Hi: "DVD Shrink" encountered problems backing up "Freedomland". I then tried "DVDFAB". It could not decrypt a file and stopped? I then tried "DVD Decrypter", I got thru the decryption but it skipped four (4) files? The movies disc looks like new - no sign of usage. Could this be a new way of encodement? Ronnies

Well, I have AnyDVD so the movie was not a problem for me. The program is well worth the money and it is updated often. You can download a 20-day free trial at slysoft.com.

Step 2 (if you don't want to download AnyDVD or have already used the free trial)
Make sure that DVDFab has the latest update. If it still cannot decrypt the movie then get a free copy of VobBlanker. You can find it here: http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_tools/voblan... Open the file in VobBlanker and blank out problem cells. If you are new to VobBlanker read some help information.

For example before you process the file you want to create 2 folders. The first folder is the name of the movie and the second is VIDEO_TS. So your location may look similar to d:\movie_title\VIDEO_TS. Doing this allows both Shrink and Recode 2 to open the file.

Alkohol wrote a guide to using VobBlanker. You may view that here: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/334154

Thanks to Alkohol and his experience you should have no problem with this movie.

Good luck!

Here is the process I went through:

1.) I used PGCedit with the PSL2plugin and used the wizard to go ahead and fire up DVDdecrypter. You don't have to use the wizard but I just felt like it this time. Some settings I made in DVDDecrypter: Turned on logging and changed my CSS settings to "Brute Force -> I/O Key Exchange"

2.) When errors occured while ripping I just hit abort and let it keep going. After everything was done I let PGCEdit generate a PSL file. I then deleted my previous rip and started PGCEdit again and ran the PSL2 plugin wizard.

3.)Before I started the rip I loaded the PSL file I generated earlier. Everything then ripped fine. I let the wizard keep processing everything. I had an error with an IFO file.

4.) I opened up this IFO in IFOEdit and did a Mock Strip then copied the fixed files into my rip directory making sure to overwrite the old files.

5.) Opened up PGCEdit again and ran the PSL2 plugin wizard and chose the option of cleaning up the rip. It processed everything and cleaned up some dummy files.

6.) After that I loaded up DVDShrink and prceeded to burn.

Everything seems to be fine with the burn. It plays correctly. This was the same process I used on When A Stranger Calls.

CableDJ 5.9.6.3 is the latest download available for AnyDVD.

f_magee made a good point. I think the process takes a little longer doing it that way, but it is a free way to do it.

Happy Burnin'!!

SYXGUNS is correct. The process I went through is a little more time cosuming. You could technically do the rip with the PSL you generated over your previous rip and just let it replace the files you had to abort on. This may save a little more time. There are many ways of getting around this new encryption you basically have to choose which one you are most comfortable with and which progs you like using. For me it is PGCEdit. I like the control it gives you over the DVD itself. I'm always up for trying out new methods though.

The important part is to have fun doing it.

dvdfab had no problem with this movie. rip it with dvdfab, run thru vobBlanker and use shrink. if you want to go the free route, this is the most simple,in my opinion.

@ f_magee

Since you are very familiar with PgcEdit would you mind telling me how to change where my directory will be created when I open a DVD.

Right now I get the message: "can't create directory "F:/VIDEO_TS_backup": permission denied

I don't want my backup to go to drive F: because that is my DVD drive. I want my backup directory to go to drive D: or G:

Maybe I am doing something wrong but I can't seem to get it to change. I have never used it before. Should I shrink first? I am not sure and was hoping you had the answer.

Thanks a bundle in advance.

@ syxguns

By default PGCEdit tries to create a PgcEdit_Backup folder in the DVD folder you are opening. This is fine when you are opening a File Mode rip or something like that. This is just a backup of some of your original files in case you screw something up. This option is controllable under Options --> Input/Output --> Create Backup When DVD is Opened for the First Time. If you uncheck that you won't see that message again. For you not having this backup won't really be a problem that is unless you are using a DVD-/+RW. If you screw up the file you can copy back to your working dir. You may however find it easier to rip this dvd in file mode to a dir on your HDD and then open it in pgcedit.
Hope this helps you out.

---EDIT-----
I should also note that when I mentioned the DVD-/+RW I meant in case you were going to over write your original movie. Since you would lose the previously working versions of those files.

Wow - that is a bundle of info to process. I see in the tutorial by "Alkohol", the movies is first ripped by "DVDFAB". The problem I have begins at the START of being ripped by "DVDFAB". The movie "Freedomland" was halted in the decoding process in "DVDFAB" about four files into the decoding process. I can't even get to the "Voblanker" decoder? Is something wrong with the movie disc? It looks brand new... Ronnies

RONNIES, you are running into the newer Sony encryption. Do you have AnyDVD running in the background before you start up DVDFab?

Yes, it is true that DVD Decrypter + PgcEdit + PSL Plugins can rip/backup any movies (even new released), but it's a bit time consuming. The fastest and most easiest is to go with DVDFAB Decrypter + VobBlanker, then the rest is history. **NOTE: DVDFAB Decrypter only take 12 minutes to rip and 5 minutes to process the VIDEO_TS.IFO file through VobBlanker.

Here http://www.k-probe.com/backup-newly-release-movie-DVD-DVDFAB-Decr... is my revised "DVDFAB Decrypter + VobBlanker (FREE tools)" and Nero Recode 2 guide. You can substitute Nero Recode with DVD Shrink if you want to. DVDFAB Decrypter and VobBlanker has "never" let me down.

Good luck and happy burning.

Good. That is why I was asking. DVDFab and AnyDVD can cause problems with each other. Have you had any luck or are you still encountering probs?

Hi, I had a problem using DVDFAB and VOBBLANKER, I didn't have enough space on my hard drive. When I tried using DVDANY and DVD Shrink, it wouldn't work. I kept getting an error. I have used AnyDVD and DVD Shrink on other movies, but it won't work on When a stranger calls.

@ sue10436,
