i've been using DVD Shrink 3.2.0.15 and Nero.
I was not having any problems till yesterday.
DVD shrink tells me that encoding was done, but the dvd burning was unsuccessful. I ue DVD-R media. I attempted to use a DVD+R disc and it burned sucessfully, but the dvd drive has trouble reading it. When it played the dvd, there were a lot of artifacts.

I recieved the following message:

cynflux,
Welcome to the forum. Below are the problems you are having.

1. Update Nero to the version below and go no higher as the higher version is buggy
nero version 6.6.0.18 updates:

Package 1
http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/Nero-6.6.0.18_no_yt.exe

Package 2
http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/software/Nero6/NVE-3.1.0.21_no_yt.exe

2.You need to update your firmware as you are a few versions behind and this might help the burner recog. the different brand of blank media. You can go to the site below and update to version BSOY:

http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?category=4&manufactor=17

3. === Scsi-Device-Map ===
DiskPeripheral : HITACHI_DK23EA-30 atapi Port 0 ID 0 DMA: On
CdRomPeripheral : HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4241N atapi Port 1 ID 0 DMA: Off

The burners should be in DMA Mode. Go to device manager and locate the Secondary IDE and then right click it and uninstall that burner and then let Windows re-boot and re-install it automatically

You also might need to get a Free Registry Cleaner( you can google for one) and clean the registry of any conflicts and Windows can go into PIO Mode if there are too many registry conflicts.

4. 1:34:42 AM #24 SCSI -1135 File Cdrdrv.cpp, Line 1361
SCSI Exec, HA 2, TA 0, LUN 0, buffer 0x01C56000
Status: 0x04 (0x01, SCSI_ERR)
HA-Status 0x00 (0x00, OK)
TA-Status 0x02 (0x01, SCSI_TASTATUS_CHKCOND)
Sense Key: 0x03 (KEY_MEDIUM_ERROR)

This is the burner not recog the blank media you are using and this is why I suggested the firmware update

5. :34:42 AM #25 SCSI -1023 File Cdrdrv.cpp, Line 1361
SCSI Exec, HA 2, TA 0, LUN 0, buffer 0x022F0000
Status: 0x04 (0x01, SCSI_ERR)
HA-Status 0x00 (0x00, OK)
TA-Status 0x02 (0x01, SCSI_TASTATUS_CHKCOND)
Sense Key: 0x05 (KEY_ILLEGAL_REQUEST)

Burner is not recog the computer command

Lets see if the above helps . If not post back w/ a new log so we can see the errors

cynflux,
It is your blank media. Try Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden, Maxell, Sony(made in Japan)to get the better media. It just does not like th Prodisc's you are using.

Also you might change the Target size to Custom-4350 so you do not burn to close to the outer rim.

Everything else looks OK in the log except for the media not being liked. I think if you get some of the better blank media you will be good to go. If you are in the U.S. then you can look at BestBuy and they sell the 16X Verbatims for $ 19.99 for 50. They are usually advertised in the Sunday paper at least 1 time a month

unfortunately, i bought a 100 pk. spindle of the Prodisc's
a while back. now i am stuck with about 50 Prodisc dvd-r's that won't work in dvd burner. any idea what i can do with them?
thank you in advance.

cynflux,
The reason it is having a problem probably playing in the DVD Player is the compatibility of the blank media to the DVD Player. You can try burning them at a slower speed to see if that helps. You can still use them for data storage ( spreadsheets, Pictures)or you can use them as Drink coasters. LOL. I think the slower speed might work as you might have multiple manuf. that did the blank media

I burned a few DVD's with Sony DVD-R's. The first DVD played immediately as soon it was read in the dvd player. The second required me to open and close repeatedly the dvd tray. Eventually, it works after about 10 mins. The dvd player is Panasonic and it was purchased several years ago. The content on the DVD's were different. Does this have an effect on the likelihood that it will be played? Which is the best recommended dvd player? There is a Memorex DVD player on sale and i was thinking about purchasing it. My father has the exact model I am interested and the dvd's i have burned seemed to work on it.

