I have a quick question.
I have a modded slim ps2 and I am trying to boot games odd an external USB HDD. I've tried USB Extreme and it doiesn't recognize any HDD connected to the PS2 but that's another story.

My question is: I understand that Swap Magic is a pressed disc and since I have a mod chip already, is it possible to boot a burned copy of swap magic?

Oh 1 more thing, I understand it's relatively pointless to boot swap magic on a modded ps2 but I'm trying to load programs (elf files mainly). SO if there's another way to do so, could you pleease let me know.

Thank you

i think you can.. and why would you need a swap magic if you have a modded ps2? unless you have an ancient modded ps2 like mine.. i dont know what chip is in it,i had to hold eject button for 3-4 secs for the tray to come out and swap the discs. that way i wouldnt need to use the slidecard that came with my swap magic. oh yeah i didnt know you can copy swap magic.. cos i tried it before and got an error reading the disc on my PC

Ok this is for all of you people with the problem of Swap Magic freezing just before the load program screen when using a USB device.
This happens to me aswell, heres a easy solution which works for me 100% of the time:

1. Turn off your PS2 from the back switch.

2. Insert your USB device.

3. Power on your PS2 and insert Swap Magic disc.

4. It should load the disc but it will freeze. The USB light should now be flashing if it has one. (LEAVE THE USB IN THERE!) This means it has been detected.

5. Now simply reset your PS2, (LEAVE YOUR USB & SWAP MAGIC DISC IN THERE), now Swap Magic should load again and the USB device should also be detected. (IF THERES A LIGHT ON THE USB DEVICE IT WILL BE FLASHING)

The USB device gets detected the first time you boot Swap Magic and then stays detected unless you turn of your PS2, so the second time, when you reset your PS2, it doesnt have to detect the USB because its already been detected :D

Also my USB device is formatted with the FAT32 file system.

Hope this helps :D

hatebreed,

Do you have AR2 or ARMAX? Also, have you tried booting any other .elf files apart from the HDLoader ones?

I can borrow my friend's Swap Magic 3.3 and test it out if you'd like. I know the Plus 3.6 and Coder 3.8 versions support it, and yes, my bad, they can launch programs from a memory card.

XcAbAr,

Quote:

Yes, it is indeed possible, at least the ones downloaded from the Net, cuz I got disc read errors like hatebreed said when trying to back up my original Swap Magic.

Quote:

Yes, you can, at least the compatible ones (USB devices, that is). uLaunchELF itself is pretty self-explanatory once you see it/get it to load.

simon_des,

I assume so since it stated that it can "load your own programs from USB Mass Storage Devices". But exactly which kind of USB Mass Storage Devices, I don't know.

i think theres a program call USBExtreme and thats what you use for usb hdds. But i wouldnt recommend it because the usb ports on ps2 are only 1.1 which is slower than usb 2.0. I havent experienced it yet but many people say that usb hdd games lags so bad. So i would stick to internal/IDE hdds

Thanks, I have the slim ps2 though, so internal really isn't an option, or is it possible?

Because I have an ARMax and that's the version that recognizes my USB flashdrive.

Not yet. I'm meeting my friend this weekend, so...soon.

Didn't Sony upgrade the USB ports on a SlimPS2 to 2.0?

hatebreed,

Ok, I have tested out Swap Magic 3.3, and no, it can't boot programs from a USB source. However, there were 2 ways I could boot HDLoader from a USB flashdrive:

1. uLaunchElf
2. Swap Magic Coder 3.8

Yeah, no probs hatebreed. My friend wanted to know as well so...now he knows too, lol. This was what I did:

At the root of the USB flashdrive, I created a folder called SWAPMAGIC, and inside it, I put the HDAdvance.elf file, which I renamed to SWAPMAGIC.ELF. Now, this is supposed to load as soon as Swap Magic boots up. With Swap Magic Coder 3.8, HDAdvance loaded right away. But with Swap Magic 3.3, nothing happened. I don't have Swap Magic 3.6 Plus but if it says it can load programs from a USB flashdrive (like Coder 3.8), then it should work.

I haven't tried loading programs off a memory card with Swap Magic, but from what I've heard, you have to create a cd image with certain files and the programs you want to run. You then use Swap Magic to load this cd and it will install the files onto the memory card.

I've tried two USB sticks now with Swapmagic 3.6, and with both of them, it goes to boot the ELF and instead of going to LaunchELF or whatever the file is, it takes me straight to the built-in PS2 Browser... o.O Any ideas?

Maybe the .elf file you got is not compatible or is corrupted? I had that happen to me before. Try downloading another file and remember to rename it so that SwapMagic can recognize it.

Never mind, got it working. Strangely, the SWAPMAGIC.ELF did not work whatever I tried, but naming it SMBOOT01.ELF and booting it by pressing UP+L1 did the trick. And once I have LaunchELF running, getting everything else to work is a piece of cake ^^

ive been trying to boot games from a USB drive and i was wondering what can i do to make it WORK(?!?). I've followed various methods and I'm starting to wonder if you have to make more of the file than just changing the name to SWAPMAGIC.ELF or SMBOOT01.ELF. Am i supposed to change more than the name, or what?

Here is the method to use for Swap Magic.
AUTO-Loading your own programs from USB Mass Storage Devices:

- rename the ELF program you want to launch to SWAPMAGIC.ELF
- create a folder named SWAPMAGIC in the root directory of your USB mass storage device and then put the SWAPMAGIC.ELF file in that folder
- plug in the USB mass storage device into your PS2
- power on your PS2 with your Swap Magic disc
- if the program is found in "./SWAPMAGIC/" it will be launched automatically

MANUAL-Loading your own programs from USB Mass Storage Devices:

- you can have a maximum of 4 files in the "./SWAPMAGIC/" folder at the same time. You will need to rename these ELF program files to the following respectively:
- SMBOOT0.ELF
- SMBOOT1.ELF
- SMBOOT2.ELF
- SMBOOT3.ELF

- plug in the USB Mass Storage Device to the USB port of your PS2
- power on your PS2 with your Swap Magic disc
- after booting up your PS2 with the Swap Magic disc, you will see a "BOOT DISC" window
- select "SMBOOT" and you will see another window "LAUNCH SMBOOT"
- select the program file and press "X" to run the program.

The above instructions are from the Swap Magic 3 User Manual.
