I've read that PSP comes in two different firmwares. And to play ISO on a memory stick, I must get the 1.5 firmware. And I've read that new games can only be played on the 2.0 and above firmware. So does this mean that if i get a 1.5 one, I can only play old games, and not new ones, like GT4 or Tekken 5 : Dark Resurrection? Unless I upgrade?

Another question, if an ISO is made from a new game, say GT4, can I play that ISO off a 1.5 firmware from a memory stick?

Looking forward to your answers

Did you look at the faq on this page? It pretty much answers all your questions.

There are more than 2 firmware versions:

1.0
1.5

Above can play isos

1.51
1.52

Above must be upgraded to 2.0 then downgraded to 1 to play isos

2.0
2.0 can be downgraded to 1.5 to play isos

All of below CANNOT play isos. They cannot be downgraded there is ABSOLUTLY NO WAY of playing isos on these versions right now.

2.01
2.5
2.6
2.7
2.71

All versions can play homebrew

Now you want to play the latest games? Then youll probably have to upgrade soon to 2.5/2.6 as they require that version to play. But some 2.5/2.6 games can be played on a 1.5 with runumd or similar.

It probably best to buy 2.0 or 1.5. You can keep switching between them to play certain games if needed. But then the new games that come out will require a higher firmwre version. But the modchip will be able to solve this dilemma :)

Isn't it risky if my psp gets bricked? due to constant downgrading?
Btw, What's a modchip?
So I get a 1.5 then buy a modchip?? would that be good?

People have up/downgraded at least 40 times and is as good as day 1.
APPARENTLY there is a 1000 limit before it bricks, apparently.. Ill let you decide that for yourself

The modchip is a chip that goes inside the PSP and allows it to have custom firmware, run isos on v2.71 etc. Its not out yet but will change PSP history forever. Its basically good for those who dont have a 1.5 eg. someone with 2.5 would use the modchip to run isos.

Check www.pspupdates.com everyday as the latest news is always posted there.

Thx for the info mate. You've been very helpful ;)

I'll wait for the chip, and if it works, buy any firmware version. I'm not up for the upgrade downgrade thingy, too risky for a poor fella like me =D

Honestly, if you do what the guide says youll be fine, just prepare before hand and it'll be a breeze.
And as for the modchip, id wait a little while and look for some feedback from people whove tried it to see how reliable it is.

okay.

Will new games be made into isos? Can a 1.5 Firmware PSP play 2.0 Firmware games in iso form from a memory stick?

Yeah, all whats happened is its been ripped from the umd. But games that come out in teh next few months will make you update to 2.6+ and this hasnt been cracked yet and i dont think they can be played on 1.5
