whole game folder after I download directly into the NES folder. Should I be changing , deleting , editing anything after I download but before I put the app in the NES folder. I can see the apps file names on the PSP screen but when I try to load the screen just stays black or for one game it waits then shuts the PSP down. Reading posts on the forum I can see that some people recommend having a UMD in , others recommend editing files so troubleshooting can be hard. To eliminate the corrupt file explanation I downloaded different games from different sites but still have the black screen. Maybe I should try a different emulator ?

what do u mean by copying? Lets start from the beginning:
1.Download the emulaot of choice (NES)
2.Unzip the rar, and u get a nes and nes% folder
3.Connect ur psp to ur comp, open the psp folder then the game folder
4.drag and drop the nes and nes% folder into the game folder
5.put all roms in the nes folder
6.ur good to go
U should always have a UMD in the psp, i have never had a problem this way. To eliminate corrupt data icons, dl Seipsptool and that will rename the folders for u, eliminating the corrpt icon. U dont need to edit anything, just drag and drop the folders exactly how they are into the game folder.
Quote: I have the apps in the NES folder
what apps in the NES folder? Dont create a folder urself, use the ones in the .rar
Keep me updated:)

All right to step 4. Now at step 5 I went to the Homebrew downloads at psp-hacks.com website and picked a few games that had large download numbers so that any problems would have been fixed eg Mario Bros, Pacman and SmashG. So I now have 3 new folders in NES . When I select NES emulator from the memory stick, it loads ok. I can see and select the various files in the game folder but my screen stays blank. One game , Jackal.NES even shuts my PSP off. But I will dl seispsptool to see if it makes any difference . thanks for the help so far. It is always a disappointment when you the reach the ur good to go point and nothing happens !!!

It's really not that complicated if you were to search.

I'm a big fan of psp-hacks, and know with 100% confidence they dont offer anyt roms. Their are 0 downloads at psp-hacks that should be put in any emu folder. Games such as SmashG should not be placed in any Emu folder. Are u still using Kxploit to run ur eum's? It is not necessary, as you can just drag and drop the folders u find for the 1.5 into the games folder.
BTW, have u tried the roms u are putting on ur psp on ur comp(original mario, zelda)? If they dont boot with a reputable emu on ur comp, rest assured they wont boot on ur psp.
PS - SEIpsptool wont make any difference, it will only eliminate those ugly corrupt files from ur psp browser.

what is a rom ? Should I be looking for a .NES file like the Jackal game from freeroms.com ? No I haven't tried running them on my PC but I can give them a go. As you will see I am a bit out of my depth here . I thought once I got to v1.5 and loaded NesterJ with Kxploit that Homebrew games were easy . I guess I am close to the penny dropping but not quite there yet.

roms are games that were orignally released on a console, such as NES or Genesis. The homebrew u find on psp-hacks will not boot if u put them in a emu folder such as Nester because they are not ports from an original rom. Once u find a rom, (google), just put it in the folder without a % and have fun:)

So is the benefit of having a v1.5 PSP to run ROMS or getting these Homebrew games to work ??

The benefit for most psp 1.5 owners is that they can run iso's off their mem stick (read: illegaly owned psp games) as well as homebrew such as NES and SNES. New psp fw such as 2.6 cant tun iso's off their mem sitcks, that is why 1.5 is so popular and highly demanded.

Does this mean if I own a PC game on an ISO , I can put it on the mem stick and it will play or does it have to be a Sony or Nintendo game ?
And I guess it goes without saying that most of the ROM sites are offering illegal copies

You can only play ISOs of commercial PSP games(UMDs) on your PSP.

So I buy a game on a UMD then I make an ISO image on my pc which I then copy on to the mem stick. Is that right ? How big is a UMD ISO and how much space do you need on a Mem stick ? I know it probably depends on the game but roughly .

Dont u have the sample UMD that came with ur psp, cause that works. I myself have a 2 gig mem stick ($60-$100) and have more than enough room for anything i ever need. On average, an iso is around 800 MB, almost a gig, but there are programs such as Dax Iso that can shrink a gig iso to around 300-400 MBs. The mem stick that came with ur psp is only 32 MBs, far too small to store an iso. At best, that stick can hold 20-25 small SNES roms.

You can also download an ISO off of Bittorrent sites. Most ISOs, after you reduce their size and rip out unneeded stuff come out to somewhere between 500-800 MBs.

I have two PSP's with 1 gig duos each and 2 kids to keep happy. Sounds like I get 2 for the price of one when I buy a UMD game . I just have to make sure the new games run on a 1.5 but I have a download that claims to do that. My sample UMD just plays a video of different games , no interaction or demos . Haven't actually played anything yet .

cmon thirst, u know better than that. I dont have to tell u to read the forum rules, do i??
There are only a few games that arnt running on 1.5, and theses games require thr most ecent fw updated to run (brath of fire 3...) The UMD u speak of with no interactable content is enought to run homebrew, and 1 gig mem sticks provide enough storage gor a slew of SNES, NES or Genesis games. To run iso's u need a few programs, because not all iso;s are supported by each loader. U can always PM me if u have any questions how to boot games on ur 1.5s for ur kids:)
