I have a PS2 which I believe is a version 7. Its product number is SCPH-39001. I'm getting a DVD burner soon, and I will need to buy DVD media for backing up my PS2 games. My question is, does the V7 (or whatever it is if it's not version 7) PS2 support both +/- and which one will work better for backing up PS2 games?

Hello, you will probably read a lot about booktyping if you look into this. You want to get a DVD burner that can change the booktype of the DVD. LiteOn and BenQ both support this feature. You have to buy DVD+R's but the burner makes it so the PS2 (or DVD player) will see a DVD-ROM. This makes them much more compatible. It's always worked for me.

I read about how to change the booktype on DVD Decrypter, which I have. My question is, will both DVD+R and DVD-R be supported in my V7 PS2?

I also always booktype now but I still have a lot of my backups on Fuji TYG02 DVD-R and they work fine with my PS2. They are DVD-Video though. I'm not sure if it makes a difference if you need to backup PS2 games... I'm also not sure how compatible DVD+R is with the PS2. What I'll do is I'll burn a DVD+R without booktyping and I'll get back to you on that.

I know that either way, consoles like the PS2 are picky about burned media. Getting good quality blank DVD's will not only help compatibility but they will also help the longevity of the DVD drive in the PS2.

Always use good quality blank media. Verbatim is always a good call. Don't be seduced by those 50-spindles you find in the $2.99 bin at your local car wash! :)

In general, DVD-R's are more compatible, but like I said DVD-ROM booktyped are even more compatible. Nick600 is right about getting good quality media, I would stay to TY's, Sony's, etc. Stay away from Memorex and other low brands. Good luck.
