What brand, type (+R -R), and speed of media are you using for copies?
What is the brand and model of your DVD burner?
At what speed are you burning backup copies?
What programs are you using?
Do the backup copies playback correctly when using the burner drive on your PC?
Do the backup copies playback OK on other people's players?

Sometimes using good quality media with up to date burner firmware and a reasonable burn speed makes all the difference.

MAYBE JUST MAYBE YOUR DVD PLAYER DOES NOT WANT TO PLAY THE BURNT COPYS. IT MIGHT HAVE A CODE IN IT THAT WILL ENABLE YOU TO PLAY THEM.

I doubt there is anything you can do. What I don't understand is why it won't play any burned DVDs. I've had a DVD player of one sort or another for 7 years. All have played burned disks as long as they were burned on decent media. According to the specs for this player, it is supposed to play everything. Maybe whoever is burning the DVDs is doing so to poor quality media at too fast a speed. Try to find out what brand of media they are using (it may be printed on the DVDs) and at what speed they were burned. Is there another player in the house that can read/playback the same disks? If so, maybe the Sony player isn't working correctly and can be returned.

I have a Sony Dream System with 5 disc player that also dislikes backup copies. Heck, it even dislikes some originals. I've used all kinds of media including TYs, etc - but the unit will play to some extent - then starts skipping. The same discs work perfect in other brand players. I think its the Sony itself. I finally replaced it because it was very irritating to start watching a movie and then the player starts screwing up. I tried cleaning the unit, disks, etc. but nothing helped.
