can any one help my ps2 keeps asking for a format disc what does this mean

what is the EXACT message you get?
That means nothing to me. If it is asking for a playstation formated disc it is saying that it doesn't recognize what you put in as a PS2 disc.

More info:
What are you trying to play?
Is it an original game or a back up?
If a back up what do you use to boot it?
If a back up what brand and speed DVD did you use (Philips 8X DVD-R)
If a back up what did you burn it with?

If an origianl then your laser may need to be cleaned or adjusted.