cynflux,
I think the Panasonic player you have just does not some of those Sony disk's. If the Memorex plays the burned DVD's then go ahead and get it. You might try Verbatim Blank Media as they might play in the Panasonic. See if you can borrow a few from a friend and try them. It could also be that the older players do not like the MID codes on the newer blank media and thusly have problems playing them. If the Memorex Player plays (+)DVD's and if your burner can booktype (+)DVD's to DVD-Rom then I would use (+) blank media as they would be more compatible w/ the players

I've received a similar error from my PC when I've tried to back up some DVDs. This has been going on for 2 months. I tried downgrading my Nero and I have the latest DVD Fab & DVD Shrink. I have a NEC DVD RW ND-3520A.

phoenixmg,
If you are putting the disk into the player and the DVD Player does not recog the burned copy it probably is a Blank media compatibility problem w/ the DVD Player. If you are not using Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden blank DVD media then I suggest you try that blank media . If it is another problem then post the Nero log so we can read it

It'll work fine until it's time to transfer the movie to the blank media. I've been using Sony, Memorex, & Verbatim blank DVD +R & DVD -R discs with no success. Would I need a firmware update? If so, where can I get one? I've tried backing up the following: Munich, Tamara, Samurai Jack Season 3 set, X Men Evolution, & Grizzly Man. Here's the error log/message that I keep getting:

phoenixmg,
Here are the errors below:

1. NEC DVD_RW ND-3520A> Version: 1.04
Firmware needs updating to version 3.05. You can get it below

http://www.de.nec.de/softwareoverview2.php/id/557

2. DiskPeripheral : IC35L060AVV207-0 atapi Port 0 ID 0 DMA: On
CdRomPeripheral : LITEON DVD-ROM LTD163 atapi Port 1 ID 0 DMA: On
CdRomPeripheral : _NEC DVD_RW ND-3520A atapi Port 1 ID 1 DMA: Off

The NEC drive has DMA turned off. Uninstall the secondary IDE Channel in Device manager and the re-boot to let Windows reinstall it properly. I would suggest that you D/L a free Registry Cleaner and clean out the registry as conflicts can cause the OS to degrade the DMA down to PIO status

3. Last possible write address on media: 2298495 (510:46.45, 4489MB)
Last address to be written: 2286111 (508:01.36, 4465MB)

You need to set the target size to custom-4350 so you do not burn too close to the outer rim

4. Disc Manufacturer: RITEKF - 1

It see the Ritek disk but it does not like them as it is seeing it as an illegal disk

5. Status: 0x04 (0x01, SCSI_ERR)
HA-Status 0x00 (0x00, OK)
TA-Status 0x02 (0x01, SCSI_TASTATUS_CHKCOND)
Sense Key: 0x05 (KEY_ILLEGAL_REQUEST)

Conflicts the the program and the computer system as the computer is not responding. Might be helped by the registry cleaner, Firmware update and better blank media. You were using the Verbatim but the burner needs to have the MID Code for the Verbatim's and hopefully that update will help.

hello,
thank you for your help.
i notice that after the firmware update, that DVD Shrink will only burn at 4X. is this normal?
I was also wondering how to remove the skips and blocky artifacts that appear when i play a burned dvd.
would changing the target size fix this problem?
i've cleaned the dvd laser lens, but the problem still seems to happen.
Before i burn a dvd, i always defrag my hard drive.

<< You need to set the target size to custom-4350 so you do not burn too close to the outer rim. >>

i would recommend changing this setting before DVD Shrink scans the dvd and before you do the Deep Analysis.

cynflux,
You set your speed in Shrink by going to Backup> Burn settings and the speed for the blank media should be there.

The artifacts are many caused by the blank media, and burning too fast. Have you tried the Verbatims yet?

Once you set the custom size of the target disk that size should stay the same disk after disk

phoenixmg,
The NEC should be the Master on the Secondary IDE Channel and the Lite-on should be the slave on the Secondary IDE Channel. These are set w/ the jumpers on the back of the Burner and DVD-Rom. The NEC should be on the longest part of the IDE Cable and the slave should be on the connection in the middle.

The HD(boot drive) should be set up on the Primary IDE Channel as master.

If you are not sure how to do it get a knowledgeable friend to do it for you.
