I'm fairly new at the burning game and I want to put a Windows media player movie onto a DVD. I understand that I'll need a program to convert the files first. Any free and fairly small programs that will help me do this.

Thanks in advance!

The following are widely used AVI/DivX to DVD converters:

VSO's ConvertXtoDVD: http://www.vso-software.fr/products/convert_x_to_dvd/
DVD Copy 4 Platinum: http://www.intervideo.com/jsp/InterVideoDVDCopy_Profile.jsp
TMPGEnc Express 3: http://tmpgenc.pegasys-inc.com/en/product/te3xp.html
DVD Santa: http://www.dvdsanta.com/
The Film Machine: http://members.home.nl/thefilmmachine/
NeroVision: http://ww2.nero.com/enu/index.html

All are free or have fully functional free trials except ConvertXtoDVD which watermarks its output in the trial version.

If by chance you already have the Nero suite of programs, you can use NeroVision Express to do the conversion.

Many around here use ConvertX.

There's a guide online here although all the programs are fairly simple to use.
